I just saw this Sedo sale on Namebio. WeSellUsedCars.com sold for $10,000. This is a 4 word domain name that sold for $10,000.

What is the logic behind such a hefty price? Who buys such domains?

Yeh, you are correct. There are other tons of domains selling daily with high prices . I am sure they have plans before buying.

most of them unused or under privacy.

I like the domain. 10K, not sure but definitely something you could build a great brand around.

Criticism is healthy but I do trust Sedo sales. They are an established name. End users don't necessarily think "number of characters" like a domainer would. "We sell used cars" is memorable. Now if the owner of WSUC.com was a smart reseller he would immediately contact the new end user and offer his name for a good price along with the smart rationale.

As I like to say, we live in a smartphone world and the easier to type the less barrier for visitors to access. Further hailing the .COM king is the easy access .COM button on most phones turning 4 keystrokes into 1. :xf.wink::xf.wink:

I agree with a lot but don't think wsuc is better than wesellusedcars. Wsuc has no branding value whatsoever. Wesellusedcars is golden given the right marketing.

I think that GoDaddy is growing its already vast empire. Unless I reason to think otherwise, Godaddy wants to be in good tune with domainers as GD knows how much $$$$ they get from us.

On another note, I am trying Godaddy Brokerage service for a name I personally want for my business. I could try to contact the current owner, but I simply don't want to so I'll let Godaddy do the dirty work. Plus I'm testing out their service.

For clarity, I mean that the new owner should own WSUC in addition to their 10k acquisition of WeSellUsedCars. I actually do like their new domain. I have heard commission numbers from how much car salesmen make and its a pretty nice number.

As a domainer, I agree. But the real question is, is it worth the money for them? I highly doubt it. People are not gonna type in an abbreviation, or search for it. Domain length doesn't matter that much as your browser will remember what you typed in before and autofill your search.

Abbreviations are faceless, impersonal. Something you want to avoid if you're running an independent, privately owned, business.

Probably if I needed a banner, I would pick the name people know me by. Not just any name. Similarly, I repeat, as for my future startup (planning), I would pick up a name that suits my taste (and pay a bomb for it, burning my investor's funds, assuming I get investors XD) not just some crazy trends, it maybe way too long but I need it to appeal to my niche, and people in the network.

Again:Brand is an identity, you can't swap it for another. You can't rebrand WeSellUsedCars assuming it already is an established business id as SellUsedCars or, UsedCars if you are too particular about your brand image. Imagine clients referring to you as WeSellUsedCars, would be easier for them to type in the same, more memorable. Guess, it's simple logic.

But you may however buy UsedCars.com or, wsuc.com and redirect it to the former for shortlinking and not as main page.

nice catch

opencannabisproject.org 3,273 USD 4-8-2020

still baffles me most O_o

This is the reason.
That domain has an AMAZING baklinks profile.
Links from rollingstone.com wired.com hightimes.com and TONS of high quality niche related links.
Plus a DA of 34.
This domain is a monster and can easily rank in an ultra competitive niche like cannabis.
An impossible niche to rank only with "good names" / EMD.
In 2020 there are other factors that make a domain valuable.
This domain is an example.
And to be honest, recently, I've seen a lot.

Hi

per your question below

What is the logic behind such a hefty price? Who buys such domains?

member @h2o gave the most precise answer

End users don't necessarily think "number of characters" like a domainer would. "We sell used cars" is memorable

you can validity in that reply, because the domain was previously used as a car locator site in 2003

imo...

The way to launder the money was to sell the trade ins for $1 to another dealer or wholesaler and lower the tax on new car now it is buy a domain.

They can use the abbreviation where long domain name is least favorable, e.g. company email addresses, linking to the company website from social media.

I used to think unused domains are fake sales too.

Two years ago I sold a .org domain for almost 20K, and until now (2020) the domain redirects to DAN’s ‘domain has been sold’ lander, i.e. name servers never changed.

It was a negotiated sale and I had some conversations with the buyer after the deal was done. He mentioned they develop and sell websites and domains too.

Once I found his business email address (when pushed the domain to his GD account), I tracked him down and found a couple of websites, one of which looked like a domain name marketplace from 2000’s (its design was really dated). So I was like, ok, the guy appears to be a smarter domainer who will resell the domain for profit.

One year later and the domain hasn’t been listed anywhere. Whois is under privacy. And still redirects to DAN. There is simply no way to contact the buyer and buy the domain from him. WTF? What kind of domainer would do that? I reached out to the buyer out of curiosity and he told me he’s been distracted by other stuff, but they still have plans for the domain.

By all means this sale looks shady when you don’t know the details. But it’s 100% legit.
