How many registries force you to renew for 2 years?

Just went to renew a name I was debating about dropping at Epik which was due for renewal 2 days ago and when I got to the cart it is only allowing me to renew for a minimum of 2 years?

I mean wtf - I do not want to be forced into renewing a domain for a minimum of 2 years, I want the option to renew for 1 year, some domains I renew for 2 years, some 1 but I want the option to decide not be forced into it....

Any other registers that have this policy?

To bloody right, it is a piss take......will be transferring names out of Epik over the next few months....

Their T&C's state.......

"If You fail to renew Your domain name, You agree that Epik.com may, at its sole discretion, renew Your expired domain name on Your behalf. If Epik.com decides to renew Your expired domain name on Your behalf, You may be eligible for a Renewal Grace Period during which time You may reimburse Epik.com for the renewal and keep Your domain name. "

and low and behold in the shopping cart it showing as "Grace Renew Domain"

I think .co.uk used to force you to renew for 2 years back in the old days. It's not the case now though.

So @epik must wait until literally the day after expiry (probably the second after it expires), renew your domain and then you have to buy it off them or they keep the domain? Talk about having their cake and eating it......

Hope they can clarify the exact timings on when they renew our domains....

Not giving my money to a company that resorts to these kind of tactics

This is essentially what every registrar does (renews an expired name and then let's you pay them bk plus a fee or they auction it off) but I'm guessing different registrars give you different lengths of time to renew before they add the charge. Personally I don't see anything wrong there as we shouldn't be letting our names expire in the first place. The 2 year minimum thing is odd though.

It's not odd, it is plain wrong. Who are they to dictate how long I register a domain for?

Was it a standard legacy or a European country code or a new extension? I think a few of the European have a standard thing that they must be renewed 2 weeks prior to expiry.
Just so I understand, the expiry date was a few days prior. Now when you renew they want you to pay double the normal registration, but the expiry period is essentially 2 yr from now?

With the amount of @epik staff on here and the CEO tagged into the conversation I would of expected some kind of response by now....

@Samer ....epik did this to me , charged me a 2 year renewal with no 1 year option on a domain that had been expired for 2 days

Get your tongue out of their backside, you just basically posted that you dont believe what I have said....I like you Samer, you come across as a nice guy, but this Epik sheep mentality is pis***g me off.

I know what I saw and I know what I was forced to pay......their terms and conditions lay it all out...

Pretty sure they are renewing decent keywords for their own profit, why else do this. Can't prove it, but I will not be in this scenario again....

I have never heard of this. I have renewed over 200 names at Epik this week (including a couple expired names) and was never required to do more than one year at a time. Screenshot attached from one I am doing right now.

I talked to Epik support after I read this and this is what they said.

"If a customer want to renew for 1 year , they have to contact support , so that their renew period will be changed from 2 year to 1 year"

"default renewal period for any domain is 2 years. if customer want it to set to 1 year we do."

They asked for my details in order to check the status of my account and I was told by the support guy that he set my account the option to renew any name for 1 year.

Cloudflare? Ohh new player in new field (domain registrar) Cant change Nameservers.

I hear they're a public company too, which offers "transparensy"

The "No change nameservers" thing is a dealbreaker but new entry... #1 DDoS security.

Not quite sure about registrar. So far promising, apparently you have to contact Cloudflare to change NS?
