When I look at some of my sold domain names, it makes me sad that someone who paid whatever sum of money to acquire them is not using the domain name.

I sold a number of domain names in mid-to-high three-figure range on Afternic. When I went to check if they were being used, I see a Sedo page with make offer.

Pains my heart to see that the name is not being used for any purpose.

Do you see your sold domains being used or is it rotting being parked by the buyer or neither?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Absolutely. I don't check often but in about all cases I checked they were developed to a smaller or higher degree.

  • Boxxe(.)com
  • ClickSpider(.)com
  • Lokex(.)com (Was developed but dropped recently)
  • Readmire(.)com
  • Skilledd(.)com
  • Xorix(.)com

  • Tuune(.)com
  • VeriTop(.)com
  • Sensilia(.)com
  • GoCaro(.)com
  • Vallus(.)com
  • Swidget(.)com

Most goes undeveloped.
One of my sold domains is developed and I feel happy to see them growing - Symphony.com

Thanks!

I've sold over 1,000 domains and more than 100 domains are already developed by the current owners, just naming a few.

PerfectWorld.com - A well-known entertainment group in China
Blibli.com - Large e-commerce site in Indonesia
HeavyPeriods.com - Bayer's new website (Big pharmaceutical company)
UserGate.com - Firewall software company (Russia)
HairFree.com - Hair Removal Clinic in Germany
..........

Seems like it's more common for them to go undeveloped. I do have some that have been developed or redirected:

ParkingLotDesign.com
VisualInterpreters.com
FoolMeTwice.com
WashWorld.net
CustomBarnDoors.com
MotorCarrierInsurance.com
ParkourInsurance.com
OrnamentStorage.com
DesignLounge.net
IbizaHouses.com
BicyclePacking.com

A few others that I sold too cheaply to resellers when I was still quite new, but have since been sold and developed:

GameGenic.com
FarmOp.com
InfiniteGold.com

One of my dropped .net names got developed. Another one I dropped due to potential TM issues is listed for sale at about 3K. No way it will sell considering TM issue.

It usually feels good when it's developed because I think it makes one feel that they sold to an end user. Could be psychological, but that's how it feels. If it isn't developed, sometimes it looks like you left money on the table.

Wow. Great that even kept a track of the same.

Your sales are mostly end user sales. Someone purchasing in 4/5 figures and not developing it, looks like a bit odd. Wastage of resources at times. But why would these companies with billions of dollars care!

Ohh wow. And I see a lot of keyword names here. 1000 is a good number.

about 90% undeveloped.
Same. Based on what others are posting, it looks like that is the trend. 90% undeveloped.

Ohh nice. These kind of names usually get developed. Mid to high $$$ names?
FoolMeTwice...I see you sell some names like Mike Mann does :p

I sold one a few years ago that I wish I kept. The next year the dictionary version of it (mine was a shorter, brandable version) sold for close to $1 million.
The owner never used it to my knowledge. He never changed the Whois and left it on auto-renew with no nameservers resolving. I am still getting emails about it coming up for expiration. It's one of the few I checked recently. The others look to be about 50/50 developed / parked / up for sale or nothing there / dropped.

I see my expiration's developed.

I'm happy for them. Took me a while though.

These are really specific small businesses, just who I wish would come and buy more frequently. Nice.

The .com names were all sold for between $800 and $2,500. The .net ones were mid $XXX.

Mike Mann names, but not Mike Mann prices. :)

Omg. But I would say, that happens more or less with everyone. Not in million dollars of course. But in say, having undersold.
Why don't you go ahead and acquire it and possibly sell it to a potential lead later?

Obviously! Expiration developed is a sale lost.

Definitely been working on that :)

Over the years when I checked a month or so after the sale, in almost all cases they were developed. Interestingly, a name I sold back around 2014 (mid $x,xxx) recently came up in GoDaddy Expired Auctions -- so I bought it back. Just one other bidder, so I won it for only $25 (plus renewal fee).

What upsets me is when I see a domain I sold just left to drop either before the first year renewal or in subsequent years. I always think that it is likely that the buyer wasn't up to follow his/her dream when this happens, which is a pity.

At least half I have sold are currently developed. A few of the more recent ones are

Syncfy
Pairzy
Removery

all in king

Low $xxx sales are often acquired by investors who intend to sell for $xxxx. $xxxx sales are less common but tend to be acquired by end users who plan to actually use them. Thus when I see reported sales for five or six figures and the buyer does nothing serious with the domain I am a bit skeptical of the legitimacy of the sale.
