So I have a friend who is also a client. This friend wants to register a domain, but looking at the whois information shows the domain has already been registered by dropcatch.com.

The data lookup shows that the domain expired last month and has entered the "redemptionPeriod". The best I can tell, it should enter "pendingDelete" in a couple of weeks. As far as I can tell, the domain is not listed on their website to be bought or auctioned (I combed through the listings alphabetically; I did not type the domain into their search function). Is it possible that it will actually be publicly available again some time next month? And if so, what is the likelihood that I will be able to grab it instead of another drop catch service?

I'd appreciate some advice from someone who is a bit more experienced on this than I am. I am not sure whether we should attempt to go ahead and work with dropcatch.com to try and secure the name at a higher cost or to take our chances and try to get it cheaper but risk someone else grabbing it before us.

Thank you

Tell your friend to bid $59 and hope no one else bids for it.

DropCatch has the highest catch rate, but pray just him who orders

Can I ask name features? (Without giving away)

How many characters? If it's 4L, no shot, expect bidding war

The thing i hate about DropCatch,

If two people backorder the same name, it turns into public auction. Email trusted Nper the name

If it's caught by DropCatch,

it's only a matter of time before they auction it.

Are you asking, when, if at all, they auction the dropped name?

Agree with Samer. When it appears in the about to expire path (4-5 days before actual drop) go to Dropcatch and backorder for $59. You do not pay unless they catch. Good luck.

Samer,

The name is two words together, where the second word is shortened. Think pinkhippo.com, luxurycondo.com, mashedpot.com etc...

Yes, I am asking if there's a chance they will be dropping the name completely. I'm new to this, so I'm sort of learning as I go and from what I could tell they auction domains as "expired" when they really own the registration on it and have 9+ months left. I know that what they mean by expired is that someone else registered it, let it expire and they grabbed it. But in this case it is actually going into deletion from dropcatch.

Thank you

I just wanted to come back to this thread and post an update for anyone who might stumble upon it in the future.

I watched the ICANN WHOIS like a hawk until the domain finally went into pending delete. Dropcatch.com had the domain listed with a countdown timer, so I used that to calculate the exact time & date the option to backorder the domain would expire. With approx. 8 minutes left to go, I placed a backorder for the domain.

Around 2pm ET I went over to my hosting account and tried to purchase the domain every few seconds and kept getting the note that it was unavailable. During this time I received an email from Dropcatch notifying me that they had caught the domain for me. So, that was that, they caught it for me and thankfully there was no public auction.

Thank you to the commenters for the sound advice.

@FreelanceGD for future reference, get such drop catch orders into every drop catch service you can find. Any one of them could catch it. You will only pay the one that does. DropCatch.com is the best but it is not infallible.

Which are the other drop catch services that you use?

There are lots of them - I doubt I've found them all yet. The main ones are dropcatch.com and snapnames.com - there are no less then 4 others advertising on the right column of this page as I type! Do a web search and you'll find several more.
