To be fair, the police are just part of the problem. It's a violent country where pop culture glamorizes thugs. And people think the solution every problem must be more laws, more government, more police.

If the police want to act like storm troopers, then they should expect to get shot at, like real storm troopers.

She was on her porch, not likely a violation of curfew. That aside, there are ways to treat citizens, and this is not it. They are acting like violent thugs on a quiet street. Even livestock don't want to be treated this way. And surely, you must doubt yourself when you are quoted favorably by JB. That's a damning endorsement.

99% conviction rate? They can hold you longer without a lawyer?

There you go again, JB, changing the subject to talk about something you know nothing about. What about Japan? What about China? The topic here is USA. If you can accept education (I have seen no evidence of it) we can discuss Japan in another thread.

For the record, the police and so-called justice system in Japan can be very corrupt. But unlike in the US where getting arrested in commonplace, most people never even know anybody who has been arrested. And the police speak politely and virtually never use violence against someone on the street.

Meanwhile, you are defending a country where the average male has a 50/50 chance of being arrested in his lifetime. And where the cops murder people in the street.

If you want to learn (I know you don't) you could try reading the comments from people who live in Japan below the video you linked to.

Why can't I know about it? I have the internet, I can search on stuff, look at videos. Just like you. We've had these past conversations where you don't like the mirror being held up. Because you do a 5 minute Google search and think you understand a complex situation - while I live and work here. You do that all the time. 5 minutes on Google is a far cry from knowing something. I wouldn't dream of spending 5 minutes on Google and then tell Gilsan he's wrong about Madeira. That would be stupid. But I guess you would.

In the case of the 99%, for example, you are unaware that it is very unusual to get arrested, and even more unusual for prosecutors to proceed with charges. They generally only take cases they are sure they can win. That means a lot of guilty people walk free without a trial. Google doesn't tell you that. That's an example of a glaring gap in your knowledge.

Again, this is a thread about America. I can and do criticize Japan, but there is no reason to do so here. You are just seeking to change the subject. The laws are many in Japan, but I would much rather step out of line here than in the US. 9 times out of 10 here, the police will just warn you off. In America, it's a violent arrest and years of trials for the smallest offences.

The problem is, as I said, you are talking about things of which you know nothing - just taking one factoid out of context and thinking you have the full story. So there is really no point in discussing these things with you.

And while we are at it... "In the United States federal court system, the conviction rate rose from approximately 75 percent to approximately 85% between 1972 and 1992.[13] For 2012, the US Department of Justice reported a 93% conviction rate."

And most of those are because of plea bargains, where they force you to confess to a crime or else they'll charge you with something that will put you away for life.

The majority of people I know have never been arrested. We are an open society that teaches individualism and self-reliance.
