Donald Trump's recent anger at Twitter, and the talk of his government potentially closing various social media companies down, would have a monumental ripple effect on the domain industry.

What most of the world missed, hidden in the financial crash of 2008, was that it wasn't just regular businesses that closed because of that crisis. Right around the same time is when Facebook took off at a viral rate the world had never seen before. However, in doing so, it killed thousands upon thousands of smaller niche communities as eyeballs jumped to Facebook where you essentially could keep in touch and keep tabs on anyone and everyone you knew online.

The end result was a death to a lot of nice fun websites run by individuals or small groups. As those websites died over the following couple of years, all those domains were dropped.

While I don't think it's likely it will ever come to Twitter and Facebook closing their doors, given the erratic nature of the current U.S. administration, the probability is not absolute zero. That being said, there's a slightly higher, yet still slim chance that there could be some form of changes coming on the horizon.

Ironically enough, the social media giants like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube (Google) are coming to a crossroads where we as a society need to figure out where to draw the line in terms of how responsible they are for the actual content they "Publish". I deliberately put "Publish" in quotes, because their argument to relinquish responsibility of the content found on their networks, is that they are not the publishers, but that in fact it is their users who are the publishers.

Ultimately whoever is decided to be the actual "publisher", there's the important fact that the platforms have a direct financial benefit from the content. So an argument could be made that they still have responsibility even if they didn't actually create the content. The final answer also need not be one or the other, but in fact, both users and the social platforms could shoulder various forms of responsibility.

In the end, that argument is a rather complex one with more nuances and consequences than most people realise. However, one thing should be clear to all ... which is that if there are closures or strong restriction that are imposed on the big social media platforms, it will be the domain industry that benefits in big way as more and more blogs, community websites and niche groups move to get their own websites where they have far greater control over their content.

It's actually something the online world should be considering regardless as to what is imposed on social media sites in the next months and years, but if the U.S. administration takes drastic action against them, then the positive effect on demand for domains could be extremely quick depending on the specifics.

To all you domain investors out there: Get ready ... Get set ... G...

given the erratic nature of the current U.S. administration
I assume that you're referring to the fact that they actually do something instead of lounging around attempting to appease everyone. (y)

If there was a genuine risk of the big social media giants closing down then there could well be a big shift by a lot of companies back to domains .

On the other hand the void could just be filled by other smaller niche social media companies with the same functionality but built specifically for the different niches, that would be good it might lead to more innovation.

trumpster is a big baby and when someone he can't control disputes his words, then he lashes out like a cry baby
and anybody in his admin who disputes or disagree with him, gets kicked to the curb and disgraced publicly
waaah, fake news, waaaah fake judges, waaah fire the football players for kneeling, :)

but IF
he doesn't get elected, then twit can go back to normal
if, he gets a second term, he will declare himself dictator and president life
and all hell will break loose … seriously!!

That's quite ridiculous. O_o

On the point about being a baby, it seems to me that he's preventing "cry baby-ism" on a mass scale. Everyone seems to have turned into social justice warriors, where they think they have a right not to be offended on these platforms. This environment was created by centralization of discourse on these platforms and the behaviours of the platforms in administering them.

In the main user created content should not be removed because it is "offensive" or contains wrong information. Real life contains offensive content and wrong information - it's just that social media companies seem to think that they can be the arbiters of what people can and can't say and see.

If I want to say "Green is blue" people should be grown enough to make their own judgement, trust who they think is authoritative... they have been allowed for centuries whether what they say is wrong or "offensive".

If you can't listen to both sides then there is no discourse. Just idiots that lap up everything they agree with and try and shut others down because they said something. Life is all about getting things wrong and how people react, it's how we grow and learn.

Let the governments in all countries put stringent restrictions on Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. They are going beyond our control. It seems, if we do not take immediate actions against these social media giants, the day is not far when these three will have full control of our mind and actions. The monopoly should be crushed. favoritism must end. People must be given full right to freedom of expression and actions. There is a big threat for humanity from these three monsters. Let us not become puppets in their hands.
Well said.

If you think deeply about it you will realize that social media is a tool for mass mind control.. for the good of our children we all must prevent them from accessing social networks, and rescue them from unreversible brainwash, do it while you can before it is too late!

For me I am not FB user and will never be, and I will do my best to prevent my children from being slaves to social networks and let them live normal life like we did. I only have Twitter account to promote my domains (so it can be considered a business account not personal account) but I don't care if I wake up on the morning with Twitter, FB, Instagram.. all shut down, to be honest it will be better for humanity and life will become happy again.

You could state that about many aspects of the web. Technology has changed, so even if there was no actual social network sites, it doesn't change the problems. They are still there.

Twitter is owned by a billionaire, who has decided to give some of his wealth because of the virus, as well he has decided to also donate several million to Andrew Yang's Humanity idea, on a universal system. Since silicone valley will change everybody's future.

Social media is nothing, it is the other innovation that will cause serious financial inequality ahead.

I disagree with you. These three companies Facebook, Twitter and YouTube plus several others like Apple, Amazon, SpaceX are the best companies in the world advancing the welfare of human beings making unprecedented technologies ...Technologies and engineering should be encouraged not suppressed

Do not compare the three evils Facebook, Twitter and Youtube with the three the productive things like Apple, Amazon and LinkedIn. The first three are human destroyers and the other three are of immense help to human being, making their life easy and constructive.

Yes, but should they be beyond control? Should they have a monopoly in it's current form or should it be broken up? Does that encourage or discourage innovation?

I'd argue that competition fosters innovation. Sometimes that needs to be forced.

They are not evils....greatest companies ever; how are they human destroyers?

