question Thinking about buying expired/dropping domains

Hello,

As the title suggests, I am thinking about buying domains that have expired or are close to expiration. I've been looking mostly at already expired domains with backlinks and alexa ranking. My question is this.

If I purchase a domain with 1k backlinks and 200k alexa ranking, what are my best options in terms of monetization?

Sorry if its such a general question. Just trying my hand in something different instead of hand reg names that have 0 traffic/backlinks/etc.

Figure out your budget.
Stick to it.
Never get sucked into the rush or hype of buying a domain just because you got outbid.

9 times out of 10 you are being outbid by the seller using as separate account.

it's not always the cast but it is a risk at any auction.

You'll see on Namebio sales for domains where you just scratch your head as to who or why they paid so much for such an awful domain that has no use in the real world except for 1 or 2 businesses.

Domaining is addicting. Don't be an addict.

The amount of backlinks doesn't matter in terms of monetization options. The source of the backlinks, the topic of the original site, and the content you put on the new site will impact your monetization options.

The qualify of the backlinks matters endlessly more than the number of them.

A used domain with 1000 spammy backlinks will hold you back more than just starting with a fresh domain.

Yep, Ahrefs is the industry standard for exploring a site's backlink profile but there are plenty of other tools, too. It's just a matter of looking at them yourself, looking for links from recognizable sites, looking at the sites like link to the sites that are linking to your domain, etc. You get a feel for which sites are legitimate and reputable and which ones are spam repositories.

If someone burns a domain with spam, they'll let it drop, so there's a lot of junk when you're digging through "seo domains", but still some gems too.

Someone like @golan will be able to offer better advice than me on this, he also runs a marketplace of SEO domains where he's very upfront about their stats, the history of the domain, etc. It might be worthwhile to let someone more experienced curate the names for you. Golan buys the domains in his marketplace, so that gives me an extra sense of confidence, since he's actually investing in the names before reselling them.

So, monetization is purely a function of traffic and solvent demand. It boils down to the niche you choose, ultimately. All objective (like 1k backlinks) and 3rd party (like 200k alexa, 24+ DA, 15+ DR, etc etc) metrics are not relevant here.

What niche can this domain be used in? What site can be built? What USEFUL info can you give to your visitors there? What kind of informational demand can you cover? What added value can you provide? What information the visitors would be looking for and how to funnel them to the more profitable keyword queries?

Those are the questions.

Of course, quality domain with great thematic backlinks is of tremendous help here. But - merely a help. The times when you would take any good domain, slap a quick site on it, put an Adsense, and start counting moniez - are in the ancient past, unfortunately.

Thank you for the detailed response! It helped me understand better. I was under the impression that just having high backlinks, 200k alexa, etc would be all I need. I need to be able to put useful info on the site instead of just ads/adsense which is what I was planning on doing.

You need to realize this major thing: all metrics are useless. I can give you right now two domains, both with 1k backlinks, and one of them is pure gem and the other one is pure shit. Or two domains, both with 200k Alexa, the same.

All metrics are just useful indicator - whether it's worth to take this domain for investigation, to open Ahrefs, web archive, google index, and to really look at what it is, what site it was, how strong are backlinks and anchor profile. Or it's better to save your time.

So, If I see a recently expired domain with 10M Alexa traffic rank, first created as per whois in 2013 and available for $50 , it can still be a bad deal if there is no work done on getting the traffic to it and no organic traffic can be assumed ?
