discuss Massive Portfolio Domainers

Those of you with several thousand domains, did you build up the portfolio over time or you have some automated scripted which buys up domains on expiredlists and closeouts upon a certain criteria/algorithm?

I can't imagine how one can buy 10000 domain names manually.

Just went through the portfolio of a random dude on DAN and he had over 7000 domains and many looked like they were registered automatically and yet some were gold

No automated scripts on this end. However I'm not sure if I meet the criteria you set forth: my portfolio is only 2K as opposed to several thousands.

some when they find a trending keyword have an excel sheet with two columns.

column one would be a list of the best and typical keywords used in front of a domain that have been registered the most frequent. (prefix) next is another column. Same premise but this time the keyword is at the end. (suffix)

in the excel the middle column is left empty to be filled later on when a new "Trending keyword" comes up.

then they copy and paste all columns together into a text file. and from there remove the spaces.

first set will be the prefix set
second set the suffix set

both sets containing the "trending keyword column"

and boom! now you have a list of all possible good domains to bulk register quickly based on a new keyword.

no need to make this more difficult by looking for some magic software or script to do this.

I own several thousand domains. While I bought a handful of smaller portfolios over time, the vast majority were collected one at a time, over many years.

If you buy 1-5 domains a day for several years it does not take that long to get there.

You have a list of prefix and suffix you like to share. I have found a few best prefix best suffix om the internet, but they seem more like a list that an end user would use to hand reg, not something a domainer would use..

I like Best, Buy, Solutions etc, and usually use my common sense to find words, but a handy list would be helpful.

I agree. I registered 200 domains in a day when .co had the offer... :(

I doubt anyone would share, especially if they get good results. Best bet would probably be to look at reported sales to spot common prefixes and suffixes in names that have sold and make your own list.

I own several thousand domains... 90% were purchased one at a time. I have basically bought 5-10 domains a day for a few years. I primarily try to acquire domains similar to those I have sold for a big profit... insurance, finance, crypto, bitcoin, 5 number .com, 4 number .net, domains that start with buy, easy, compare, or fast, etc.

Brand spanking new to this site, been watching domain sherpa podcasts and the likes. Out of curiosity, for those of you who have huge portfolios, how many names do you sell on average per week? Thanks!

There are some good thread here from Successful sellers. Check out posts by @Nikul Sanghvi @AbdulBasit.com @NameBuyer.com etc
I think for those doing premium names (not selling GEO, SEO, EMD domains on massmail), the sell though is anywhere from 0.5% a year to 2-3% at most. Meaning for every hundred domains, they sell 0.5 to 3 domains a year

I've reached 4,100 domains this month and most of them are acquired individually via auction houses and some of them from direct owners. To reach at this level of portfolio size, it took a decade.

But in the last 3 years, I've doubled my portfolio. I don't plan to continue buying at the same speed as it takes lot of time, energy, and money.

But in the last 3 years, I've doubled my portfolio. I don't plan to continue buying at the same speed as it takes lot of time, energy, and money.

Yeah, this is how it was for me too. There have been some people that put together a sizable portfolio from scratch in a couple years, but they usually have large amounts of money and even then, they've dedicated a large amount of their time to the effort, and focused on it every day. In addition, many of them spent hundreds of hours learning, or had years of knowledge in prior branding experience.

In 2018, I went through a period where I bought 1,000 domains in a month. That's about 33 per day and a $12k-$18k bill for the month. If I'm buying from expired auctions I'd say I can buy about 3-8 per hour. If I'm buying off of expired lists, I'd say it is about 1-4 per hour. Once I had my routine down, it would usually take about 5 hours per day. Sometimes it would take 10 hours. That's on top of my normal life. It was chaotic, but for me it works out better to buy it all at once like this and completely focus on it.

How do you do it? Filter a list of whatever type of domains you're looking for, get the list of 1,000 domains and start grinding away. It's painful, but after the first 10,000 names you'll get better at it. I ran them through my tool, but that cost me about $700 or so for the month in addition to the $12k-$18k. But even if you automate a portion of it like I did, it doesn't necessarily make it quicker, because I'd still do the same amount of research once I'd find a decent listing. Scanning the list is the fast part once you're efficient at it, but researching each potential purchase is what took most of my time. For me it was just grinding...hard.

In normal months I'm just buying 0-5 per day if I come across them. In the past, I'd look at a filtered list of 1,000 domains per day from the expired auctions and never missed a day in 2-3 years. Now, I don't look at the daily auctions unless I'm in a buying mode. Over the years I've learned that type of intentional focus works best for me. I focus on the 1-2 things I'm trying to achieve at the time and ignore all other type of tasks, work, or distractions as much as possible.

The easy part is the buying easy to keep collecting we all enjoy this side it is making the extra effort to create the turn over is the task.

I think the most difficult part is getting started when you have a small budget. You have to have a decent size portfolio in order to make sales but at the same times you can't have it too big since you can't afford to pay the renewal fees. Right now I have 50-60 domains in highly speculative niches and I'm waiting to make some XX.XXX sale to increase my portfolio and scale it up.

Who is the one managing the portfolio? An Individual who is working full time may able to manage under 10k names... But, companies like huge domains l buy domains may have a business setup.

registrars now offer bulk registration from 500 to 5k names. so to make it easy for registrants.

but, I think - it takes years... if not .. then those registrations are auto-generated as said by @WhoaDomain.com and then pasted onto bulk registrations box.

Hi

yeah, they will add up quickly

next thing you know, you're paying an average of $20K+ a year, in renewal fees for 2000 domains.

imo....

Do we really need a Quantity portfolio or the Quality portfolio? SMH

You need both if you want to make steady passive sales and have a repeatable business model.

... determine the quantity .com of names (cornering for $100+ per year) you need in order to sell quality .com at full price.

For some daily domainers credited selling domains is a number game, they said reg for 20-40k names and liquidate them for 5% within a year for average 2-3k prices, drop 10-20% unwanted annually, I have no idea how that works.
I mean the second year added up to 50-60k domains that would be a disaster.

This is what I think. Correct me if I am wrong in my thinking.
While there are THE obvious "Quality" names, like 1 word.com/Net/.co or even other TLDsm 2 word.com which one knows for certain will have a buyer.

But many of the reported sales are words that leaves your head shaking, something noone on namepros would have picked up for $20 BIN. I think those are where the quantity matter. Buy a lot of brandables and hop to profit with a 0.5%-1% sell through
