I know I'm in no place to say this but imo Apple is wrong in putting AR above VR. almost everyone wants to experience total immersion in the safe space of their homes. but notifications getting bombarded on your face while you're out and about is not that exciting for many people. in the enterprise sector definitely AR will work great. also there will be more regulatory hurdles for AR than for VR.

Turned my VR domain name into an e-commerce site: VRProClub.com
It was just launched last week, but it's already getting increased traffic. So maybe think about developing it into a VR e-commerce site, maybe?

I'm glad you said that as I have herd it before.
So let me take a opportunity to point out some perspective.
1st, you have to let your own personal wishes go away. I want to see the total immersion as well but AR does offer large opportunity as well.
It's just a different experience for different reasons. Or think of it like buying a car or a truck.
They all will get you where you are going but some offer comfort or utility extras. They each have a specific purpose for end results.
Tim Cook and Apple had something very specific in mind when they spoke of AR offering 'more possibilities'.
But they just are not talking about what those are. And we may not see all of them at 'first offering' either.

Apple is going to enter the VR space with a more WMR type device possibly at the end of the year, unless covid has slowed things down for them and it might very well be the case. It is also my belief that their mixed reality device is probably intended for the MAC and we will have to see if it will function with other iDevices in the future.

One thing I can say for apple is that they maintain one of the most secure closed ecosystems on the planet and they make money from it. It is profitable for it. I don't look for anything to change in that regard.
They set a 'better' example for others to follow. Even Microsoft has moved in their direction of methods.

And no, I am not one of their biggest fans. Just trying to show the side you probably are not hearing..

Thanks, but those aren't my personal wishes. I own both vr as well as ar domains. Although not conclusive, things like Youtube comments do give you a sense of how people will perceive things. Most people are like "No I don't want notifications thrown at my retina". AR on the consumer side is still unproven and has only hype to show as of now. VR on the other hand has been continuously on the rise and the forward path of vr is much more clearer.

Well, I think the monetization is the only thing that will bring the tech forward in a mainstream way.
Why else would you invest so much into getting it right. Making money long term.
Sales of any electronics is a short lived proposition from the start. Continuous high re-investment to stay on top of your game, or drop out.

I doubt it will be as bad as those predicted. but it is funny and we all know there will be those that push that envelope where they can get away with it.

It must be useful or nobody would use it.
I think of it as walking down a city street and as you near the hamburger joint,
a pop-up may tell you of a eat special.
Or being in the grand canyon and have ancient/historic sights pointed out to you.
But if they can't monetize it, very little incentive to do it.
Some of it may be a service paid separate. Like having on screen stats of the players of a baseball game as you watch it live on the field. I can see the NBA or NFL doing that.
Most of it will require 5G cell service to do effectively live.

My issue at the present is that I can't see a path for names on what I just spoke about inside of appl, but, it will be those startups providing services and apps that will need a brand. That's a hard nut to crack.
Likely the most popular stuff to do with this device has not been imagined YET !

I don't understand why the VR fitness category has not soared during this pandemic.
https://www.vrfocus.com/2020/07/bla...-eos-fitness-to-bring-vr-workouts-to-members/

I really don't know how many players are still in biz, I should have been keeping track.
I think part of it is 'knowledge of it"
Perhaps the experiences are just not ready for prime time ? I can't say since I have not tried it.

Can anyone point to some of the players that are making headway. I have about half dozen in this namespace.

I'm having decided to develop my VR domain name into an e-commerce site: VRProClub.com ✅ So I'm prepared for those VR consumers, once they get finished with whatever else they're doing during this pandemic... I'm a newbie domainer, so trying out every avenue.

Welcome aboard.
I encourage you to develop. If nothing else, it will be a very good learning experience.
'watch your overhead' is the only advise I leave you with.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Domaining wise, you will find plenty of info in this and a few other threads.
Watch out not to get suck-in to many 'wives tales' (best I know how to describe it this morn).
Folks judge domain value by many things that have no merit.
So, as you have time, read through some of them.
And finally I would say, go watch the drop list.
Learn from others mistakes from it and possibility discover a gem.

