Seems like almost a mythical period for ppl such as me who've just entered.

Was it true that 3 char .coms back then sold for a couple of hundred? lol It's what I heard!

In the early 2000s, you were able to buy LLL.coms from older end-users and flip them for five-figure profit within weeks. I can only dream what the 90s looked like.

I think that as good as the days you mentioned Sam. There were not many sales outlets if any public. Sure there were deals to be had but I don't think they were really domainers more companies. Like TV.com going for $15,000

The good old days are over to my opinion.

You can have one big bang succes to my opinion if you have a good name, patience and luck.

That's the reason i don't post my domains on the forums because than end-user can start-up properly.

I'm not in this business for few thousand dollar. So i register only names that i think they are future proof and also names that i will renew minimum 5 or 10 years or more. I've patience.

Holding for the moment only 2 imo quality .com domains, they're parked and for sale at a marketplace. Sit down and relax! ;)

I'm still holding onto a VR domain registered in 1996.

10-20 years from now, we will all be looking back to this time. Thinking the same thing. The good old days of 2020. Back when VR domains were cheap to buy :xf.wink:

opportunity never stops, think about those bitcoin investors that got involved early on when it was a few pennies a bitcoin. In 50 years from now, what do you think a 3L.com will go for?

The fact that the late 90's were considered a mythical period for .coms, from a domainer's perspective almost 20 years ago.. Well, it's telling on a few different layers.

Highly doubt domain names will be required 50 years from now.

I’ve always said I want to make money on domains, I don’t want domains to make money on me.

What I mean by that is some point in the future domains will become redundant, they still have many years left in them yet, but domains have been around for 30+ years, do they have another 30 years in them? How people connect to the internet is going to change, no doubt about that, it's changed a lot in the last 10 years with smartphones and apps and there will come a time when domain names will go the same way as VHS and cassette tapes.

What people have to see is ‘when’ to cash out and not everyone will, many people will go down with the ship, still holding all these once premium single word domain assets which will go from being worth millions to worthless.

I always think people should always look to the future, when you make a sale, don’t put ALL money you made back into domains, reinvest a bit but always put money away, be one of those who can look back and say “I made money from domains” not “I lost money on domains”.

I do get where you are coming from, because technology changes, but one thing that doesn't is we need addresses, we need to know where to show up in real life and online. Millions of businesses are online, they cannot allow someone else to control their destiny by just using a social media page or Google.

30 years ago someone who considered themselves a technologist and had published a book told me phone numbers would be gone in 2010, they are still here.

I am not saying they cannot become antiquated but we need to know where all these millions of people who want control of their own destiny, personally and professionally will establish themselves.

If there is something new it will be the next goldrush. It will be mid 90's for .coms all over. At least in my opinion.

This part:

I always think people should always look to the future, when you make a sale, don’t put ALL money you made back into domains, reinvest a bit but always put money away, be one of those who can look back and say “I made money from domains” not “I lost money on domains”.

I agree with 100% and have always done that, since I was 6 and started making money I have always been paranoid about holding on too long and getting left with unwanted merchandise. It's why I keep a lean portfolio and don't put the majority of a big sale back into domain names.

Things will be much different than you think from now on, VR is about to bang with .xyz extension, now it’s cheap buying, after 10-20 years would be totally different, considering and thinking as young people and as new domainers, be fear.

As @equity78 mentioned above, there were not many public sales outlets.

I knew of none myself.

If you were a geek working for a computer company it was probably easier, but for most people I think a lot of prime names were probably dropped because the effort involved with finding a buyer outweighed the perceived value of the name.

I purchased a couple because I was a photographer and became interested in the emerging field of digital-graphics. It didn't really cross my mind that the domain names themselves would have the value they have today.

I dropped vrbrowser and vrdirectory because after years of waiting, it just wasn't going anywhere.
I think I may regret that soon :(

:xf.grin:. Who would have thought a virus would come :xf.cry: and mess several things up ? And what about climatechange ? Will Australia still exist or inhabited with all of the fires going on ? Will a comet strike the earth and do lots of damage ? Will there be more wars ? Do you know the answer ?
