Ethics of staying quiet when newbies reg rubbish?

I dip in and out of this forum, leave for 9 months, back for 6 etc. Most recently quit domaining and had a change of heart and started to rebuild.

But every time I come back here I see a few newbies hand-registering absolutely turgid rubbish by the hundreds or even thousands.I won't name any names here as it would look like an attack.

I know that some people just won't listen, and I see a few people trying to get them to stop, but these people are undermined by people who 'like' their reg of the day.

Lets be clear here, I'm not talking about 'subjectivity' here, but I'm talking about people registering domains with 3 hypens, or 50 character nonsense domains.

So two questions:

1. Do we have moral obligation to be straight with these newbies and tell them that they are registering rubbish, even if this is a thankless task and the person refuses to listen and even doubles down on what they are doing.

2. Is it ethical for experienced domainers to 'like' posts which seem to validate the newbies selections.

I look at some of these people with thousands of completely unsellable hand regs, and on one hand I do think that they probably play their part in keeping registration and renewal prices down for every domainer as these nonsense domains are part of the ecosystem and generate cash for the registry and registrars, but on the other hand these domainers could be in debt, or blowing money from family savings without their wives knowing.

I find it very difficult to see people spending like $7000 on terrible handregs without saying something.

One particular individual got very angry with me and suggested that he isn't rich enough to get domains from closeout, but a domain from closeout costs what... $25 including one year renewal, and this individual has hundreds and hundreds of hand regs from all sorts of extentions. So if they took their time they could build a decent port of say 100 closeout domains over a period of 12-18 months, that would probably cost them less.

Why do people ignore these newbies and let them waste their money, and more importantly why do some people seem to encourage this really self-destructive and damaging behaviour by pressing 'like' on red-widget8383eu.biz or whatever nonsense they have registered?

Thoughts?

And you only cherry pick the bits that suit your agenda.

There we GO, Once again your misunderstanding the direction and aim of a post . I'm talking about 'Critique' - I do admire your start-out stance ReddStagg. (though I do think your well off-track in your domains)

This has clearly become another 'Head-shaking' thread, again lack of English Comprehension is partly to blame. And apologies from me If I failed to be absolutely clear - I really don't know what else to add.

Grade A/B in A-level English at my end about 45 years ago though.

I really- REALLY have no preset agenda here at NP. I stay up todate with the market, Good Sales monthly, at least $X.XXX per domain but still slagged. I'm out of this thread.

I know it's only from the uneducated (domainers) But I have far better things to do. It's the way the 'Hopefuls' are these days. Nothing to work with (easy to understand) but believe they are reinventing a Pretty much established Market (New MARKETS, The excepted few and far between will always have a profound impact)

@BaileyUK

You liked and agreed with the original post so it is hard to see how there could be any mis-understanding. And now in your latest post you are calling me 'un-educated' and yet you know very little about me. Quite an assumption to make wouldn't you say. If you have far better things to do then maybe you should just go and do them and whilst you're at it add me to your 'Ignore' list and then you won't be troubled by my views any longer.

P.s. There is a hyphen in the word re-inventing. I got that through my education.

Goodbye Friend,

See you later. Take care.

Reddstagg

I wish that you would stay quiet.
Staying quiet would be unethical. If I can stop even a single newbie from listening to your advice it will all be worth it.
Talking of clowns...have you looked in the mirror lately or at you profile picture? Not very professional is it?
Welcome to the internet. This is a forum.

Reddstagg - I don't know what you've misunderstood - Trust me I have tried to be cordial

I do wish you all the best, Please just re-read my previous posts that you seemed to acknowledge and appreciate. I'm going to put this down to your previous insights on being occasionally fragmented in thoughts (I don't always like the way certain variable conditions have a set-right all-encompassing medical wording/acronym) So wont word it as such.

I really do wish you all the best.

Maybe we all have our little crosses to bare for being into domains in the first place.
Lots of love, Ray.

Reddstagg, being a native English speaker you have a wonderful opportunity to replace the income you have lost from your employment and you can do that with hand regs if you aren't scared to put hard work into finding those domains, learning the techniques that you can use to find them.

