HYPHENATED .COM domains are BACK IN FASHION!

Just sold sushi-man.com from an Epik SSL lander for $4200. This is one of Epik's O&O domains. I don't normally report sales but these days we are routinely asking for $10K+ for good hyphen .COM names and seeing sincere engagement.

The great gTLD experiment has been run. I now routinely sell even ccTLD registrants are upgrading from their ccTLD to .COM if they can afford it. I was late to acknowledge it but the risk-reward equation for speculators overwhelmingly favors .COM.

When it comes to hyphenated .COM, SEO is your friend. I recommend to use SSL landers but any SEO lander will probably do the trick to drive inquiries.

Okay, never mind. But I would still like to know the logic behind taking www. Extra-Virgin-Olive-Oil.Online, when ExtraVirginOliveOil.online is available. I think you made a mistake with that one. www. Drone-Mapping.com might be okay. In any event, carry on.

For hyphen domains, I would definitely stick to .COM.

There are some rare keywords that are trending where you could get a domain that is 1st year registration of a few dollars, in a trending keyword combination that is hyphenated.

However, for buy and hold hyphen names where you are patiently waiting for an inbound inquiry, I would definitely stick to .COM.

I perceive this thread to be the CEO of a registrar attempting (and seemingly succeeding) in creating a new gold rush for hyphen domains because said registrar has lost revenue now that they not making money from a gTLD bubble or people speculating on 7 or 8 number domains.

Personally I don't really care if people waste their money throwing cash at Epik for hyphen domains, as those people aren't spending money where I acquire my domains..... I could do without the competition.

But what I do object to is people being dishonest or disingenuous.

The reality is that you are more than twice as likely to sell a .org than a hypen .com, and that was true in 2018, true in 2019, and its still true now. And there is no trend to suggest that this ratio is changing whatsoever, based on namebio statistics.

People would be better off hand regging .org domains, and that would be a terrible idea too.

I've never been an Epik customer so I can't throw around the old "you've lost a customer" line, but I do think this entire thread is a bit of a disgrace. its essentially exploiting the inexperienced to extract cash. You provided no valuable data or insight to support your claim, offered nothing at all to the world of domaining, you've just attempted to create another tulip mania on namepros.

Its short sighted though, they come, they get seriously burnt, and then they never return to domaining. Not something which bothers me, but probably not in the best interests of a registrar over the long term.

Oh no, I only bought all of my domains because the clever man said that I should.

I really should have thought for myself as a grown up adult with my own mind and my own money and my own plan.

Do you really think that the many people who have bought hyphenated domains have lost the ability to think for themselves.

Here's a suggestion for your own hyphenated name..... do-one.com

You don't have to be here. You don't even have to comment. You can however retain the right to have your very own grown up freedom of speech.

The one thing that pis-ses me off the most is people telling other people how they should behave or act. What exactly gives you the qualifications to dictate to a group of professional people from many different walks of life how they should conduct their own business.

I hand register hyphenated low value, low rent domain names as I am poor, without the prospect of ever getting another job. Does that make you feel warm and fuzzy, belittling people who maybe are not as fortunate as yourself and maybe do not have many other options.

Take your sanctimonious attitude and go and do what you do without involving us all in your little dramas.

Give your crystal balls a polish as you can obviously tell the future. So can I. I predict that not many people will like your post.

I've just had my 1,000th like so I guess people can relate to me and my story better than others.

Be at peace with yourself and leave us all to fail in our own way.

That is my freedom.

The OP has a vested interest in seeing you hand register domains. I also have a vested interest in seeing you hand register domains, because that means you aren't bidding against me on Godaddy expiring domain auctions.

You are doing fine and it looks like you have a good diversity of names. I was actually really surprised with the number of reported hyphenated domains that have sold in recent years on NameBio.

I went through a pretty brutal divorce back in 2009 that brought me to my knees financially for several years. During that time period, infrequent domain sales were the only thing keeping me living a semi-normal life. I had about 2,500-3,500 domains at the time, but only about 10 hyphenated names. One of the decent sales I had back then was in-spain.com for $2,875, which was a huge surprise. While I wouldn't focus solely on these domains, the lower competition makes it easy to pick up some common phrases with little competition in the expired lists.

Even Rick has had some good things to say about hyphenated domains at times.
