Google unveiled a new project, a site to rival Pinterest called Keen. The idea came out of Area 120 which is an internal incubator at Google. Keen will be AI powered not to say Pinterest does not also incorporate AI into their websites offerings. When I first read about this two days ago, I thought […]

That seems like a strange choice of names, given its history.

Is this like their 3rd or 4th effort to break into social media? Time will tell if it works, but I don't have a lot of expectation given their history in the area. Also, this raises interesting questions when it comes to "Keen" related trademarks and domains. Google incubates many projects to see what sticks. I think they encourage their engineers to come up with new ideas and projects. This is what it looks like. They may end up transferring the code to their main platform as a new app.

These software companies are saying that programs are AI just to add some pizazz to their products.

If the question is whether they should have chosen a different name because another site exists with the same name but provides a different service then my answer would be no.

Whether keen is a nice name or not... I'm not sure. It could be worse :angelic:

Thanks for sharing @equity78
I guess Google just wants to send more products to killedbygoogle.com , so why bother with a premium name

most names that are not exactly what the product or service is sound bad before its popular.

ebay? airbnb? uber? and many others. Sounds cool now and even hard to imagine how those names aren't amazing for these companies.

If keen fails the name is bad, if it does well the name is great.

“Even if you’re not an expert on a topic, you can start curating a keen and save a few interesting ‘gems’ or links that you find helpful,” says Adams.

'Gems' would have been a nice fit for a pinterest clone

I guess you misunderstood , the domain is not keen it's "staykeen" (staykeen.com) which is not good because there is already keen.com

AirBNB is no good because there is an active site BNB.com?

iStockPhoto.com didn't care to buy StockPhoto.com ? Great story below about the 250k purchase of the stockphoto name

Everything is bad before a site takes off, everything is genius if it works out. This is no different, if it fails chuck it up to the name, bad name, there is a site called keen, Google really dropped the ball on this.... if it does well chuck it up to the name, StayKeen so cool, has a ring to it, wow, amazing, give the buyer a raise.

The Keen psychics know already if staykeen will be a flop, i'm sure for 3.99 a minute they can tell us all.

The thing is that the app is called "keen" but the website is staykeen.com , and since the app is called "keen" and not "staykeen" it will confuse people with keen.com.
If airbnb called their app BNB , I'm sure it will confuse a lot of people and they won't take off the way they did , I believe they would change it after sometime, but they went with "airbnb" from the start.

Nothing wrong with this. If it gains traction they can change the name down the line, try and acquire Keen.com or just "StayKeen" as they are friggin Google.

Best though to never have high expectation of Google regarding their naming. They are called Google, which if you take in isolation (and try to ignore the behemoth they have become), is a pretty poop name.

Don't believe me? Replace the G's to remove any brand connection you have subconsiously built and all the names suck. Zoozle, Coocle, Tootle, Booble, Foofle. Etc.