I came back to domaining one month ago after a two year break, I've closed two sales for $1400 total already, my portfolio is only 47 domains. I did purchase about 10 of those from auctions, which you have said you can't afford to do, but most of the other 37 are hand regs.... including the 2 that I've sold, I'm currently above break even. Both were acquired because I'd already identified the buyer before registering, neither were registered by punching random words into a box and pressing search. They were acquired after hours and hours and hours of painstaking trawling through dropped domain lists.

There is no "long term strategy", there is no "waiting game", the domains you register won't sell. Its that simple.

The only problem is that you aren't prepared to listen and learn, only act defensive and double down on your failing technique. .

But I consider you beyond help to be honest, just because you won't accept this. Let your current domains expire and drop, and in the meantime try and devise a more sensible stategy which is centred around finding domains which you can sell and then actively selling them, not 'collecting' domains which is ridiculous.

I'll share a couple of sales soon, and its very easy to understand why I picked up those domains and why the obvious end user wanted them (or even NEEDED them).

Nice post DomainGist. I think most of us that have been around for a few years (Successfully) realize there's literately No helping those on a downward path

You can only try, Of course these people despise you, They can't help it. You try and give examples - and your called lucky - Give a history - then that's because your old and somehow had an opportunity unavailable today. (partly true but, we took an early risk you'll never understand today)

Losers are losers = because they have to have to somebody to blame in pretty much everything they do. Nothing retrospective for the gain or aid to learning, seems to be a scary mantra today for many.

It's painful but yes, I've noticed I've been slagged probably ten times more for everytime I've been thanked. I don't think it's my wording - when the alternative is being a Bob

Thanks so much for sharing that link on the six stages @Rich I had not read it before. It was written a number of years ago by Michael Berkens, and provides a nice history of the changes in the industry. Do you know if an update with possibly Stage 7 has been written? Perhaps by @equity78 ?

Nice closing to the article:
“Domaining 6.0 and its all about branding; be it a .Com., .Me, .TV, .NYC, .Law, .Music, .Miami, .Poker, .Berlin. .Inc., or hundreds of other extensions.

If a domain is its intuitive and brandable it’s a winner, if not your running uphill against an avalanche of endless domain combinations

The reasons been that all fishes thought they are big fish and that is why shark eat them all.

All domainers must pass through the learning stages and nothing one can do to it unless they pass through the tunnel and graduate.
Learning process leads through thorn and pebbles, falling and risen up makes one a strong and smart walker.

Sorry for my much analogies; but newbies must past through such experience but with logic learning process losses could be limited.

Every profitable domainers have past thorugh the stage, including you, but some are very minimal

Cheers

As a newbie, I just want to make sure I understand all this domain stuff right. If I pay small enough amounts for a large number of domains and then never sell any of them, I can turn a profit on volume?

In addition, I can place as high a monetary value on my collection of domains as I like, as long as I never sell any of them, because actual sales prices would interfere with my estimates of worth? By the same argument, I must not park them anywhere that could generate income because an income stream, or lack thereof, would also interfere with my estimates?

I must say that this sounds simple enough. I was worried it might be a challenge to profit off of domains or to estimate the value of the ones I own.

However, I am a little slow, so perhaps somebody could help me out with a couple things I don't understand. First, from where does the revenue or profit come? Where I do I list my Paypal account information to receive the money, or do I need to use a crypto wallet? (That was a two-part question, sorry.) Second, how do I get other people to accept my estimates of my collection's monetary value, especially when they are mean and claim they don't like the domains much?

One can lead a horse to water...show the horse how to drink the water...quite possibly "cup the water" and place it near the horse's mouth. However, if the horse refuses to drink after explicit instructions have been shown...then the horse is either not thirsty or doesn't believe the advice that is given.

When the horse is thirsty enough...they will either drink or stagger away seeking another pool of water. It's their choice. You've offered guidance and it wasn't accepted. Let the horse be!

To all of you that offer sound wisdom and advice...thank you! Many of us are following you to the water and drinking it!

I am just into my second year as a domain investor so why should I be in a rush to make sales when many experts suggest that it may be more prudent to hold domain names for several years.

