SnapNames charged me for the domain I just dropped! Forever backorders?

So... This is the very first time I experience this kind of bizarre situation.

Yesterday I received the following email from Snapnames:

"Congratulations on your successful transaction.
We will be processing your payment shortly for whatever.com. You will receive an update from SnapNames within 24 hours when your payment has processed successfully."

*whatever.com is just a dummy name.

The irony here is that it's the domain I just dropped intentionally! :banghead: It was caught for me by Dropcatch a year ago; I tried doing some outbound and eventually decided to not renew this name.

I don't remember whether or not I put a backorder at SnapNames a year ago (I probably did since it was eventually caught), but I'm 100% sure I didn't do it this year. After I got the email, I quickly created a support ticket at Snapnames to cancel the transaction, and by the time I submitted it, my credit card was charged with $79. I could have renewed the domain for $8.50 at NameBright if I wanted :xf.eek:

Lesson learnt! The first thing I did today is I went to my SN account and deleted all past backorders.

If you're like me and don't even know where it should be done from, it's in Pending Orders under the Buyer Dashboard menu.

What's next? I've requested a refund, but I'm pretty sure SN is going to ignore my request as they're probably well covered with their TOS.

AFAIK, NameJet is the only platform that does something similar (moves past backorders to a Wish List). Still, they send notifications when the domain is about to become available again and warn me that I have to remove my bid if I no longer want to participate in an auction.

I feel that it's wrongdoing on the SnapNames side. Thoughts?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I don’t even see how that is a legitimate policy to keep an old backorder alive the following year or anytime beyond an initial request whether it succeeded or failed. Names are changing hands many times and dropped, reregged, etc. Thanks for the info. Never seen this before.

I fully share your logic (y)

SAV also keeps your backorders forever, until deletion.

Never used them and have no plans doing so. They look like a DAN’s clone and I don’t feel they’re trustworthy. In this context, it’s not a surprise they follow bad practices.

@Grilled Care to share what are you disagreeing with? Is it my opinion about SAV? Or do you feel forever backorders are the way to go?

No offense, just curious to hear your thoughts (and validate mine).

Sorry it happened to you. I used snapnames only for high end names I wouldn't mind having for $79 ;)

Regarding SAV, I wouldn't use them because of their $280 listings. Way to compete with investors that you want to buy services from you by selling at damping prices

It’s okay! I’m not going to cry because of lost $79 :xf.wink: But I do find it weird and wrong.

My portfolio is 10 times less than yours (congrats on the 5K threshold!) so I can still afford buying for $79 :xf.grin:

So less is more? Got it )))

Yeah, there are some lessons you learn and just are thankful it wasn't very expensive one. But that name is a sticky one ) Probably will sell for $xxxx this year ;)

Not in your case (y)

So true. I have already deleted 300+ outdated backorders and I’m pretty sure there were lots of crappy names too. So maybe Ive paid $79 to save hundreds :xf.smile:

Let’s see how that one goes this time around. I will post it here if it sells :xf.wink:

Yeah. But notice the irony here.

I would be less pissed if I picked someone else’s drop, not mine!

Is Snap the best (or most successful) backorder service in 2020?

Most successful is Dropcatch, IMO. But if I can justify the $79 cost, I backorder at Snapnames too.

Same thing happened to me. They charged for the domain which I have back-ordered about 4-5 years ago. Name was also very funny unanimis.com
No idea what is this, why I have backorder this domain in the past, and what to do with this.

After arguing for a refund, I have deleted all the domains from my snapnames account that I back-ordered in past.

Same happen to me....

delete your account and credit card info or they will make you pay for ANY back order you placed in the past if that name drops again and they catch it. Happen to me and i was not happy about it and caught me off guard.

There is nobody to argue with :xf.eek: — I haven’t received any response to my support ticket until now.

Same thing happen to me. It was a domain I back ordered last year and not entirely useless.. some click potential hopefully.. what bugs me is I could have got this with dropcatch and saved 20 bucks or even dynadot

Do their customer service respond? Anyone successful with a refund?

Before I managed to correctly guess my password.. I used the forgotten password link which did not end up sending anything to my email anyway..

Yeah, we all make mistakes we just got to be as careful as possible. Once we get a drop we need to take it off all backorders. Also, make sure we take down any domains that are past expiry grace period so we don't get a $99 sale then have to pay $79 redemption.

it’s been a while but if I recall correctly they did respond with something like “you should have cancelled the backorder yourself, now we dgaf” (more politely but same meaning)
