Hi,

I am thinking of opening a forum about a game. I have two beautiful domains.
Which one do you think should I choose?

exampleforum.com or example.net?

So like

Overwatch.net

vs

OverwatchForum.com

...

or Terraria.net

vs

TerrariaForum.com

I like the ones with Forum.com better. It feels a bit more 'seperated' from the actual game, like I could see the devs of the game being more interested in shutting you down if you're using GameName.net as opposed to GamenameForum.com since the Forum in the name is more descriptive of what the site is about and more clearly differentiates it from any official game site, if I'm understanding this correctly.

In any case, you may run into TM issues should they choose to pursuit that, but I'm not a lawyer or anything.

I think you are right.

Example : Minecraft.net is official site of game and there is two forum sites :
minecraftforum.com and minecraftforum.net

I also had a poll on Twitter. Result: xforum got 43 votes, x.net got 23 votes.

x.community ha didn't see that one coming....ok seriously I'm not a big fan of net so I'd go with the com. The "forum" in the name may be a little longer but at least descriptive of what you can expect to find there.

I would never develop a .net without owning the .com also

Example.Net for sure because you get flexibility and future liquidation value if its a one word .net.

Adding suffix to your domain (example: Forum) will certainly boost your rankings in search engines for that the keyword forum up to a certain extent. Bing give more weight-age to keyword in a domain than Google does, but yes, google too boost your ranks upwards if some user searches any keyword/group of keywords + forum in their search query.

Secondly, "forum" is descriptive word itself, and so will attract many users who are really searching for your game AND forum. So here the domain exampleForum.com WINS.

But there is also a drawback, if your forum gains immense popularity and one day you want to re-consider the topic of the site from shifting to "Informative site, or eCommerce site" selling that particular game, then the "forum" suffix will do more harm than good. Here instead of forum you can you suffix as +game in the domain name. Example: pubgForum.com vs pubgGame.com , the game has more potential of reach-out among the masses as it is not restricted to the "forum" target.

So its also depends on your current and future usage of the said domain name.

You can always add a subdomain eg. forum.game.com
It will rank in search, is obviously a forum, while keeping the short name.
