How to check whether domain has been dropped?

How do I whether a domain name has been dropped? Is checking the whois creation date enough? The website I use is whois.domaintools.com

If all you want is a "PASS/FAIL" result, you can try the lookup on Yahoo:

smallbusiness.yahoo.com

There's a search field under the 'Get A Domain'. It will tell you whether the domain is taken or available.

From my experience, sometimes Domaintools still show 'Pending Delete', but actually some domain vacuum cleaner has already siphoned the name from the drop pool. Also sometimes checking the creation date is too much information for me, especially if i know the name will drop today and im just doing the lookups to check whether it has actually dropped yet. So some kind of binary flag, is all i need.

Thanks for the reply. Actually, I am trying to buy a domain name off someone and the creation of the domain is in 2002. I would like to know if it is possible that the domain had expired and re-registered but the creation date shown in domaintools shows otherwise?

The creation date in the WHOIS record typically shows the date on which it was created but if it was dropped (effectively deregistered) then that date would show the date on which it was registered after being dropped. A domain can be removed from the zonefile and be restored without dropping.

Thanks, but that just sounds out of my league

So, if erm the domain is removed from the zonefile and restored without dropping, does this count as dropped or aged?

my 5 cents on this:

That depends on what you call "dropped". If you mean the former owner did not renew the domain by paying renewal fee effectively letting it go free for taking by others - then you cant say for sure even if creation date says for example 1-1-2005 that it has been never dropped since that. Because if say in 2010 former owner dropped it it could be sold on expiring/closeout aucton and creation date can be left as is. In this case as auctioning registrar was holding the domain on redemption/renewal status (as godaddy does for closeouts) and technically domain was not dropped if bought during that period on auction. You have no means to know if it was sold by the owner or dropped.
Should you count such a case as drop or not is up to you. To me it means that even if it was not renewed many times the same many times was it bought before deleted by someone again - so theres demand for the name all the way down from the very first reg till now.

whois.domaintools.com usually shows the amount of drops under the Whois
History tab - Registrar History:

Demonstration with 2 of my names:

Registrar History: 2 registrars with 2 drops.
Created:1998-11-12 - dropped twice so it must have been first registered in 1996 or earlier.

If the domain has probably never been dropped, it will show this:
http://whois.domaintools.com/ze.net
Registrar History: 1 registrar
Created:1996-05-30
If a name doesn't show the amount of drops behind the amount of registrars it is USUALLY never been dropped. Some names slip thru somehow tho, so make sure to check archive.org to check if the name shows history from before the official registration date.

I am trying to buy an expired domain, and wanted to check if the domain is legit and how many times it has been dropped. I also wanted to know if the webiste is related to niche (tutorial) or not, and should I consider buying it?
