Registering The Domain Name

During the recent trend in #WFH (Working From Home) caused by the covid-19 pandemic, I took some time to think about how flipping domain names would be affected by the pandemic. I began researching possible domain name solutions that would be valuable to end users in this time. A lot of executives at large companies and other businesses might not be so focused on long term investments. Many persons will focus on short term solutions and adjusting to a “new norm”.

Maybe hand registering suitable domain names and flipping them at prices below $1000 would be a good strategy. So I thought I would give it a try. This unprecedented time is a time for hand registrations rather than higher priced acquisitions. There are trends that will emerge out of this period that only hand registered generic domains will capture.

So I started researching “remote work” in Google and stumbled onto a remote work conference that was planned for April 2020 but had to move online due to travel restrictions. Since the domain name RemoteWorkConference.com was available, I registered it at the domain registrar Epik.com for $7.49. I then listed the name in the Epik Marketplace, Sedo Marketplace and Afternic Marketplace.

OutBound – Flipping Domain Names
After registering the domain name, I reached out to about four (4) organizations that host annual remote work conferences across the world. I engaged with three of the companies via the chat box on their website. One organization, facebook – workplaces, totally ignored me, and the other two had a decent chat with me. For the fourth, I sent a message through the contact form on the website of the company. Here’s how it went:

Company #1

Company #2

So I followed up about twice with Company #2 without getting a solid answer that they would acquire this.

So none of the companies actually said they would buy the name. Now the name has been sold for $799 via buy-it-now at the Sedo marketplace. So I am not certain if any of these companies snagged it or another random person. The important point for me is that it sold and I am grateful for that.

Out-bounding has been the most challenging thing I have ever done in this business. I will regard this as my first outbound sale although I am not sure any of the persons I reached out to actually bought it. I learnt my out-bounding strategy via DomainGraduate.com. Sending emails to companies is ideal but it hasn’t worked out so well for me. The best results for me has been in the chats with either the owners of the companies or the agents.

Conclusion – Flipping Domain Names
I know a lot of domain investors, including myself at times have discriminated against hand registrations and their inherent value. For me, now is the time to hand register. This is the time to capture emerging trends with generic domain name investments. Please drop a comment below if you have any questions on the sale or ask me how you can do this.

Thank you very much for the detail of the two interactions. You have a friendly yet personal style of interaction, so we can all learn from that.

One interesting sidelight is that they got to Sedo via Dofo (@Macit). I think increasingly we will find end users using Dofo to find domain names, not matter where they are for sale, and this is one proof of that.

Congratulations on the rapid turn around, and best wishes for many more.

I was wondering if anyone would make a note of that, that they got it through "Sedo via Dofo". I leave it up to you to notice the nitty gritty details. Thanks for taking the time out to comment here with kind regards.

How did you get around the 60 day mandatory lock?

Nice flip, depending on the name I would prefer to hold until sold for a higher price but this could definitely work for some.

It could be just a promotional thread.

2 affiliate links to Epik, where he works. Link to Domain Graduate, where it makes 0 mention of using contact forms and chat boxes. Then sale was thru "Sedo via Dofo". So he could still be at zero outbound sales.

Maybe a broader discussion on chat boxes/contact forms for sales. Maybe add that to the ebook.

But congrats on sale.

It depends what your goal is. I am not selling low emerging or future trends. I am holding them.
Congrats on the sale. This is pretty typical price for outbound sales.

How did you get around the 60 day mandatory lock?

All I can say is Epik.com makes this possible. There is a date of purchase lock that is applied to prevent transfers, however when a sale happens within the lock period whether within their own marketplace, afternic, sedo or others, they try to facilitate an account to account push after 30 days or so upon customer request.

What happens is; Sedo holds a transfer account inside of Epik and has me the seller push the domain to their transfer account at Epik. Once they have a hold of the domain name, they release the funds to me and make the domain name available to the buyer. The buyer however has to keep the domain within Epik until the 60 day registrar lock period is up. So when the lock period has ended, the new owner can transfer out. In the mean time they can point the domain name to wherever they would like.

Sedo has it documented here:

I am leaning towards this too, it might not have been anyone that I contacted.

Foisting affiliate links without disclosure, not cool man. Not on Namepros

For those who are mentioning affiliate links. It is not of great value to me as a staff member. If there is any earnings at all, it is used to assist other domainers in my territory who may need help. I have discussed that with my boss.

I also use this to track the activity from this feed within my account dashboard.

That's full disclosure.

I am leaning towards this too, it might not have been anyone that I contacted.

time ago i contacted few companies to sell a domain name..
that name was on sedo too for an higher price.

After few weeks one of the companies that had been contacted by me purchased the domain name on sedo despite they never replied to me and they also paid more.
I'm sure it was one of the company i contacted because they forwarded it to their main site in first instance.
from email tracking i saw they were opening my emails multiple times so I think they received my email and it had been forwarded among their company but maybe they never replied because they were not trusting me.
up to them to pay more :)

That's a good point. If there is no reply or maybe a negative reply a BIN price on a landing page and distributed within marketplaces will solve the issue.

Can you share what kind of email tracking system you use for outbounding?

And i completely agree with you that there will be emerging trends due to covid 19, both short and longer lasting trends.
