Being someone who hand-regs names most of the time, it has become increasingly difficult coming up with good names.

While ExpiredDomains come to the rescue most of the time, coming up with good general exact match and brandable names are particularly turning out to be challenging.

So I wish to ask the community, how do you come up with good names for hand reg?
Has it worked for you?

If you would like to share it, what domains have you sold that have been hand registered by you?

Research, and some luck :xf.wink:

https://www.news.ucsb.edu/2020/020005/quantum-future

The C2QA team comprises several national labs, research centres, universities, and industry, including IBM, MIT, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Princeton University, Yale University, and Stony Brook University.

...domain was available, so I just hand reg'd the LLLL(.com) and will contact the C2QA team. :xf.cool:

Because of NDA, I can't disclose but you can figure out at my domain portfolio at Squarely.com

^ I hand reg'd a whack of weed domains (having initimate knowledge of the subject material, lol). Sold dozens within the span of months when the industry opened up. Good ones got grabbed quick, which helped me to understand the direction the industry was going.

Interesting, I have sold well over 1,000 domains and only 1 NDA.

I saw Keith got in that area earlier, amongst a few others. Back in 2005 I was lucky to hit the niche of .co.in, hand regged and sold a lot whilst others were following the.in release.

It seemed domainers starting to reg anything possible in two words combination forms...

sharkhospital.com (hospital that taking care for someone bitten by shark) is free for reg now.

and I see why

If you don't mind sharing, what are some examples of domains you registered and which ones got sold.
I just want to see what types of variations you registered.

What were your best .co.in sellers
Are they all developed now? .co.in being very specific ccTLD
Are you Indian?

I started with 420 as a prefix to any relevant keyword ie. light, grow, seed etc. I branched into canna, cannabis, CBD, weed etc. in TLD and ccTLD's before the industry opened. I researched, travelled to various expos and met with officials to extract any insight into the new regulations surrounding legalization.

From 26 Indian states to Whois.co.in,quite a few over the years totalling over $400K. Never check on sales, once they are gone they are gone.
No, not Indian.

All the states were available for hand reg? Wow... How long was this after .co.in was introduced? Not trying to learn anything. Just a good story to hear. And maybe quote on my domaining book some day ;)

Any other names you remember? What was the top 5 in terms of price.

Are you into Cannabis business too? or you went to the expos just from domaining perspective?

I live in Thailand, "almost legal" and expect the floodgates to open in the early new year.
Interesting times.

I have come across some 3L cctld domains that have been deleted. I have checked, like all other 3L names this too has TM but no URDP issue.
Should I go ahead and register them for those cctld's ?

As most of the common methods are already shared here, here's my turn to give out some unorthodox ones (though I'm still new to domaining) -

For brandable name ideas, I'd suggest checking out ProductHunt.com. Nearly every digital product get on there before public release.

Second is SpyFu.com) SpyFu (paid version) is tool to reveal keywords people are using for a specific domain. It gives you an idea what's being searched on a website. I use this tool to see what domains are getting the most attention on marketplaces. See (can't add pics/links):

DAN:

Just register the similar domains or alternate extensions. :)

As DAN itself publicly shows (on most domains) how much traffic a domain is getting, you may also hire a freelancer to scrape all those pages and sort them by traffic then hand reg similar domains.

Third one is the most effective which I'll keep it to my self for now. I may share it after making a decent moey.

@abstractdomainer please do not hand-reg, you will only lose money. Unless you are extremely clever (only you know that), but in general, only a few people in millions are :) Most are massively losing money.
I am really not very smart but I have sold a lot of hand regs between xxx to low xxxxx

Hand-reg is a skill. One way to hand-reg is to predict the future product/service/category and grab the best fit name and wait for your turn. On the other hand, you can simply pay a small premium and acquire the best of the best trendy, premium, and dictionary domains and wait for your turn.

Always ask your self below questions:
1) Are you creating something remarkable? Something brandable?
2) Do you see a market for that name?
3) Do you use it for your business?
4) Do you see many target end-users for the name?
5) In the worst case, you should be able to develop your domain and make money.

Learn from experts, adopt their buying and selling habits, and follow them. Follow the trends. Learn from websites like namepros, namebio, hugedomains and buydomains.

You should always check for names when you read that a market niche is expanding. I trad that there is a shortage of guard dogs, and this may get worse as housing repossessions increase, A quick bit of Googling, and whois checking, and I discovered that GuardPets.com was unregistered, but the singular is up for sale by Huge Domains ($2,095). I think the plural is better than the singular, but GD values the singulat at $77 more than the plural. The plural is valued at $1,500, and I'm pleased with that for a hand reg speculation.

Might be worth reading tech, medical, science, finance (and other areas) news, articles, research papers etc for potential new words, terms or trends.....

You might be able to get some nice EMD's or good brandables....

I do agree with you. I have few domains hand regd that I believe to be valuable as the tech , science and new researches make their proper use. May be it take 10 years or more.
