I was participating in an auction and did not receive an alert when someone posted BIN, not a big deal but it has happened in the past where higher bids have been placed and I have not received alerts

I had to find the OP's last post via my alerts and click on the "auction" tab to see what stage the auction was at....saw it had sold at BIN and ruefully shook my head.....

It is not the end of the world as I regularly check in on auctions I'm involved but why don't I get the alerts? Is there a way of guaranteeing I get them?

I have tried following a normal thread, with and without email notifications and I get a few emails and alerts and then it stops.......Is there a level of activity or post ratio you have to maintain on the thread to keep getting thread alerts?

Just curious.......

It's been like this for ages. Something I've been annoyed with as well. When I subscribe to a certain thread, I expect to be notified when there's a new post. This only happens for a little while and then it stops. If you revisit the thread however, it looks like the notifications continues, for a while.

You only receive an alert if you have no unread posts in a thread when a reply is posted. Once you receive an alert for a thread, you have to visit the final page of the thread before you will receive additional notifications.

Thanks Paul,

So that is why when you go to a thread you have not read in a while it takes you to the last page you visited and not the current page?.....Does this mean every time you get an alert you have to view to it to keep getting them?

Is there a way to just keep getting alerts without visiting the thread every time? Or would that require to much work?

It brings you to the last unread post, which corresponds to the post for which you received an alert. The idea is that you would typically want to read everything you missed. If that's not what you want to do, you can always mark the thread as read or skip to the last page.

It's something that's been requested several times. I don't think it would be too much work, but there might be logistical issues. We already send hundreds of thousands of notification emails each month; increasing that number shouldn't be too much of a problem, but we'd definitely need to test it first and do some math. Also, we don't want to be sending tons of emails to people who aren't interested in them.

I suppose if you have agreed to email alerts you have already expressed an interest in that topic/thread and have given consent to receiving them... it is very simple to turn it off if you are feeling overwhelmed or under email siege...

I think the need of alerts when it comes to auctions/sales is more important than in regular discussion threads.

Probably the solution is to use a separate platform/system/plugin for auctions.. but that would use more resources.

I don't think resources would be too much of a concern here; this would probably be easy to implement, though we would have to do the numbers first. I'm more concerned about surprising people with a load of emails. We may already have an open ticket for this with design plans; I'll have to check. @Mod Team Echo or @Mod Team Bravo might remember.

Hello,

Alerts will be improved over time to help with issues like this, so if you have any additional suggestions on how you'd like alerts to work, please let us know in this thread.

Thanks.

Suggestion - Is it possible to designate how often one wishes to receive an alert. For example if it is for a topic where I only have a mild interest I might want to only view the thread once per day. However, if I were entered into an auction it may be more beneficial to state that I wish to receive alerts every time there is a new bid, every 2- 4 hours or indeed once per day etc etc.

Not yet, but that's an excellent idea. :)
