The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
While I am overall indifferent to hyphenated domains, with many prominent domains being so high priced if even available for purchase, the hyphenated domain name can serve a purpose in the scope of domain names.

If a buyer is willing to pay a substantive five figure or an impressive six figure amount for a desired name with a hyphen, I say congrats to the buyer and the seller.

That was an interesting compilation of hyphenated domain names and their respective sales prices,
thanks for posting the sales report.

The hyphen works the same as a dot

Eg

- v .

They both separate keywords

But if you use the hyphen between two words in a website address youll need a website address extension on the end

If you use a dot to separate two words in a website address

Eg by using a gtld

Eg word . word

Etc both words are separated by the dot without the need for a .com on the end which is why gtlds are netter than dot coms which is why i reckon we will see a .com domain name crash as more gtlds get bought

After reading @Rob Monster's thread on hyphenated domain sales, I m convinced they surely have the potential, but maybe just a little harder to sell.

thanks

Very interesting. Thanks for the post @equity78.

There were some important takeaways for me here:
  • Only one of the top 10 hyphen sales happened in the past three years.
  • Three of the top four sales were in the .de extension.
  • Half the sales were in the gambling niche.
  • All but one of the names had 13 characters or less (hyphen not included).
I only own two hyphenated names myself, but I can certainly see the potential in them if you're able to secure high quality names.

Newer investors should do their due diligence before going whole hog into buying hyphen names. Special scrutiny needs to be given to ensure that:
  • Keywords used are very strong and generally are in high demand.
  • The keywords appear in the best possible order and tense.
  • All or most better (or similar) quality alternatives are in use by existing businesses.
Good luck all!

There continues to be sales of hyphenated domains, even have a look at the GoDaddy expired auctions there are some bringing in nice $'s.

I first became aware of hyphenated domains back in 2006 when publicly Myrtle-Beach.com sold for $25k and even New-York.info sold for $22k.

I have sold many hand reg. domains ranging from $200 to $800.
hop-shop.com (bought new domain recently)
hop-shop is registered in 20+ other TLDs (with a hyphen) so people are not buying domains with a hyphen in .com but in other TLDs too.

So I think hyphen doesn't matter for a quality domain and highly searched keyword.
