What are your Domaining Strategies,

And which one has proven to be the best and has produced good results for you consistently over the years.

Share your successful Domaining Strategies here in order to help others not to waste money and time on the so many traps that they can fall into in domaining.

I myself am a collector, I mostly hand register domain names that I feel good about and that I might use later on to pursue my interests as a Human Rights and Environmental activist either by developing them directly or by redirecting them to my few active websites. I keep a very small portfolio and although I like to be able to sell a few domains to pay for renewals and new acquisitions, but I mostly like to be able to hang on to my domains.

I consider myself to be the longest lasting newbie in the history of the domain Industry as I am always eager to learn about new Domaining Strategies regardless of whether I use them personally or not.

I recently hand registered:

DomainingStrategies.com (all rights reserved)

Which I might use to compile all the different strategies that have made people successful in domaining.

Thread rules:
All comments must be on topic and must be on the professional, constructive, and respectful side.
Also remember that there are more than one strategy that a person can use to become successful in domaining, you can promote and say good things about your own strategies that have produced good results for you, but don’t put down the strategies that others are following as we like to know about all the different strategies that there are in domaining that people can use to become successful. Also remember that some people might be interested in domaining from an investment point of view and others might be hobbyist or enthusiasts who just enjoy collecting domains and might have other uses and plans for their domains, and some people might be doing domaining for short term profits and others might have long term plans in mind, So be considerate of everyone and don’t discourage others from sharing their domaining strategies just because they might be different than yours, we want to learn from everyone’s experience in order to create a complete reference of the many different strategies in domaining that have produced good results and made people successful in their own way.

When doing a search on google for Domaining Strategies I noticed that this subject has been addressed by many people in the past, I am surprised that DomainingStrategies.com was available for me to hand register a week ago.

Domaining Strategies makes a good title for an ebook, I might use DomainingStrategies.com in the future to compile all the different strategies in domaining in one place. (all rights reserved)

My domain(ing) strategies:
1. Stick to .com (have tried other extensions, not been too successful)
2. Limited hand regs - only for emerging markets/keywords or if something pops up at expireddomains.net that looks like it could be a good business name
3. (Almost) daily search through auctions or new Buy Now names to find something I think I might sell for more than the current price
4. Only buy .com (Oh, did I say that one already?)

My domain(ing) strategies:

Just to clarify that in my opinion there might be a slight difference between "Domain Strategies" and "Domaining Strategies".

Domain Strategies probably is more in line with strategies involved in finding and using the best domain(s) for your business as an end user, which might actually be more eye catching if it is referred to as Brand Strategies,

But Domaining Strategies is related more to what domainers do to become successful in domaining.

Although this is how I think of these terms, others might have a different opinion.

PS: I agree that if you can find good domains in .com then that should be your first choice, but other extensions sure produce a challenge to lesser quality .coms specially if they make good sense and are less expensive.
