Future of New Domain Names in Voice Recognition and AI.

Since 2014, hundreds of new domain extensions (new domain names, or new gTLDs) were introduced into internet space. Now we can register domain names in extensions like .life, .world, .live, .online, .store, .xyz, or .photo.

New domain names have one very interesting property, which, in my opinion, will be of great relevance once Voice Recognition and AI will dominate how we search the internet.

They can be used seamlessly as an integral part of a sentence. And in many platforms, they are also creating automatic hyperlinks.

At the moment, we still, in most cases, type our search queries in search fields: that can change in the next few years.

To demonstrate the topic, I wrote a small treatise to show you how new gTLDs can be used in plain written English text (it’s a bit funny and clumsy, as I had to use only domains that belong to my own domain portfolio, which is an obvious limitation, of course). One good example is sometimes better than a long theoretical explanation, so here we go:

22 years ago I demo'd Dragon Naturally Speaking, and I'm still not convinced that voice recognition is a replacement for a trusty QWERTY keyboard. I still prefer knowing that what I am typing is what comes out at the other end.

I cant understand why your post is related to AI and voice recognition. You just wrote a post (an article) in which you linked internet domains. How this is the future ? We could write this article 10 years ago with .coms. We could also do it with a voice recognition software.

Please write it with .com names (or any suffixed names for that matter, where suffix is not part of the semantic meaning) and post it here - I am curious how you will do it :)

I think now it is both, but in the very near future, it will be more of a voice, via smartphones. In a little more distant future, we will probably only think of words, via some neural links or so .. which will happen probably still in my lifetime :)

The future of search is voice, video, immersive content and telepathy

Google & Pinterest Lens projects are just the beginning when it comes to visual search.....

Google search by photo's & Style ideas
Augmented reality being incorporated onto Google Maps....

Bing (Microsoft) have also invested heavily in this area

Copied and pasted the above from another thread I replied to a while back

When it comes to new gTLDs I don't see any particular benefit over any other domain extension when it comes to voice or visual recognition or Ai...

Any type of search algorithm looks for the best match for that search query, the domain plays only a very minor role in this and will keep decreasing in importance over time...its all about the content

That is very interesting - thanks for sharing information about those visual search projects, I will have a look to learn more about them!

Visual search will probably not help us, domain investors - but as they say in some holy books, in the beginning, there was a word (not picture or image) - so lets see how it will all develop :)

I'm really sorry but I don't think I'm seeing what you're seeing. Maybe you're a genius and I'm not. (y)

Your article seems to suggest that this is a useful property of new domains that I can say them and generate a badly worded sentence. Maybe it can, but what additional purpose does it serve by doing so that isn't just as it is now.

Although "Go to Johns.barber for hair cutting tips" is nice, "Go to Johnsbarber.com for hair cutting tips" also serves the same purpose to me.

I'm not arguing that in some cases the domains are nicer or seem to make sense when the name and the tld compliment each other, I think most would see the value in that.

I'm still finding that if I still say the "dot" in the middle it makes the sentence not make sense anymore.

Is there a practical application for putting these names into a sentence?

One thing that I will say is that it made a long list of domains from your portfolio more paletable to read. Maybe that's a positive in itself hehe :smug:

Thanks for the thoughtful post!

Well, the article is designed to show some use cases for new gTLDs, but I definitely do not state that I personally know which platforms will be there in the future, how those names will be used, or what marketing trends will be in fashion, etc. No one knows. But I think it does not do any harm to sometimes contemplate the future, while we are investing now at the present moment.

Whether there is a practical application for putting these domain names into sentences, is not so clear at the moment. But some marketing experts can come up with some utilisations as time pass.

At the moment, I found for example that we can comment below youtube videos with new gTLDs. We can write sentences like "Wow, what was a nice / video!" for example. This automatically creates a hyperlink to nice / video website. You can also write something like "Wow, that was a nicevideo / com" but as you can see, this is a little different ( I am using / instead of . not to index actual domain names in this example).

Are links to websites important? Are links created this way under Youtube videos important? Will such activities bring traffic? Can that be part of some viral campaigns? What about Instagram for example? Or Facebook? Can domain names be used as hashtags in some social media? A lot of questions, which I am just learning answers. Once you know the answers, you can invest in relevant names that will be in demand in the future.

I am happy you found a long list of domains from my portfolio more palatable after you read the article. That itself is a valuable achievement for me I guess, lol :)

Thanks for sharing more of your thoughts, it's interesting! I too have noticed that YouTube recognises word.word as a domain now, it seems to do it when the user hasn't intended it to be there but that's by the by I suppose.

The narrative is shifting, more GTLDs are selling these days, The numbers will continue to rise steadily

I sold www.sicily.properties for $1,200 one month ago in the pandemic, normal renewal, 250% ROI annually, hand registered in 2014

^ If www.sicily.properties can sell for $1,200 - what can I sell www.e.credit for

Time will tell

No idea Alessandro how that sale will finish at the end - but it's a very good name, wishing you GL :)

Thank you for your post. This is a very interesting and a very valid vision in my opinion.

What I do wonder is how the growing awareness of the intrusive nature of such technologies might limit or even thwart the adoption of such domain names... Surely something to consider on the flip side of such a seemingly natural progression but governments are not helping the situation.

Thank you @stalinrod13! For your point, I think billions of people are not aware (or are partially aware, but do not care much) of how their data or metadata are used by such technologies - all they care about is to get as much convenience and fun as possible. So I guess they will get it in the future - as they say, food and games :)
