Type of Contest: App Logo/Icon Contest

Prize: USD 10 + USD 60 bonus via Paypal

Contest End Date & Time: October 20 at 00:00 GMT

Size Requirements: Vector (scalability is a requirement)

Color Requirements: No particular requirements at this point, though keep it within reasonable limits. Nothing too playful.

General Requirements: This contest is for an app icon for an RSS reader application.

The name will reference a "dovecote" or "carriere-pigeon loft", so a suggested theme could (not required, by any means) incorporate a stylised dovecote or also the typical RSS logo (emphasis on incorporate here, the logo should not be just the Nth version of the RSS logo).

Again, that is just a possible suggestion, no requirement, please let your creativity roam freely. What's important is that it incorporates the meaning of news/RSS in one way or another. That can be via mentioned suggestions or something completely different.

The icon/logo should follow a somewhat modern style and not be too playful. Again, creativity is more than welcome, please just keep in mind the primary use will be as an app icon, so it should definitely be suitable for that and should follow also Apple's and Google's guidelines.

Additional Information: This generally is a $70 contest. The $10/$60 split is due to the rule that I have to choose a winner even if no entry is to my liking. In that case the closest entry will be selected and the fixed amount of $10 paid and we share the rights to the art work 50/50 and agree that neither of us is using it further. The overall compensation is budgeted with $70 however, so if an entry is submitted which I intend to use please be assured the $70 will be paid in full.

Thanks @Azur, generally a refreshing look I have to admit, though #51 is very similar to what @galalogo submitted at #16. Also, they still very much focus on the RSS symbol only and as I mentioned a few times incorporating the logo is perfectly fine, using it as sole foundation for the icon is not so much desired.

Thanks for the continuous submission, @galalogo, I certainly appreciate it. But I can't help sensing a certain random nature. How is this icon supposed to related to news or a news reader or information? It reminds me of a balloon or maybe something bee-hive related, but I wouldn't immediately connect with aforementioned setting.

Again, thanks a lot for that entry, but I wouldn't mind some context :)

@kraman.157, thanks for #41 and #42. I am a bit confused about #42 as I am not sure what it should depict. As for #41, it's actually not bad but we are a bit back to the original problem where the icon is rather a reference to something that generates output (e.g. a chat application) than a news reader.

#42 the lower part of the design incorporates the meaning of news/RSS and the upper part is an arrow which overall says that its the best place for an RSS read.

I just noticed that my entries 58 and 59 are similar to an earlier entry by Kraman. I will respectfully withdraw them from consideration.

  • #57: @DianaGyms, thanks. Takes certainly a different approach but it reminds me of a cable (charging related or similar)
  • #58 & #59: @Altruist Design, thank you. Not bad but your remark regarding the similarities and the withdrawal is duly noted
  • #60: @logoexpert, not bad actually.
  • #61: @logoexpert, thanks but a bit the same issue as mentioned in #45. The speech bubble would rather suggest a chat application.
  • #62: @galalogo, thank you but could you elaborate on the intended meaning? Seems like an arrow or a rocket.
  • #63: @Azur, thank you, generally trying to stay away from the bird concept but this one is actually not bad.
  • #64: @kraman.157, thanks. Not bad as a concept, but it gives somewhat of a signalling impression.
  • #68: @galalogo, thank you too, but I am still a bit unsure how it would relate to RSS :)
  • #70: @Altruist Design, thanks again,

The contest will finish in a bit more than 24 hours and a winner should be announced shortly thereafter as well as whether the winning entry will be eventually used (on which the payout of course depends).

There are quite a few great entries here (you can clearly tell the talent) but I do have to admit I haven't completely fallen in love with one particular entry yet, so it will be a very tough call and there is still plenty of chances for entries (I know, I must be a designer's nightmare :))

Just to provide already some preliminary feedback on the top contenders so far.
These are for now probably the closest ones to "top contenders", but a final decision will of course only be made once the contest has finished
  • #26
  • #52
  • #58 (still would require tweaking because of mentioned similarities)
  • #60

@neroux how about my entry 66 and 67?

@kraman.157, my apologies for missing them out.

#67 is covered by #66, so I will only cover #66. The concept is actually not bad, as I do recognise the connection between the (which I presume it should should symbolise) and the news reading part and if you looks carefully one will also notice the RSS symbol.

The only thing is, the eye concept makes me think more of something surveillance related. At the same time, as the whole symbol uses the RSS symbol style, that part somewhat blends in and disappears.

Concept not bad, maybe a bit too abstract and a tad too line-y
