To be fair, the police are just part of the problem. It's a violent country where pop culture glamorizes thugs. And people think the solution every problem must be more laws, more government, more police.

If the police want to act like storm troopers, then they should expect to get shot at, like real storm troopers.

So if the police don't do anything you have a problem with it. If they do something you have a problem with it. Real convenient. And what mr-x just said, curfew.

State of emergency. Curfew order not to be outside after 8:00pm

She was on her porch, not likely a violation of curfew. That aside, there are ways to treat citizens, and this is not it. They are acting like violent thugs on a quiet street. Even livestock don't want to be treated this way. And surely, you must doubt yourself when you are quoted favorably by JB. That's a damning endorsement.

Get your head around it, JB. There are shades between black and white, there is reaction and overreaction. If the police act like your masters, then you live in a police state.

Many of the comments in the Tweet defend the police. They are sheep, too.

99% conviction rate? They can hold you longer without a lawyer?

There you go again, JB, changing the subject to talk about something you know nothing about. What about Japan? What about China? The topic here is USA. If you can accept education (I have seen no evidence of it) we can discuss Japan in another thread.

For the record, the police and so-called justice system in Japan can be very corrupt. But unlike in the US where getting arrested in commonplace, most people never even know anybody who has been arrested. And the police speak politely and virtually never use violence against someone on the street.

Meanwhile, you are defending a country where the average male has a 50/50 chance of being arrested in his lifetime. And where the cops murder people in the street.

If you want to learn (I know you don't) you could try reading the comments from people who live in Japan below the video you linked to.

Why can't I know about it? I have the internet, I can search on stuff, look at videos. Just like you. We've had these past conversations where you don't like the mirror being held up. You like to blah blah blah about America all day long, acting as if your country is all good. I hope you stay safe in your police state.

Wow, it's actually true:

99%
Japan has a conviction rate of over 99%, most of which are secured on the back of a confession. Jan 2, 2013

https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=japan+conviction+rate

Seems Americans have more rights. Stay strong, don't step out of line, seems like they like to crack the whip over there.

99% conviction rate

Here is some naked guy attacking cops with a stick. No tazers, no violence, taken down with the use of prongs and numbers.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conviction_rate

Russia - 99.78% conviction rate
Japan - 99.4%

Insane.

"The criminal justice system of Japan has been referred to as a form of "hostage justice"

Well, doesn't that sound pleasant.

Of course they wouldn't have to use tazers if you have a 99%+ conviction rate. You're pretty much fucked if you get arrested.

"Jones agrees with the group of legal professionals petitioning for change that practices such as interrogating suspects without counsel or charge for up to 23 days, not requiring the disclosure of exculpatory evidence, or of relationships between prosecutors and the courts increases the likelihood of convictions; these professionals are unequivocal in their belief in the issue continues despite reforms, and that the system contributes to wrongful conviction:"

Why can't I know about it? I have the internet, I can search on stuff, look at videos. Just like you.

Because you do a 5 minute Google search and think you understand a complex situation - while I live and work here. You do that all the time. 5 minutes on Google is a far cry from knowing something. I wouldn't dream of spending 5 minutes on Google and then tell Gilsan he's wrong about Madeira. That would be stupid. But I guess you would.

In the case of the 99%, for example, you are unaware that it is very unusual to get arrested, and even more unusual for prosecutors to proceed with charges. They generally only take cases they are sure they can win. That means a lot of guilty people walk free without a trial. Google doesn't tell you that. That's an example of a glaring gap in your knowledge.

Seems Americans have more rights. Stay strong, don't step out of line, seems like they like to crack the whip over there.

Again, this is a thread about America. I can and do criticize Japan, but there is no reason to do so here. You are just seeking to change the subject. The laws are many in Japan, but I would much rather step out of line here than in the US. 9 times out of 10 here, the police will just warn you off. In America, it's a violent arrest and years of trials for the smallest offences.

The problem is, as I said, you are talking about things of which you know nothing - just taking one factoid out of context and thinking you have the full story. So there is really no point in discussing these things with you.

Sorry, all these years with your yapping about America and you've been living under that? I think I'll bring this up every time. Holding people for 23 days without council or charge, 99%+ conviction rate.

That's it. Wear your ignorance with pride. Could get you a t-shirt that says "I'm with stupid" with the arrow pointing up.

Yesterday, has a problem with others using those words. Today, uses those words. Because I posted facts.

Somebody is triggered when the mirror gets held up.

And while we are at it... "In the United States federal court system, the conviction rate rose from approximately 75 percent to approximately 85% between 1972 and 1992.[13] For 2012, the US Department of Justice reported a 93% conviction rate."

And most of those are because of plea bargains, where they force you to confess to a crime or else they'll charge you with something that will put you away for life.

And I feel bad about that. You got me.

It's true what they say. Never argue with idiots - they will drag you down to their level and beat you with their experience.

Touché.

"stay in your house". State of emergency because people are rioting, burning the city.

You're in Japan? How many people do you know there would refuse an order from the police during a state of emergency?

Get your head around it, JB. There are shades between black and white, there is reaction and overreaction. If the police act like your masters, then you live in a police state.

But unlike in the US where getting arrested in commonplace,

What makes you think getting arrested is common place?

The majority of people I know have never been arrested. We are an open society that teaches individualism and self-reliance.

In 2018, the Bureau of Justice Statistics reported that among defendants charged with a felony, 68% were convicted (59% of a felony and the remainder of a misdemeanor) with felony conviction rates highest for defendants originally charged with motor vehicle theft (74%), driving-related offenses (73%), murder (70%), burglary (69%), and drug trafficking (67%); and lowest for defendants originally charged with assault (45%).[16]

What do you think?

Unless we learn from our past mistakes, we are doomed to repeat them.

Interesting read:

The religious roots of Trump’s magical thinking on coronavirus

“Nothing is an exchange of ideas or discussion of facts,” D’Antonio said. “Everything is a life or death struggle for the definition of reality. For him, being wrong feels like being obliterated.”

And that’s one reason why the President refuses to accept any criticism or admit to any failure. To do so would puncture his bubble of positivity, not to mention his self-image."