That is cool but...
It does not mean that even 10% of those 1.3B people can afford them if they find a need/want.
Just pointing out why some of this stuff does not move.
Honestly, I remember a article just a little while ago, but nothing stood out to me on them.
Do you have a link to where you got that info ?

Announced it in the fuckin AGM! Imp fact: the biggest minority stakeholder in Reliance is Facebook :)
Although the quality will be mediocre imo, but most importantly this will spur others to hasten their "glasses" launch.

I have been reminded by one of the newer frequents to this thread that discussions of the tech perhaps are not appropriate for this thread.

For those of you that have been here the last 4 years know I am always trying to keep your passion for the tech separated from the passion for your names.

But for everyone, it is the success for the tech that brings success for the names.
In some ways, at least in it's infancy, they are reliant together.

This thread has been a bit of a dumping grounds for those that bring non-appropriate discussions in other threads by the mods as some of you know all to well.

If that offends those that want a more purest discussion, you may want to join one of those purist threads and possibly be bumped back here if it does not match precisely the topic of the thread.

This is indeed a topic of names for all the new visual tech's and the tech is part of the discussion.
Without the tech and it's direction, we have no direction for names for it.

It started by being bumped off a VR thread because of a discussion of 'merged reality' which is now defunct.
But the thread continues. See page 1

I thought it was pretty good odds that Oculus was about to replace/revise the RIFT HMD....
But I didn't know if covid was going to delay everything...

Production Bumps
https://www.tweaktown.com/news/73801/new-oculus-vr-headset-entering-production-soon/index.html

Here is to the hope this xmas any/all of them fly off the shelf. We have waited long enough don't you think.
am excited about this on the hardware side and fb horizons on the software side.. its a direct attempt at the OASIS.. you have to give 10/10 for ambition!

I really think eSports is VR Gaming's hit
A interesting article.
Can VR esports become a reality?
https://www.ibc.org/trends/vr-and-esports-the-growth-of-a-plucky-niche/6294.article

I hold a few for this. It did catch me off guard a few/5 years ago. It may be 3 or more before we see real growth/demand in names for it. If you have been a avid gamer, I'll bet you can be creative and pick a couple of brandables yet. Think big media/network. I got away from any gaming in the mid 90's.

Also a good recent read on NAMES and COVID from the DNJ

Microsoft Flight Simulator Is Adding VR Support This Year
https://www.pcmag.com/news/microsoft-flight-simulator-is-adding-vr-support-this-year

That might not seem as big as it really is. I will be in line for it when other HMD's are supported.
This should sell quite a few HMD's when available for the model.

Hey, that's great news on the native support front!

I stupidly dropped the domain 360/ flight/ a while back.

I've kept the 360/ pilot/ & 360/ simulator/ coms

Ya know...
The fact that MS has been doing this program so long... I think they bought it from someone in the early 90's, and they have done so well with realism, and they are so big, nobody really competes with them on this level.
The reason I mention this is the names.
You need someone, even a startup to try. And considering the move to VR, it may just come about.
But I will enjoy the program anyway as I have since the DOS days.

I remember those days!

I ran an old DOS version and I'm not sure if it was MS branded - with a yellow Cessna.

I was using a Forte VFX-1 VR headset, running on a 386mhz DX-33 with 8 or 16mb ram. It connected via a huge extended ISA graphics board with a whopping 1 or 2mb ram. I remember it wasn't a native setup because there were jumper-pins to fiddle with, hacks to install, and special dos commands to run before playing it.

It was a blast, except for the eye strain because the resolution was quite low at 263 × 230 per eye with 256 colours. [wikilink to VFX1]

I keep seeing these news clips on VR/Oculus and the NBA

Could it be that Basketball will be the first widespread VR Sports....
The timing is right for a fair launch this fall.
The boost needed ? I don't think they are truly prepared to present this as we have envisioned but a good start would help it all.
