Are you really sure that building a business or investing in a cctld in one unstable country that can can change the rules unilaterally on his own cctld is a good bet?

Who remembers the .uk.co story? It was many years ago. A lot of small uk businesses loose their domains overnight...

It's possible that they may restrict registration to Columbians.

Yes five years, but what if if the politic situation changes before? Who knows what they gonna decide, just look the UK with Brexit. Politicians don't have problems to break contracts even if the country will go in a recession just to please who is voting for them. It is their job after all.

I am not in politics and I don't think this is the right place to speak about this.

It is just an example...

I don't think I remember that. I just searched Google and there's no mention of .uk.co... Do you mean UK.com cause if so, that's just a sub domain.

Answering this as a consultant (not my own investing views, so end-user POV) but when any of my clients are unable to get the .com that they want, .co is the next one they ask about

It was a subdomain of .co, the Colombian registry decided that .co was only for use in Colombia and hundreds of domains were cancelled in a few days. It was many years ago. Anyway the things in a couple of years, or months, can take the same way again...

Thanks. Are you able to find any news articles about it? I can't find anything about it, it's not mentioned on their wiki and there isn't really any connection between the UK and columbia so it seems a bit strange. I searched for +".uk.co" with Columbia and other combos...

I dont have time now to search the old news but I remember the story. It was a subdomain marketed by some uk registrars to the small businesses that cound not get their matching .co.uk. name at reg fee. I remember reading a few articles when overnight all these small businesses loose their domains. I think the .uk.co registry was handled by one university in Colombia. I cant recall more at the moment, sorry. Maybe some uk domainers may remember something more about this...

I wonder if you have it confused with the introduction of the .UK extension? We have had .co.uk for years and then they introduced .uk which was indeed a bit of a farce.

It was many years ago, I am not confused. It was a subdomain similar to uk.com so it was not of interest to domain investors just for small biz endusers...

Where the young people go where the next, I say .xyz now 1950 sites in Alexa 1 million and will increase.
.net sounds too old
.org for non profit organizations
.co country code very limited. ( domainers like it cuz it’ll never compete with .com but market doesn’t care.)

.net > .co > .in

Even if .co and .in are ccTLD, they sound better in your branding, and if your website is global, you get generic global back links and and you don't attract local citation, they will be ranked globally
if I want a country specific site for the same brand for India, I will use .co.in

xyz might be tradable in the domain aftermarket right now, but it has a very unprofessional vibe and it will fizzle out like .info
AT least .info can be used for strictly informational sites, what will XYZ mean? It is a 3 syllable TLD and looks spammy and unserious.

The exact match 2 words and single words will be easier to rank and I would buy a high value keyword .xyg for development, but I would 301 redirect it to a brandable .com if I plan to sell and I am done ranking.

I target 3D, VR, single word, pronounceable LLL in .xyz.
