Swetha from DNGear.com has been on quite a tear in 2020. The extension of choice? .XYZ! 12 of the top 15 reported .xyz sales in 2020 have been made by Swetha. I took some time to ask a few questions on how she got started, and why .xyz? 1) When did you start domain […]

I love seeing the sales. I didn't know the person behind @DNGear was a female. Cool to know.

Hi @equity78
thanks for sharing
I really like ".XYZ" because there are many end users. (example : https://www.awal.xyz/ )
I started to study domains in 2017 and my first sale was "awal.xyz" .
I currently have 30 ".xyz" domains in my portfolio, examples are:
Cargo.xyz
Korean.xyz

@DNGear - Swetha you have a lovely new gTLD portfolio, and I am very glad you are enjoying your domaining journey.

With some of the top keywords you have and very low renewals, I believe this will only get better and better for you in the following years. Congrats! (y)(y)

Congrats on the sales. Most are very good terms that are not that affordable in legacy extensions.

I would still not invest in the extension personally.

In general low reported sales = low overall sales. I doubt .XYZ has any larger % of unreported sales than any other extension.

As of now, I have around 13000 domains, Among them 90% are .xyz. I have only 280 .com domains. I have been renewing around 6000 domains among them.

What is the .XYZ renewal rate? That is an awful lot of registrations and renewals to pay for (and turn a profit) with 55 total sales.

Thanks @bmugford
I have around 250 .xyz sales.Those 55 sales belonged to 2020.

55 sales out of 11,700 .XYZ domains (90% of 13,000) is around a 0.5% STR. Let's assume for a full year the sales will be around 100.

If those sales can carry all the renewals in 2020 and turn a profit more power to you. You must be doing something right.

I can't provide all individual prices. I have sold those 55 for around 100,000 usd.

Well, you guys need to see it in long term view, as an investor shouldn’t just think of earning quick money, actually .xyz is the one that has being more considerable to end users, opposite way to .com that provided very cheap offer, and general and flexible use, the sales would not be significant but the delayed effect would be robust.
In order to compete in competition, .xyz must go cheap in the first year reg fee, I will do the same as it’s a revolutionary task, It’s called “villages surround city” strategy.

She is saying that she made around 100k from those sales, but what is reported are just around 30k, so we don't have any data to say otherwise but as always, you can't trust anybody 100%. Also, we need to consider that some of them were acquired couple of years ago, when was the promo of xyz at $0,1 so you can't replicate that every year. Also lot's of xyz one worders have premium price when you register them, so we don't know the acquisition price. Based on my experience, without knowing all the facts, just checking what words she reported and at what prices, I would say she needs around 8-9 months to cover renewals, and 3 months for profit and new acquisitions, but I could be wrong.
Also, regarding some cctlds not reported, you can believe or not, but in some years I have more sales in some cctlds, than the total number of reported sales in that particular cctld at namebio, so not all tlds are reported equally.

If you suspect things like that you can be suspicious on every extensions sales reports, and how many .com or cctld sellers are successful in the game? At least she finds a unique way trying, and I hope she will be very successful within next 10 years. I am totally agree her point, I thought about .io .co .everyngtlds and I think cctlds are too limited to international usages, I presume some years latter those will likely die like .biz, .bz, .mobi, on the other hand, .xyz has more inclusiveness than others, they can be use everywhere, especially in China most cctlds are not legitimate to gov(surely you need to take for granted that China is one of the biggest contributor in domain industry due to their population), I considered about .online and I really love it but in many countries that the majority people don’t know what’s it means and how to spell it(at least they know xyz is the end of alphabet), ofc too long as an extension, so if I am not eligible as a qualified daily's domainer I will instead consider it for long term investment.

My main thing saying is not that she is not successful, is that you can't replicate today the same strategy, because she acquired most of them at the beginning and sometimes using the $0,1 reg, so it's not the case anymore. Also, what I was saying is not that she is not the 'queen' of 'xyz', just that she has a hard time being the queen, it's not everything pure profit and easy work....you can be the queen of xyz and making just a small profit or smaller than it seems at first glance. Anyway, domaining is an industry where you need to find your own way to be profitable, you can just copy others, so from this point of view she is as original as you can find.

I understand your saying, in my own point of view .xyz domain name still have fairly enough chances by acquiring for mid xxx to low xxxx for future profits(depends on quality), I remember a year ago someone said the same that it’s not too late get starting from now, you don’t have to pursue the $0.1 chances that’ve already gone years ago.
By the way, In my view I hope she can hold avatar.xyz for a while, it’s a good potential one for me.:xf.love:

Looks like your favorite, avatar.xyz it's on the sold list already and it's one of the only few developed. I've checked most of them and only around 6 were developed and 2 wordpress blogs....so they are used mostly by young, under 25 years old, for blogs and revolutionary things like cryptos and stuff...but you can't count on this, if you can't bring lot's of developed and stable companies to use the extension.

Good points and I want to point out Swetha has been nothing but humble, I dubbed her Queen of .xyz with the sales chart dominance, but I don't want anyone to think that she was bragging or anything like that. Queen of .XYZ was my title for the article.

12,000 names is a lot, and 55 sales in 2020 is impressive! Nice writeup — I admit I haven't thought much about .xyz since the initial release, but it's interesting to see that they're being used. Everyone has their specialty and extension of choice, and although they may not be everyone's cup of tea, it shows that great keywords always (or at least usually) sell.
