When you think you've seen enough madness with nGTLDs, Shortdot decided to take the madness to the next level with .cyou.

I know Domainers for who we are. We're still going to send millions of dollars down the toilet registering this even at high registry fee.

I agreed I don't know much about this new extension. Maybe there's something in there that is worth looking into. So, who's going for this? And why?

Imagine the confusion names like these will cause and make .com all the more valuable. I can hear the room of outbound (widget) sales People - saying "no C like in the letter C see not the word See"

Hey!
Slightly worse than .icu lol
I kinda like ICU..HAHAHHAA. I have 1 actually, because I like it and it a site of mine - not an invest. I'm joking of course, I laughed when I saw ICU

The # is wecyou? Does not sound very private.

Also, .SeeYou would be way better.

imo

See it is an IPO...

You can get a lawyer can get extensions approved.

But, as ridiculous as this extension looks and sounds, all it would take is just one reported sale, fake or real, and you'd see Domainers tripping over in a stampede to register anything.cyou.

I wonder which genius came up with the idea for the name. I want to see the faces of everyone in the board room that thought it is a wonderful idea and worth throwing money at...

Out of all possible 4 letter and even 3 letter combos!!!

By the way, who remembers the kinda great chat that existed before skypes, whatsapps etc and was called ICQ? )) It was pronounced as "I seek you" ) You would be assigned a random number and 6 figure numbers were hot commodity. I had one at the time, I think it was 163563 )

That's exactly my thought. And to think someone sat down and drow a business plan with projections and forecasts for this is beyond me. I was thinking what data did they used to draw the business plan, and how much actually does the extension cost to get?

Someone probably left the meeting early and said..."See you in the morning." And the rest they say is history.

Now that I think of it, I can foresee that .cyou will be hugely successful and will take over the king status from .com only to be overtaken immediately after that by .seeu, .cya, .isee, .icy, .see, .feel and others.

It will feel unfair that it set in motion the growth in popularity of the sensory global top level domains (sgTLDs) only to become the victim of it itself, but no one said life is fair and they should have seen it coming. See you when I see you, dear .cyou. Or not.

looking at cyou on Google with Keyword surfer extension it gives the below results for the USA - and no it is not confusing "you" which has 185,000,000 monthly searches

1,000,000 monthly searches
$1.25 CPC

Why these search figures are so high is beyond me, maybe someone can explain......

It is also the ticker symbol for Changyou Limited (CYOU)

Any correlation?

*don't worry I am not going to be regging any .cyou anytime soon

1. 1 million is the search results, not monthly searches. I hope you haven't made any purchases on that ground with any name )))

2. cpc: maybe, because of being an extension? Compare to other extensions. with thousands of registries, they might be bidding for every extension. If all of them have high CPC, it could be that.

I hope you haven't made any purchase base on this? The search volume and CPC means absolutely nothing for an extension. Unless you're talking of buying cyou.com, that would be the only sensible reason to look up search profile for cyou.

)))) I had my IRC channel with hundreds of live chatters at any time. My first development was a site for that community.

This extension had an earlier life as a BRAND domain name for a Chinese gaming company. The extension was bought by the people who run the .icu registry, as a quicker way to get another active domain extension without going through the normal ICANN proposal and delegation route (they did the same with the acquisition of .bond).

Kevin Kopas in a press release describes .cyou this way. They are pushing this as "Change You" more than "See You" if I understand the press correctly. I think they will need some name-recognition early adopters for the idea to take off.
"Since announcing the new .cyou domain extension earlier this year, we've seen a great deal of interest from Gen Z entrepreneurs, influencers, and brands, all looking to push boundaries to achieve their personal and business goals and advance social causes,"

The extension seems strange to me, as many others have posted, but the same group managed to propel .icu to the most registered new extension. I think the meaning of .icu is more obvious, and it also doubles as an acronym for Intensive Care Unit as well as the intended "I See You". The fact that premiums were inexpensively and transparently priced in .icu, for most part, just into 4 tiers, and that all domains in .icu renew at very reasonable standard rates, i.e. no premium renewal, help make it more investor friendly. I have sold a couple .icu at low $$$ but realize that overall there are very few public sales in .icu. I have I think just under 10 names in the extension, and never had many more, at least one of which is intended as possible personal development. I don't have plans to get any .cyou though (of course I said that about .icu at first too :xf.wink:). Seen as change you, .cyou might work, but seems a long shot to me.

It is interesting that cyou.me is currently available to hand register (no I did not take it :xf.grin:). CYOU has been taken in many TLDs I see.

thank you! That makes sense. And I mean why .cyou part, not why they bought it part, that was still a dumb decision.

CYOU made some sense for Changyou. They probably couldn't get changeyou when they were starting or the founders name was Chang, but anyway they grew despite the poor name. Then they fell for the marketing of getting their brand extension. Then realized it was dumb and were looking to liquidate and found someone willing to pay them something for it. Still they should have just liquidated as there is a risk that an extension associated with them will be tainted.

Lime Mitsubishi sold its auto part and then had to buy it back as the buyer was ruining the reputation of Mitsubishi name overall...
