Here's my question..what is the value of domain hack? I've seen some good domain hack and i was wondering about the value of it. I myself own one and i'm not sure whether or not i should get more. I haven't seen any sale of domain hack. Why do we register domain hack? Is it because the domain looks cool or because there's a potential end user who's willing to buy such domain?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Did you know Facebook owns and uses the domain hack Ocul.us for their Oculus VR headset brand across the social media?

This week's update of Nami.ng is up!

Does that mean that if I register some xn--12345.ru it will not work? Or it is even prohibited to register?

I would test out the url with an emoji to see if it works with the extension. Use popular emojis that you know that are taken. I pretty sure xn-12345.ru can be registered, but you would have to type out the xn-12345.ru for the URL to work instead of using an emoji.ru

That's cool to see large corporations using domain hacks. That's like free marketing for domain hackers. I just found out that Entrepreneur Magazine uses the hack entm.ag

Thanks, I understand the basic logic behind IDNs and punycodes. What is missing for me - what does it mean when some ccTLD doesn't support emoji registration? In other words - how should they support it, if emoji registration just means to register the corresponding punycode?

You are right. IDNs and Emojis are technically decoded using their corresponding punycodes, but ccTLDs have something called language mapping enabled with the extensions they offer. That's why they don't recognize every punycode even though they are IDN aware.

.cn only supports Chinese alphabets and their matching punycodes, which means, they do not support punycodes of other languages and of course emojis.

Emojis have a completely different punycode mapping, and thus, language specific ccTLDs don't support emojis.

If we enter a punycode of an emoji, and if the ccTLD doesn't have emoji-punycode mapping enabled, even though the domain name is valid, but the registry won't recognize it.

Looks like the domain hack sho.es which once sold for $11,000, dropped and was caught by Catched.com

SHO.ES last sold for $3,150 on 2020-07-31 at Catched.com

This happened to a few hacks we have sold in the past including Kar.ma, Fir.st (sold for $15K) and some .et domain hacks.

Huge silly losses.

web4africa.com charges $27.50/yr for .ng names. Don't know whether it's the cheapest or not

Some posts back there was discussion of the me.nu sale, and whether the price should have been higher.
Perhaps someone previously posted this and I missed it, but thought I would add the following sales stats, at least as reflected by sales on NameBio (obviously probably less than 20% of all retails sales):
  • 0 domain hack sales above $200,000
  • 3 domain hack sales above $100,000
  • 23 domain hack sales >= $20,000
  • 53 domain hack sales >=$10,000
The me.nu sale placed between the wall.et sale from last year and the wi.de sale this year, in the top 10 of all hack sales on NameBio.

Note the NameBio seem to define hack in the narrower way, a single word broken by the dot, and not the way some do that also include two word terms separated by the dot.

Here is the list of domain name hacks on NameBio.

Bob

I wonder how many of these sub $20,000 domain hacks are purchased by cash-strapped startups?
It appears to be an affordable way of getting a unique and memorable domain name.

Yeah I have seen that, buts it's £27.50 pound not the US Dollar, about $36
I was hoping to find a Secret registrar that is not listed in tldes for a cheaper price.

Don't know why it's showing in GBP for you. Are you from the UK?

This is what I'm seeing:

thanks for pointing this out.

No, I'm currently in Spain, That's weird this is a Fraud from web4africa, because even if I'm located in the UK they must convert the pricing to the british pound, because british pound is higher than US dollar.
here is a screenshot of the pricing they show it to me:

Not a good business practice. They should either display the prices in Euro since you are located in the EU zone (converted from the USD value), or should display an option to change to your preferred currency. This is how Dynadot and many other reputed registrars work.

Nice additions. Keep up the great work! Have you tried added nami.ng to the "References" section of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_hack ? It will help get exposure for the site as that wiki site is the #1 result that pops up when you search "domain hacks" on google.

Fantastic idea, really appreciate it! I'll get right on it.

Good day domain hackers! Anyone know of an automated appraisal site that is somewhat accurate for domain hacks? GoDaddy and Estibot estimates are not even in the ballpark. Ex. the domain "fi.sh" is appraised for $1273 on GD and $640 on Estibot, I'd pay that in a heartbeat!

Unfortunately they are none. Domain hacks are too small of a niche. We usually recommend Namebio's domain hack sales search as reference.

I don't think it has anything to do with being strapped for cash, if that were the case, they'd just buy a different extension for a few bucks. It's more of availability and unique/cleverness. Not all dot com's are for sale. Example: cha.se was sold for $7500, good luck buying chase.com even if you are willing to pay millions for it.

Weekly update of Nami.ng is now up!

We are now tracking over 350 short, single-word domain hacks currently in personal or business use, as well as those used either for redirection, or as a domain shortener by larger corporations.

Thanks to everyone who's been contributing along the way!

@CobraKai I tried getting the site referenced on Wikipedia, but it keeps being deleted as sponsored/self promoted link :(

Just noticed the tags the OP used for this thread; amazingly, looks as if he/she intended it to be created as a joke. Look how it took off into the real deal :) In every joke, there is a grain of truth.

That's a bummer that they won't allow nami.ng to be listed. At least you tried.
