information Forbes Article About Domain Names

Came across an interesting little article in Forbes about domain names being valuable from a few days ago.

It's interesting to read outside the domain blogs, etc. about domain names.

I am not familiar with the author but based on the article, it seems he is a domain broker.

Anyway, thought I would share this..

The article also mentions a group "Forbes Technology Council" and there is a link to see if you qualify. Sounds like some nice connections if you can get in. Maybe someone knows about this.

A direct quote from the article states..."For example, variations of the domain “mystore.com” might be “my-store.com” or “mystore.net.” By acquiring close variations of a domain and selling them all as a package, you ensure the buyer is getting all of the available traffic from the name."

So maybe folks me also registering the hyphenated versions of my domain names isn't necessarily a false economy after all and maybe, just maybe there was some logical rationale to my way of thinking.

I'm not saying I am always right but sometimes I might just be a little bit right.

A quick check shows that..

Walmart owns walmart and wal-mart
Amazon owns Amazon and AMA-zon
Ebay owns ebay and e-bay

I bet there are many others.

Although I totally agree with the above quote, in that case you are not just selling a domain name, but a domain AND a website.

Coincidentally I just watched a TV series called Devils Season 1 Episode 1.

The CEO of a Biotech company was pitching to a crowd of investors after a promo video.

What he said I think would work to sell domains to a business owner.

"We live in a world where Perception is Everything.
You should not only have the appearance of being the best.
You should be the best."

The best companies have the best web addresses.
Mediocre companies have mediocre web addresses.

You are right, but only if you do it with your super top premium .coms.
If you register the hyphenated version for every .com you have, and you have a good amount of .coms... your renewals will simply cost you double price (one for the normal .com and other for the hyphenated version), and that could be a quite important amount at the end of the year.
But if you can afford and like to have the double version for every of your domains... just do it

And the gran-daddy of them all: coca-cola.com which has the unhyphened forwarded to it. Hardly indicative of hyphened popularity, imo. Is it? I mean they are a international recognized brand around for decades, and the .com is an exact match to their brand/logo.

I've never typed in "e-bay" or "ama-zom", those might be protective reg's is all by respective holders.

Forbes has always been pretty good throughout the years with some DN coverage, but sometimes to me its like going to a Ford dealership for advice on what car to buy.

Personal i like this words from article "the value of a domain name -- the extension (.com, .net, .us, etc.)

"Forbes Technology Council" is a paid for contributor program. If you are an expert your industry, you can pay a fee and write for their site.