Good domains you can hold for several years, ones that have an actual chance of selling. Not the domains you're registering.

You are literally buying domains with dashes in them, that people can hand register without a dash.

Example:

You have Waking-on-Sunshine.com. I can hand reg WakingOnSunshine.com

You are getting new gtlds with dashes in them, like these:

Staying-at-Home.Works
i-love-ibiza .life
woke-the.world

These are horrible names. You should read more, study sales more.

Many thanks for bringing that to my attention. The errors have now been rectified. I now own WakingonSunshine.com and WakinginSunshine.com.

I have a full set of matching pairs now which may increase their value.

Now, I know how much everyone loves facts rather than fiction so here goes:

TVStud.io ...low $xxx offer received and accepted. No further response.

Vodka.Direct ...low $xx offer received and counter offer made to NP Member. Counter offer not accepted.

Reservaroo.com ...low $xx offer made and counter offer issued but not accepted.

3 offers made on horrible names so proves to me there is demand for non-standard domain names. These offers came in whilst the names were parked with not one telephone call made or one e-mail sent. They are in the process of being assessed at Afternic and will be parked there too with make offers.

You like some others only highlight any possible negatives in my portfolio and if you can't see that there are some good names among them please just ask and I will explain it to you.

Or, you could take your advice and give it to someone who asked for it in the first place.

Only history will judge me. Not now. But maybe in time when I've been given a fair crack of the whip.

Someone ridiculed me for owning Wednesdayaroo and sneered that they were going to set up a shop selling Wednesdays. Oh how we laughed. Actually, the owner of Wednesday.com could probably buy your entire portfolio with the small change down the back of his couch.

If I want any advice I will be sure to ask for it.

Until then...I've been Reddstagg. It's been emotional.

I'm still here. I'm still standing.

You can't explain anything to me because you're not getting any sales. Hence the, you should probably read more and study sales comment.

As far as advice on your names. It's a domain forum, when you post something in public, there is a reply button. Sometimes people will use it. When you post in public, you invite that possibility.

Good job Redd....the domainer trashing you and your domains use to do the same to me, but I just quit responding to his demeaning manner. Keep up the good work Fubaroo:xf.wink:

If anyone wants to help newbies, point them to the search bar...

Seriously, this website holds everything anyone would ever want to know about the subject. It's a treasure trove of information, just help yourself.

Asking Colonel Sanders for his secret recipe is futile but if you search the internet, you'll get close.

. But really it was a criticism of people who validate their rubbish picks, not the individuals themselves.

If A poster states I've just registered xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.best and he states he really likes it (he's posted in the appraisal thread) then I wouldn't comment even if I thought it rubbish. Where I draw the line is when a long standing member(s) who should know better try to lead the poster on - with prospects of one-day seeing a big payday. You know the sort - they then go on to list their 30 odd dot best domains as if it is some sort of endorsement. Then I'm going to step in

Sure we have our members who can't stop themselves from posting Positive comments all day long (Chasing Likes) I personally just don't like members leading New-comers on. If both members have been around a while - then they can carry on back-slapping each other to their hearts content, for all I care.

I'm not referring to the middle-of-the-road domains here, I'm referring to the truly abysmal stuff by any reasonable persons standard.

Where I do comment I really do try to be objective - but the next poster is probably going to give those those five examples of sales from the last 5 years as their counter. Sure Saves them having to think about their reply

One more thing to consider is maybe the horse is wise enough to find water for itself having done so all of its life and doesn't need to be led anywhere.

It can make its own decisions whether good or bad and will learn to live with the consequences.

If the horse doesn't want tips, he might want to stop posting in a public forum about his efforts to find water. ;)

I seriously think @Reddstagg and @ThatNameGuy are one and the same. 🤔 If not they should probably be NP BFFs. Seems like we had all these same arguments a few years back with the artist previously known as Bulloney. Just saying.

No definitely NOT the same guy but I see where your coming from. Thatnameguy has been quite magnanimous in admitting his early mistakes (took a while) Still think he's quite a bit off-track even today but like me he's old and a bit Senile. And I've still got another 20 years to get to his age ;) So God-knows what I'd be registering in 20 years
