Having relatives and friends scattered all over the globe, I am getting an overload of input (some on the record and some off the record).

My intention for this thread is for community members from around the world to post first hand stories and/or links to information sources that, for the most part, should be reliable.

In my community, just outside a major southeastern city, 'assets' have been placed. Only because I have friends in both high and low places have I heard about some of this. At this point it is only some basic medical supplies that should be equally distributed anyway in preparation for a natural emergency (hurricane/wildfire/etc.).

I will start with posting a link to a site with current data that seems to come from an aggregate of sources and hope others will do the same as they come across similar sites/pages.

Because of the 'typhoid Mary' spread-ability of this disease, I feel we may be in for a really large spread globally which will impact the global economy and through extension, retail domain prices.

One thing is for sure...things will get worse before they get better.

Pfizer video sparks hope COVID-19 vaccine could be ready by December
A US-based company has released promising video revealing they’ve produced “several hundred thousand doses” of a vaccine for COVID-19.
Pfizer, a Manhattan-based company, told the Mail on Sunday the company has already produced “several hundred thousand doses” of its vaccine and plans to have 100 million doses ready by the end of the year.

This 14-year-old girl won a $25K prize for a discovery that could lead to a cure for Covid-19

This is really sophisticated work for a 14-year-old -- if she doesn't solve Covid, she may well solve something else down the line.

Sinopharm says may be able to make over one billion coronavirus vaccine doses in 2021

China National Pharmaceutical Group (Sinopharm), one of several Chinese firms developing coronavirus vaccines, said it may have the capacity to produce more than 1 billion doses in 2021, Chairman Liu Jingzhen said on Tuesday.

Good achievement. Give it most vulnerable people, and rest will develop herd immunity. Total of 1.4 billion Chinese.

Mouthwashes, oral rinses may inactivate human coronaviruses

Certain oral antiseptics and mouthwashes may have the ability to inactivate human coronaviruses, according to a Penn State College of Medicine research study. The results indicate that some of these products might be useful for reducing the viral load, or amount of virus, in the mouth after infection and may help to reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

I tested a Harvard-designed nasal spray to help stop the spread of COVID-19

But having talked to the Harvard scientist David Edwards who created this system, dubbed the FEND, I overcome my personal embarrassment. Because if it works as intended, this invention is groundbreaking. Edwards claims that if you take just two puffs with his device, you reduce your chance of exhaling COVID-19-filled droplets by 99% for six hours—which he validated in a small, 10-person study. In theory, it should make your own nose and throat more resistant to contracting COVID-19, too, by turning your throat into a sticky fly trap for the virus to keep it out of your lungs.

I added Indonesia to the list a while ago...a niece and her family lived there for about 4 years recently. I've been concerned the population density she told me existed in some metro areas might lead to large outbreaks.

Jakarta is under local lockdown (PSBB). All activities are limited such as restaurants can only operate at a maximum of 50% of capacity, as well as public transportation.

If your family here follows the government's health protocols, they'll be safe

I was wondering how come bats don't die from corona viruses if they are carriers?

It seems that the virus finds a niche and their immune systems can adjust, "Instead of killing bat cells as the virus does with human cells, the MERS coronavirus enters a long-term relationship with the host, maintained by the bat's unique 'super' immune system, SARS-CoV-2 is thought to operate in the same way."

https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/05/200506133614.htm

"If we could mimic the immune response of bats to viruses, that allows them to tolerate them, then you could look to nature to find a cure. It's already evolved, we don't need to reinvent the wheel. We now have the tools to be able to understand the steps we need to take; we need to develop the drugs to do it."

https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-53494566

It's like developing immunity to cope with or rolling with the punch vs killing the virus in humans. As a new virus is introduced, our immune systems will evolve. Forgive me if this has already been posted, but IMO, it's worth revisiting.

This makes sense to me:

'The green reed which bends in the wind is stronger than the mighty oak which breaks in a storm.' Confucius

'The oak fought the wind and was broken, the willow bent when it must and survived.' Robert Jordan

Having studied Karate and Kung Fu (even boxing) each system has merit, but I like the soft approach, better to bend than break, better yet if one can avoid being hit in the first place! Our approach in Western medicine can learn from these philosophies.

Long Covid: Who is more likely to get it?

The research at King's College London also showed being female, excess weight and asthma raised the risk.

Having more than five different symptoms in the first week was one of the key risk factors," Dr Claire Steves, from Kings College London, told BBC News.

Covid-19 is more than just a cough - and the virus that causes it can affect organs throughout the body.

Somebody who had a cough, fatigue, headache and diarrhoea, and lost their sense of smell - which are all potential symptoms - would be at higher risk than somebody who had a cough alone.

The risk also rises with age - particularly over 50 - as did being female.

Dr Steves said: "We've seen from the early data coming out that men were at much more risk of very severe disease and sadly of dying from Covid, it appears that women are more at risk of long Covid."

How obesity could create problems for a COVID vaccine

Obesity correlates with a dulled immune response to COVID-19. And vaccines for a handful of other conditions often don’t work as well in obese people, suggesting that a shot for COVID-19 might not provide as much protection as researchers would like. “We worry about that,” says Donna Ryan, who has studied obesity at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Researchers are still unsure whether or not obesity will affect vaccine efficacy. And there might be ways to counteract problems if they arise. But scientists are also concerned that clinical trials might not be well designed to capture such issues promptly. “It‘s something the experts need to really look at,” says Ryan.

Reducing chances of COVID-19 infection by a cough cloud in a closed space

The volume of the cough-cloud without a mask is about 7 and 23 times larger than in the presence of a surgical mask and an N95 mask, respectively. We also find that the cough-cloud is present for 5 s–8 s, after which the cloud starts dissipating, irrespective of the presence or absence of a mask. Our analysis suggests that the cough-cloud finally attains the room temperature, while remaining slightly more moist than the surrounding. These findings are expected to have implications in understanding the spread of coronavirus, which is reportedly airborne.

Deceased AstraZeneca Trial Volunteer Didn’t Receive Vaccine

A participant who died during a trial of AstraZeneca Plc’s Covid-19 vaccine in Brazil hadn’t received the company’s shot, according to a person familiar with the matter.

AstraZeneca, which is developing the vaccine with the University of Oxford, said it can’t comment on individual cases because of confidentiality and clinical trial rules. Oxford has no concerns about the safety of the vaccine trial after an independent and careful review, and Brazil’s regulators have recommended that it continue, university communications head Stephen Rouse said in statement.

So the participant received a placebo. Vaccine trials continue.

Spent an hour today speaking with a regional manager of a nationally recognized grocery chain and a pharmacy manager traveling with him. I hate to say it, but runs on certain items will start soon and many things will become unavailable...again.