They are not beyond control or in monopoly .....there are plenty of social media competing such as Snapchat and over 1000 social media in China...:)

They may be the biggest and largest and richest companies in the world, but they lack morality, devoid of human dignity. They can mould you thoughts, snatch your rights, compromise your votes, your freedom will be restricted according to their designs and conspiracies. They can decide who should be the President or Prime Minister of a country. You must have read the stories how Facebook was playing with your personal datas. Virtually they are spying on you, every second. I am calling them evils because of their actions. Mass popularity of these monsters is very dangerous to world peace, Tranquility and justice.

I agree that the crisis could lead to more domain sales in terms of volume, but at what average price?
Given that this will no longer be a global health issue but an economic one, will these people have enough money to pay more than 500$ for a domain?

They are providing a network for people to use and to connect remotely especially during this pandemic. They didn’t force you to give them your personal data. They always have a disclaimer how they will use your data. It’s your choice that you decide to share what data with them.

I disagree. I personally met Mark myself. One of the nicest, innovative, and moral person in the world. There is a reason why he is a billionaire and we are not and yet he is so humble.

Yes I agree they do have more say and power. But you can’t complain because they are being rich and successful. Google Alibaba very powerful .....I think calling them evil is a bit much .....you don’t have to use them if you don’t want to

I consider Netflix Hulu the same as YouTube....so you don’t use them?

I consider LinkedIn and Namepros social media too....I use namepros to chat and make friends
They are definitely good companies. Not evil

I did not say LinkedIn and NamePros are social evils. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are world's most adorable demons, devils and destroyers.

I see no difference between Facebook twitter and LinkedIn and Namepros and evening Snapchat

And I see no difference between YouTube and Hulu and Netflix

Don’t see how they are evil....they all are good companies and you have options to use one over the others or not use them at all

It’s little bit much to call such successful companies evil.....if one day you become successful and billionaire, maybe you can do a better social media and you can change what you don’t want to see :)

I wouldn't suggest so, nobody gets wealthy without cutting corners concerning behaviour. He isn't to be trusted. If he had simply made a Myspace, perhaps, with ads that alone, and was half a billionaire instead of a billionaire.

If I had to blame someone it would be the system and not the players. Unfortunately, capitalism allows the worst things that humans are capable of to be expressed (which are often times praised by the general public) :(

Google is a big investor in Snapchat and it is hosted on their infrastructure. LinkedIn, Facebook and Google are banned in China.

Not true. Their software is embedded in to most websites because it is advantageous to website owners due to their near monopoly of search. They use any signals that they want/can to determine who you are, just because they don't know your name doesn't mean that they can't build a picture about you. It is hard not to give them information about you, the sites you visit, what you type, where you click. Every browser has a signature that can be tracked an they're tracking you and making decisions based on the info whether you explicitly provided the information to them to or not.

Humility has literally nothing to do with this conversation. I'd be humble if I stole the idea for Facebook and was by many accounts a nasty bit of work during it's early development into the giant that it is today.

We're talking about companies who can make decisions (like changing the way they display search results, banning people for their opinions) that can make or break entire industries and livelihoods of individuals. That kind of power does need to be controlled whether you think their founder is "humble" or not.

Unfortunately, capitalism allows the worst things that humans are capable of to be expressed (which are often times praised by the general public) :(
That may be so, but capitalism is the best system that anyone has come up with. Despite your objections to "the system", governments do have the ability to control these companies, so all is not lost. The question is how much control.

Google have had to be curbed multiple times due to anti-competitive practices AKA abuse of their position and Facebook for sharing/using information without permission.

That's probably for the best :xf.wink:

Just to confirm, my argument isn't that they are evil, but that they need to be prevented from getting out of control and doing things that stifle innovation by concentrating every possible piece of useful functionality into the control of 3 companies.

Linkin, Facebook and google are banned in China are for political reasons. and Yes this approves my point that there are competitions....

That's how they make money. You can't complain because you are using their browser. They are providing a free service. If one doesn't want to be tracked at all, one doesn't have to use internet at all.

I was responding Haroon's comment on immoral Facebook.....If someone is rich and powerful yet humble, then he is most likely moral and he is the head of the company so they company is most likely moral.
Even one has innovative ideas of Facebook or iPhone etc, doesn't mean one will be successful and rich.....He has tons of investors backed his plan back when he was in college. All things have to fall into right places....and we don't have those....Even if one stole his idea, one won't have the connections.
Even so, there is no reason to call companies evil. As I said, you can open your own social media and beat them if you like...if not, don't use them.

Apple, Amazon & SpaceX are valuable to humanity because they provide technological advances and contribute to the welfare of human beings, on the other hand the world can live without FB, Twitter & Youtube who are just private data stealers/sellers and their contribution is not essential.

Bro almost all consumer-oriented companies take data. Amazon and EBay takes your shopping data online. Every bank takes your spending data. Uber Lyft takes your taxi data. Netflix and Hulu and YouTube are the same takes your videos or movies data. Google takes your search data. Facebook actually also makes virtual reality devices etc

the thing is that you can choose not to use them at all ...but there is no reason to call them evil ....

They collect data but they provide essential services, FB service is not essential especially when you consider the overwhelming negativities of their platform. FB was used to manipulate people and even countries, the series of revolutions in Arabic countries known as Arabic spring were direct result of people manipulation through FB. Trump won the elections because of FB, which was not possible without a platform that is wide spread. If you want to herd people then you need first to gather them in one place, and the biggest place on earth for people gathering is FB. Google collects more data than FB, but at least Google is not a social media that can be used to manipulate the masses.
