sales World.Travel Domain Name Sells for $41,000

NameSilo
This week a source confirmed that the domain name world.travel has been sold in the aftermarket by Top.Domains for $41,000. This is significantly more than any sale in the extension listed in NameBio. The domain name shares an interesting current redirection use with another major sale from earlier this year.

The .TRAVEL Extension

The .travel extension is currently operated by Donuts, and it would be easy to consider it a new domain extension. However, it is not classified that way, at least not according to how ICANN use the term new gTLD. For this reason, the .travel extension is not listed on new extension databases such as nTLDStats.

The .travel extension was in the second group of sponsored TLDs approved by ICANN in 2005. Initially the .travel extension had restricted ownership. That has subsequently been opened, and anyone can purchase domains in the extension. The intention remains that .travel domains will, in general, be used by individuals, governments, organizations and businesses providing travel related information or services.

Early in 2018 Donuts acquired the .travel top level domain (TLD), and announced relaunch of the extension, with sales taking place through its registrar partners.

At time of writing, Dofo statistics indicate about 23,000 registrations of .travel domain names, of which 1800 are currently listed for sale on domain marketplaces.

According to DomainNameStats, there are 125 .travel extension sites in the Alexa 1M. A number of domain names with the structure COUNTRY.travel are developed, such as Peru.travel and Russia.travel. Numerous travel agencies have also developed sites on the extension.

The World.Travel Sale

The domain name world.travel was created on March 3, 2008, and has been registered continuously since that time. While privacy masks some details, it seems to have been in a few hands over the years. The new owner has the name registered at Namecheap.

The sale was made by Top.Domains which bills itself this way: ’TopDomains is a market of premium new domain names, including the world's top domains.’ The domain name world.travel still appears on their site, but is listed as sold.

The TopDomains portfolio of premium names covers numerous sectors and extensions. Some examples of the names on their site: Car.App, Crypto.Store, Go.Link, Epic.Win, VR.inc and many more. The majority of their listed names have buy-it-now pricing, with payment plans offered through DAN. They do not seem linked to any particular registry, with all the major new extension registries represented amongst their holdings.

Current Use of World.Travel

In checking current use of domain names that recently sold for good prices, I come across various situations. A few are rapidly put into developed use, while in more cases they redirect to an existing website, supposedly with a plan to consolidate to the new name at a future date. In many cases the name simply sits unused, often without even a change in the DNS settings from the marketplace listing. Not infrequently, the domain name is again listed for sale, sometimes with monetized parking.

In the case of world.travel, the name is used for redirection, but not in the manner one might expect. It redirects to a user profile from Australia at the Steam game distribution site. The interesting thing is the same redirection is used for the domain name world.market that sold earlier in 2020 for $35,000. Neither I, nor my source, know the eventual plan for these two names. I did a bit of investigation to see if there were other world names similarly redirected, but did not find any, although I did not search comprehensively.

Steam is operated by Valve and is a game distribution service, originally for PC gaming, but now serving most platforms. The Steam user profile linked from world.travel says that he, or she, is the founder of SteamLevels.

A Pretty Great Name

I would argue that world.travel is a great descriptive match across the dot in a high value sector. It is a natural for a global travel agency or information source. As such, the price does not surprise me. World.travel sold at about four times the price of names like internet.travel, booking.travel and space.travel, but, as strong as those names are, I would argue world.travel is better.

There are 66 sales of .travel extension names listed on NameBio, with the highest sales price internet.travel at $11,400 in 2016. Only 9 of the sales are at prices of $5000 or more, and only 4 at $10,000 or more.

According to Dofo, the exact word world is registered in 439 TLDs, and is currently listed for sale in 233 extensions.

I also had a look at the two word name WorldTravel, and it is registered in 126 TLDs, and for sale in 31, according to Dofo.

The domain name MyWorld.com sold for $1.2 million in 2017 according to NameBio.

Congratulations To Seller And Buyer

Congratulations to the seller and buyer for a great name that sold at a strong, but justified in my opinion, price.

If the seller, or buyer, of this domain name is on NamePros, or others know additional details of the sale or plans for the domain name, I hope they will add the information in the comments section.

Special thanks to my source at Premium.Domains for confirming the price of this sale. Also, I wish to sincerely thank Dofo, NameBio, DomainNameStats, DomainTools, and DomainIQ that I used in the research for this article.

Thanks for writing about it. Travel extension is quite meaningful. And, agree with you some maybe think it is a new gTLD. Anyhow, it's a great descriptive name.

Thank you for the post, Bob! It's cool to learn about this sale.

Even though the amount is good, I still think it's undersold. Could go for more to the right end-user - 100K+.

Their inventory is just amazing. I wonder if they have some good connections with the registries, or maybe just a portfolio by some registry itself. Maybe they just started very early in the new TLD space though.

Another great write up and thanks.

I wonder if the timing of this sale was affected by the pandemic and other world events with the significant downturn in travel.

HA? just went to the site and it's forwarded to a Steam (the game portal) login for someone? Look forward to seeing what the true end use will be. Thanks Bob!

A well presented and researched post Bob and for me, this really was an " intro " to .travel.

Just an opinion of course but it seemed to me the domain World.Travel was surely a good value buy at 41k.

Thanks for another interesting and informative post Bob!

I tried to register .travel domains a couple of times in the past.
But I was required to provide some sort of my "Company's information that shows relation to travel business" if I remember correctly.
So it was unsuccessful to me as a private person.
By the way, same drill was with .job extension I think(had to give up on a .job domain after registration).
Could be outdated info though.
My apology, article does mention that now .travel is available to public (but with "intention to use in the industry" still)

World.Travel seems to have sold kind of low. If N/a/s could go for xxx,xxx high. Then World.Travel should've been at least low xxx, xxx.

The travel industry is huge but i guess the corona made this domain go down and so an end user took it as an opportunity to invest.

The article is as good as ever. Thank you for sharing , Sir.

Donuts
I'm not very confident about Donuts because most of the tails they hold are not well recognized by the market now.Maybe it has something to do with the orientation of this company. In any case, running a registration office is a long-term business, but developing so many tails at the same time requires a lot of investment.Sometimes, too long a cycle could ruin people's beliefs.

World.Travel
It's a great domain name, and I think creative domain names will be popular in the near future.

Great article. Thanks Bob.

Would love to know the cost of maintaining (i.e. renewing) that portfolio annually.
