I am newer to domaining and when I came across this website, I thought I had to signup today, because it seems like there are a lot of kind and knowledgable people here in this community that I could connect with and get to know, as well as learn a thing or two about domaining as a beginner!

I'm sure I've made some noobish mistakes as a budding domainer already (started getting into it about a week go), but hopefully I can get some advice or suggestions and correct any bad habits I might be devoloping at my first stages as a domainer!

I do have a pretty positive mindset so far about a lot of the domains that I've bought, but I do know I've bought some sh*tty ones as well! Lol

I think maybe some of my mistakes are as follows:

1. Buying domains based on the high estimated value provided by Godaddy's Automated Appraisal Search Tool. Lol

2. Maybe buying too many domains as a beginner (106)

3. Buying domains that sound interesting, silly, "Cool" or weird and don't have any real meaning or keywords in them. Like "Froolies.com" to name one... Lol

A few things I think maybe I've done right so far:

1. Instead of buying only short, weird, sounding domains with no real meaning like "Froolies.com," mostly buying domain names with actual real words like "NetCoreBank.com" or "LoanPire.com" instead maybe? Or perhaps those are just as bad as Froolies.com? Lol

2. Getting the discount club membership with Godaddy for a year, and signing up onto Afternic for more exposure.

3. Putting the Afternic landing pages on my domains instead of going with Godaddy's Cashparking, which I think would make it less likely for most to even consider clicking that green banner and buying, let alone click on any of the ads. (Again I'm new, and perhaps my assumptions are not so accurate?)

4. Keeping my prices rather low and reasonable for potential buyers.

5. Having a positive attitude.

6. Being patient.

I'm currently looking into other sites as well for more exposure like: Sedo, Flippa, and NameSilo, but perhaps I don't need to add my domains to these sites just yet. My idea is to just keep it simple as a beginner and wait maybe a month or two with Godaddy and Afternic and so if I make any sales.

Anyway, this is where I am at in my journey as a domainer, if anyone would like to provide some advice like "hey, I think you're going in the right direction so far, but maybe consider doing this here instead" I'd really appreciate it! Please be kind! :D

Hello and welcome to nps! Thank you for taking the time to introduce yourself...so many do not.

There are indeed some nice people here and you will learn quickly who is sharing quality information. Take your time to read and learn...taking old school notes as you go through the threads will help in the long run.

The search feature is your best friend...lots of good information here so go slow before investing too much...best of luck to you!

Welcome to NP

Yeah, you certainly have bought too many, buy 2 or 3 names and try and sell them first, then you reinvest that $$$, then you wont have that $1000 renewal cost in 12 months time. If you sell one of those names for $1000, you are only breaking even and havent made a profit yet.

You mention a name like LoanPire.com, thast fine but its not registered in a single other extension (https://dotdb.com/search?keyword=LoanPire&position=any) Who do you think will buy it from you? The only option you have is to wait it out and see if you get a startup that wants to use that name for their business, this can take years, if at all. Use https://dotdb.com, its a really handy tool when buying domains.

The first thing you need to learn what makes a name valuable. 99% of new domainers make the mistake of registering a lot of names in the beginning thinking they will be easy to sell and find out its not easy to sell them, especially if they have hand-registered available names, 99.9% of the good names have gone and these names people register are available for a reason. Rather spend $200 or $500 on one decent name that will sell, rather than hand-regging 20 or 50 crappy available names that wont ever sell. Always ask yourself "Why are those names available?" The answer is usually pretty obvious.

Hand-regging names and then listing them on every marketplace very rarely works, unless you have good names and have spent decent money buying names. You have to be proactive to sell names and appraoch potential end-users.
Dont look on Sedo and Godaddy and see see all these names listed for $5k and $10k and think you can do tha same and they will sell. 90% of those names listed are newbies with ridiculously inflated prices that will never sell. Why do you think they are still for sale on these platforms.

Stay away from all these new extensions, most companies don't even now they exist so wont be paying good money for them

First research and read this forum from top to bottom for a few months so you understand what makes a name valuable.

All this below only comes after you have read this forum for a while. Some of points are repeated below.

Check out DNJournal.com and Namebio.com to see what type of names sell

Check out expiring lists and see if there is any value in the dropping names.
Email existing owners of decent names and buy 1 or 2 names, you wont know what is decent until you have done your research.
Make sure there are plenty of potential buyers before buying the name. No use having a domain with no potential buyers. I get a list of buyers before buying any names.
Avoid hand-registering names that are available, they are usually available for a reason.
Emailing potential buyers asking if they are interested in the name
Do not use automated appraisal tool...Godaddy, Estibot, Valuate etc....total waste of time
Don't get greedy when starting out and sell for a reasonable price
Reinvest that profit into another name and then repeat the process.
Don't mix letters and numbers
Avoid long names and dont buy 3 word names
Avoid trademark names!!! Company names etc
Always make sure there is a commercial use for a domain you buy.
Stick to .COM domains
Avoid hyphens in domains
Stay away from the new Gtlds

Good luck, hope that helps.

