I searched everywhere, but couldn't find an answer. Say I buy a good premium registry domain, lets say word.app for $200/year from a domain registrar, with renewal set at same price.
Is there anything to stop the registrar from increasing the renewal price in the future? I read through one of the contracts and it says they reserve the right to increase the price, which doesn't sound too good.
I read somewhere that .com, .org, .net are regulated by ICAAN so their renewal prices cannot be changed? However for all the other new gTLDs, ICAAN doesn't get involved. Is this true?
If that's the case, there doesn't seem to be any value in buying a premium registry domain (not to be confused with buying an aftermarket domain which is expensive upfront but then standard renewal - these are also called premium domains), since the registrar can always increase its renewal price if the domain becomes popular? What about other non-premium domains in any of these new extensions, are we screwed if the registrar decides to increase its renewal price and there is no regulation preventing it?
Can anybody shed more light on this? I hope there is something there that protects us!
