information A Quick Due diligence, saved losing $25k+

Today I come across ASZ.com which is listed for sale at eBay, priced $25k, it's not everyday you see Premium names listed on eBay, even looking into the seller's feedback which was quite disappointing to say the least, showed me this sale isn't gonna be smooth.

So I went over to #Google and typed the following ...

"ASZ.com stolen"
"ASZ.com domain name stolen"

After reading through a few articles, I also found a tweet which was posted July 28th 2020 ( see attached),

So I simply asked the seller a legitimate question....

Did you do Due Diligence on ASZ(.)com, before you purchased this? Where did you buy this?

His response you can see from the attached picture...

Last week I come across VVH(.)com which was listed here at Namepros.com

Again went to #google but nothing come up, so I checked the history on the name via http://web.archive.org I found the previous owners contact details and rang them, to check if they sold the name, only to learn they got hacked.

Quick reminder, always to your Due Diligence !!!!

I had a car stolen once. It took several years to recover it. When I recovered it I sold it.

Same thing happens with domains.

We need the current status, we need current evidence. Until we are current everything is speculative.

Glad you got the car back.

I'm sure the new buyer had questions, because when I buy a cars here in the UK I do a HPI check.

So if I was buying a classic car from 1980, I will be checking how many owners the car had, if it's been stolen etc

Same thing happens with domains.

The Profile on twitter didn't let me DM, not connected, a cartoon picture and a website link going to @DAN.COM ( looks untrusted and not professional )

So I don't see a problem with this, >>>

So far all he is guilty of is a Twitter cartoon picture and a website link to DAN?....Good catch!

Let us know when his Twitter profile changes to a duck.

So now the original owner is still unknown and he lost his domain, also the thief sold the domain name and received the cash. The OP has bought the domain and he paid for it, maybe he did not know that this domain name was stolen. The problem can be solved only if the OP gets his money back from the thief, the original owner gets his domain, and the thief should be taken to the prison after he returns the money to OP.

If the original owner did not step up with a proof that he owns this domain name, then there is no point of saying that the domain is stolen because that does not negatively affect the thief, It is bad for the OP who has paid for the domain.

One thing to be careful about when buying expensive domain names,
If the price is too low, we should check to see if there is any problem

You are twisting this !!! I was not looking for a thief, and never said he is or was.

I started this thread to remind people to do Due Diligence, in the last few weeks I have come across 3L's which are questionable. The 2 names on this thread shows me the current owners obviously didn't do it!!

Sorry I was referring to the Lambo guy not to the OP.

If something is too good to be true, it usually is!

100% agree, but all names should be checked when buying.

For me I need invoices with real names on them for my records (KYC), incase in future I get chased up for any reason. I like to cover my as#

Alleged on his fake news blog

This post is 100% true, or so it goes.

The domain was stolen in 2007. The thief attempted to sell it on numerous occasions. The domain was marked red hot on several platforms, including Escrow.com, Sedo, Flippa and NameJet.

Whether you bought it for $1k or $20k its status won't change. It's a stolen asset.

MxDominios is Mr. Richard Lau. He has had personal run ins with the persistent, serial thief.

I would not question Richard Lau, one of the most honest, prolific domain entrepreneurs in the industry.

Hi @Acroplex ! Its always good to see you join the conversation!

I am not going to question the investigative work you have already done to establish the domain was stolen, at one point. Your contributions in this area is very admirable.

The domain was stolen in 2007

Is there any current information? I have not seen any current evidence that it remains stolen.

Is it a possibility the domain has been returned to the rightful owners and sold?

At what point does it become ok to own this domain then, if original owner cannot be located nor has made attempt to recover his asset? What has to happen for it to become a clean slate.. an expired drop and then a mad auction? At this point it's ok for the registrar to profit off the $$$$$ made but not a previous, honest-intentioned investor?

I agree with the point ID made, the OP was reckless in using tweet words "due diligence" on a platform such as Twitter, it sounds somewhat accusatory. I mean due diligence would have been in finding out the current owner is Lambo, easily identified as a member with good standing here on NP, and Jag could have simply PM'd here him rather than calling out on a platform such as Twitter, viewed by anyone anywhere at any time.

It is common for domains to be listed on multiple venues by old owners who haven't removed the listing.

The way someone responds, dick-like or whatever, who cares!! That's besides the point and to start a thread over it just adds to the mess the world is in today over "oh my gawd, can u believe they said that or spoke that way oh my gawd my life is over I am so offended and like people are sick and dying but who cares I am offended by the words that person used"

Words matter, but on social media and especially Twitter, take it all with a grain of salt when off-handed remarks get you off-handed responses, or they come from couch warriors with nothing to lose.

Also Jag was well-intentioned I'm sure, just doing his proper homework on a domain with questionable history. Can't blame someone for that, and I've also known Jag to be stand-up, polite to a tee. So both parties are correct in their foundation, we've got someone who came off as a troll and another who came off as a dick. Where's the middle ground? Guess a thread on NP..

Shake hands dudes.. water under the bridge.

The domain was offered here on NP's by the thief in 2016 and 2018.

After that exchange closed down and the thief was banned, he faked the domain's return. Then changed the WHOIS to a fake UPS address.

Then, he approached independent brokers to dispose of the domain. I don't know who sold it to the current owner. I simply identified it as a domain that was reported stolen not too long ago.

It’s really up to the rightful owner to take the matter to court or work with the registrars to gain the return.

As a buyer, I assume that domains are verified at the registrar level. Yes it’s wise to do homework but there’s only so much you can do. If @lambo.com unknowingly bought a stolen domain it’s not a crime.

^This is a monster question that the domain community should explore.

The Mods know a whole lot more about the thief than what has been shared here. Don't expect every reported domain to arrive with a resolution. Some remain stolen for years, and are resold long before they are returned - or not.

In this case, the report still stands: it's a domain that was acquired unlawfully and was peddled by a thief that was banned in 2017. Want to acquire a stolen asset while it has been reported? Be my guest.