Hi Gilescoley! Thank for the advice! Yeah, I figured I bought too many. Yeah, I've definitely seen some pretty ridiculous prices. I've also seen some domains that have sold for those ridiculous prices, but if you look into the WHOIS, you see that the domain was created in like 2000 or something. And you have no idea when exactly it sold. You can kinda guess obviously if it was created in like 2019 or something. But knowing that information doesn't help much I guess. Lol

I'm definitely thinking I should definitely keep the pricing reasonably low even though I was recommened by a Godaddy rep to shoot higher than even the estimated value rather than lower saying that: "I gaurentee you there will be someone who will buy your low priced domain and sell it for higher. Happens all the time." Yup, I was told this lol. I also talked to one other rep who genuinely thought I was sitting on some good domain names which he thought "would definitely sell if priced reasonbly" which was definitely encouraging!

Overall, I'm not a greedy person, I'm not looking to make 10K on domains or anything crazy like that. lol You know, I'd be happy with anwhere from $100-$1K tops, if someone thinks they can sell it for 50K, fine good luck. Lol To be honest, I think I'm actually going to try to price all my domains within the $50-$1000 range regardless of the estimated values. A few hundred bucks is enough to make me happy to be honest. $50 or $60 on a domain alone would make me happy. Lol

I'm not quite sure what that link is that you've sent me, but, I've definitely seen some legit websites with the word "loan" in it for example:

Eloan
RocketLoans
PersonalLoanPro
QuickenLoans
FastLoanAdvance

That's just the first two pages. But I did see more with the word "Lend" which I did also buy "LendPire.com" as well. But since I'm a noob at domaining maybe my researching method is ridiculous. Lol

I will definitely take some time to go throught the forum. I really appreciate your response and advice!

"I gaurentee you there will be someone who will buy your low priced domain and sell it for higher. Happens all the time."

This is a load a rubbish. Most names wont sell. Pick 100 names on Godaddy and then go back in 2 years time and look if they are still for sale. 99% of the time, they will still be for sale or expired and available again.

People do register a crap name and get lucky with someone just coincidentally wanting that name, but this is the exception to the rule and certainly not a strategy to follow.

Godaddy reps will always tell you that you have some decent names, why do you think this is? It will lead you to buying more names..and where will you register these names?? Correct Godaddy!!!! If you want opinions on your names, get them from a forum or an independent expert, certainly not a registrar that sold you these names.

I'm not quite sure what that link is that you've sent me, but, I've definitely seen some legit websites with the word "loan" in it for example:

https://dotdb.com is a great tool for finding buyers for your names, say you own HOLO.com, type it in and it shows you all the extensions registered in the word HOLO, see below, there you have a list of potential buyers.

.com, .tk, .de, .net, .org, .cn, .co.uk, .ru, .icu, .nl, .info, .top, .eu, .fr, .com.au, .us, .cf, .xyz, .it, .com.br, .ca, .co, .ch, .se, .pl, .es, .online, .in, .be, .biz, .uk, .cz, .at, .club, .dk, .co.za, .vip, .me, .app, .shop, .work, .ir, .cc, .no, .hu, .buzz, .io, .ro, .co.nz, .store, .sk, .cl, .tv, .org.uk, .gr, .com.ar, .co.jp, .co.in, .space, .mobi, .fun, .com.ua, .com.pl, .tech, .website, .ie, .pt, .pro, .nu, .net.au, .mx, .dev, .com.tw, .asia, .life, .tokyo, .blog, .vn, .gq, .kz, .link, .ml, .net.cn, .cat, .fit, .page, .best, .lt, .ltd, .monster, .su, .email, .world, .nz, .ee, .bar, .by, .art, .tel, .rocks, .today, .lv, .one, .ws, .nyc, .host, .company, .london, .me.uk, .group, .ovh, .agency, .hr, .media, .studio, .solutions, .digital, .news, .win, .ma, .network, .guru, .services, .center, .global, .la, .xin, .love, .photography, .systems, .pe, .press, .academy, .cam, .ae, .click, .cool, .team, .ink, .ninja, .city, .consulting, .events, .business, .training, .uz, .care, .hk, .technology

Most of the time its not good enough tyo just have the word "Loan" in it, why would a company called RocketLoans.com want a name called LoanPire.com, it just doesnt make sense. This is where the months of reading and learning comes into play, you start to understand what makes a name valaubale,. what end-users want etc.....Try Googling LendPire as well, nothing really shows up, same when you check other extension registered.

Check out namebio.com and DNJournalk to see regular sales as well, this will help you.

Good luck

Hah yeah, you're probably right. Perhaps someone with the domain "LendEmpire.com" or "EmpireLoans.com" has a better chance at selling their domain if they price it right than I do of mine. Although mine is shorter, less charcters, at least the guy with "LendEmpire" has two full words... So I guess maybe my idea of mixing words and half words together was a bad call... Rookie mistake I suppose. 😶

Well, I'll learn from my mistakes in the future and check out your resources!

In the meantime I have a whole year to flip the domains I just bought. I'm pricing them all pretty low at mostly 60 at the minimum to like 100, and a few higher ones, but nothing past 500. I think this is a good strategy considering that most of my domain names are probably trash. Lol But I'm positive there are a lot of impulse buyers out there who would be willing to buy my cheap ones either just because they are amused by them or they think they could sell it for higher. We'll see!

I feel like "CompletelyEnglish.com" has a higher chance of selling tbh. A lot of online English teaching going on right now you know. Names like that I imagine I can get away with a little higher pricing maybe a couple hundred or so.

Thanks again for your advice! Very much appreciated!
