Earlier today, the domain 'sex.crypto' sold for 230 ETH, or approximately $90,000 at press time. The domain extension .crypto is generated by Unstoppable Domains and is censorship-resistant. The transaction, which occurred on OpenSea's token marketplace, was completed by a user named Maxstealth. Currently, he owns 196 .crypto domains in total. [Read all]

Sorry It is not waste it is future, that's crazy and scare for gltd domain investors, when I use Etherem Dapps and I realized that 10 years later crypto domains will beat any Gtlds/NGtlds ass off, that's like i-phone compares to Nokia, Kodak, it can store so many things and resolve web 3.0, p2p mail severs, tokens, coins, avatars, any digital properties. Use native blockchain domain names have a lot of benefits than Gtlds, your domains won't get hijacking from those big companies' by filing WIPO, no one can get your domain name unless someone has your private key.

Cool. Best of luck to the buyer.

Maybe one day they can get the domain sex.crypto that will be in the actual DNS used by 99.9% of internet devices when ICANN approves it.

They don't need ICANN to approves it, just need browsers resolve it. Actually I hope such things don't exist but it's inevitable and too bad I don't have enough capital to invest more otherwise I will, only secure little of names I want.
They are under ENS and ZNS peer 2 peer server which means decentralized name server system.

ok, it's a bad analogy that I compared Gtlds and Blockchain domains as i-phone and Nokia since Nokia had become useless, it's more like Ferrari (.com )to Bumblebee (.eth)...
.com will alway has its value to demonstrate company's authority of their brand name. (driving Ferrari is like driving victory)
but I strongly suggest to secure 1-2 .eth (sorry .crypto) of your most like in .com you owned just in case, that's only $5 /pc(as of now 0.013 eth).
I spent $20 bought 3 of them.

I am unsure of what decentralized web traffic stats are but if DappRadar is any indication, the decentralized web is still only a small percentage of overall internet traffic. Many DEFI dapps have only hundreds or perhaps a few thousand monthly users. Meanwhile Facebook has billions of monthly users. Regardless, the danger with this type of domain is that it could be used for nefarious purposes - trafficking, etc Crypto currencies particularly Bitcoin gained infamy due to the Silk Road website. But as others have mentioned, one advantage of a .Crypto domain over any GTLD is that the domain is truly in the hands of the registrant and not subject to ridiculous WIPO decisions resulting from startups which don't want to pay for an aftermarket domain.

I lobe the concept of decentralized dns, but they should use a two letter TLD if they want to be serious. .crypto is too damn long. I don't even buy 6 letter .co

What a waste of a reply. 1) You post your opinion, which doesn't actually hold any weight, anywhere. 2) It happened to be only your opinion, with no supporting evidence, or even insight as to why you even have an opinion about it. 3) Your response served absolutely no purpose, it didn't help anyone whatsoever (way too vague, no supporting arguments, this was covered already). 4) Now we attempt to guess why you went out of your way to post that. A) Boredom - Covid-19 gets to everyone, stuck in a house. B) Trolling - It's addicting to some people, even me. C) You really hate the thought of domains, which would be ironic, since you are using the internet, which is just made up of a bunch of domains. D) You personally know the person who wrote this, yet masked yourself and troll their every post. E) Cynical world views - "The world sucks, and everyone else in it". F) You believe there is a lot of waste in the world, and you want to help out in any way you can. so you go about the internet, tagging places with just one word: "Waste"

Absolutely, this guy knows what he is talking about. Domains are purchased for 2 reasons. 1) You will use it. 2) You don't want someone else to use it (this includes buying it so somoene else can purchase it from you). Domain names / extensions are simply digital real estate. There is a limited quantity, and we have seen the exponential growth of people "Using" the internet, and even publishing websites ever since companies like SQ, Shopify, Weebly, Wix made it SUPER easy to do so. The reason why this, and .crypto, .zil etc are such a great idea - is because it is literally doing the same exact thing as regular domains did for the internet, but to wallet addresses instead of IP addresses. Voice.com just sold for 30Million dollars, and someone will use it so people can 'remember' their website name, instead of their 107.180,41,144 actual address. Crypto NEEDS this for it to be adopted mainstream. Which it will be.

We need proof fellas;
Can you explain why?

Convoluted set up to access ngtld, for one.

Doesnt really seem like a “domain”

What is “OpenSea marketplace”? Never heard.
