I was recently talking to a startup founder here in Austin who asked me, “next to .COM, what do you think is the best domain extension for an app?” Most people want the .COM that matches their domain but sometimes this doesn’t align with their budget. Let’s be honest, .COM’s are the most expensive domain names out there, for an early-stage startup launching an app, budgets are often $25k or lower.
I have a hard time answering this since I think a number of TLD are good fits for apps, but I think it’s only fair to answer the question if I’m going to ask it. So here are my thoughts – I think .co, .me, and .io are the best alternatives available right now. In the future .APP will be a solid contender and it doesn’t hurt that it’s being run by Google who paid $25M for it...

It's dot com, no doubt about it. You can go with (name)app dot com. Or add i in front of the name for iOS apps.

.com is even on the mobile keyboard as a button...

"Google is behind" stuff is a bad endorsement, imho. They backed .mobi and fooled many into wasting lots of money, then they did abc.xyz with the same impact, now they are running .app, which they will eventually spin-off, as they won't deal with peanuts...

It's not .com and it's bye bye apps anyway.

I dont get the .co hype... it seems to be that even .cc is more popular? i like .io tho does have a techy-vibe to it, whether thats marketing or not is anybodies guess.

I prefer .com extension for any app!

You could start off with any ngltld you wish to. However, you'd eventually need dotcom to get a global exposure. All the best :)

By the way, the accepted/normal practice for apps seem to secure Brand+App.com first and if they take off and can afford to make an offer for brand.com, buy that...

The first preference is .com , but if you cant afford .com then try .co .
.io if it is a tech startup.

I would always go with a .com. I'd change the name of my app, if I had to. Or even play around with the suffix or prefix, as suggested above. keywordapp.com would seem most appropriate if keyword.com is taken.

Many great apps use .io. Kinda a sign of their hipsterism or something like this. Look credible as well.

I must be the only one that thinks .app is a good extension for an APP. Silly me. Yes, we all would like one word noun .com oceanfront domains. There is a very stupid trend of adding ly, fy (and it even sounds weird) as a desperate attempt to add that .com which will sound dated very soon. A noun .app has better fluency because your product name is validated by the extension.

Yes, we all know about .mobi and we all know it was a flop but people act as if one mistake means everything else is also doomed. Everybody uses the word app. Nobody uses mobi. Get over it. It makes a lot more sense to the end user to have an app that ends in .app than other fad extensions like .io or whatever. You have to realize .io came before .app and was the "in" domain for tech companies. A .io website can be an app or whatever, but a .app is assumed to be an app just like a .org site is assumed to be a non profit organization.

The benefits of a .app will be even more evident in the future as progressive web apps come out blurring the line between a website and an app essentially turning your website into a web app thereby making the .app extension relevant. There is longevity in this extension. By the time everybody is done arguing about .mobi all the .app domains will be gone. Then the .app domain sales start coming out and then everybody wished they would have gotten their hands on a .app domain name when they had a chance. That's as good an extension for an APP as I've ever seen.

Couldn't agree with you more.
