Should we use low value names for our own sites?

I've got a hosting plan that allows me to have 1,000 add-on domains, and I use what I consider to be a low value name as a "coat hanger". By coat hanger I mean the master domain for the hosting plan. The name I use is Kat1.com, and I don't see that this has much value, and is unlikely to sell. This is useful for me, as it is extremely disruptive to change these master domains. I have some other plans based on business names.

Do you think this is a wasted resource, and I should be trying to earn some revenue with the name? Or should one use more valuable names as an investment?

Please note - I am not asking for a review of Kat1.com, or a valuation. I am more interested in the concept of using such low value names for long term purposes.

As you properly stated, it can be extremely disruptive to change certain domains, so it's wise to have some for utility purposes that you're very unlikely to ever sell.

If someone is just starting out, I would suggest using their FirstnameLastname(.)com (or Lastname(.)com is even better, if it's available). If one needs more than just one utility domain, the .net, .org, or a ccTLD can also be used (and also adds to your personal brand protection/investment!).
