Here's my question..what is the value of domain hack? I've seen some good domain hack and i was wondering about the value of it. I myself own one and i'm not sure whether or not i should get more. I haven't seen any sale of domain hack. Why do we register domain hack? Is it because the domain looks cool or because there's a potential end user who's willing to buy such domain?

Shameless on-topic plug.

Happy to announce the launch of Nami.ng!

Decided to track all the short single-word domain hacks currently in business use. It's still in early stages, so I invite everyone to share active sites!

Great effort Alexej! We are redirecting DomainHacks to Naming for the time being so it's easier to find for the wider public.

Thanks Max! Really appreciate it, will hopefully grow, and the Domain Hacks recognition in public will grow as well!

As far as I know, "Advice" is an uncountable noun - there is no plural form. So from that perspective, the word isn't grammatically nor functionally correct -> no value

Good morning from a very proud domain hack owner.

What are your long term plans for your website?

Will you be developing it as a platform for those that own hacks can showcase and possibly sell their domain names?

I think it has great potential for the future.

Good luck with your venture.

Hi!

Thanks for the kind words and your support.

As it stands, the motivation is to develop this site into a one-stop place to go to for anything related to Domain Hacks - that will, in the future include a space for people to showcase their domain hacks for sale.

The way I see it, showcase is only as beneficial to people as the amount of eyeballs they could reach via the site, so the main goal for the short term is to grow and improve the visibility to the domaining, and the outside world.

I'll keep everyone updated on the progress!

Cheers,

Al

If you guys really want the "Domain Hacks" market to increase, then choose a new name.

I am serious. I talk to business people all day and on the few occasions I've brought it up, the word association of "DOMAIN + HACK" is incredibly negative, especially with a massive increase in social engineering and technical hacks taking place.

I asked one friend what he thought a Domain Hack was and he said, "it's when you hack a domain, right", and that's the logical interpretation.

That was true 10 years ago but not anymore at least not for tech companies. As for the rest who cares? Are life hacks negative? People use it all the time.
If you don't like "domain hacks" just use branded short domains as popularized by Bitly.

The people I deal with every day are FINANCE-related and if you don't care about that market, then good luck with that. You'll need it.

And "life hack"? Please. No one is hacking people (yet) and accurate corollaries to Domain Hack would be Bank Hack, Account Hack, Corporate Hack, etc. In the standard business world HACK = BAD/SKETCHY and that's just a reality of life today, and 10 years ago.

I completely agree with @DomainRecap re the wording domain hack being a drawback to these types of domain names.

Yes, I know that hack has lots of positive uses, and that in the last ten years there has been a campaign to take back positive meaning of the word, especially within computer science. Still, I think the majority of business users find the term negative.

With so many years of use, I think that it will be hard to change the term, however.

My preference would be for a term like unified domain name, or possibly the contraction unidot, meaning that the name is a unified combination of what is on both the left and the right of the dot. As such it would encompass both names where the word is split, e.g. movi.es and cases where there are words on both sides like neural.network.

I have sold several domain hacks to Fortune 500. They don't care if I call them domain hacks, branded short domains or whatever. And by the way those people don't hang around domain forums. This is a non issue unless you work in naming and in that case you can come up with whatever name fits your boat.

Domain hacks have a bad rep because of DOMAINERS. That's been my observation for the past 10 years. But keep it that way so we'll have the market for ourselves.

I have sold several domain hacks to Fortune 500. .

At the high-end, you likely sold DOMAINS to Fortune 500 companies, as a lot of the supposed "domain hacks" posted on Namebio were simply valuable 2-4 letters that could *also* be used as a "domain hack".

WI.DE is a great example (as are any 2-letter domains like this) as it already has inherent value as an acronym which far outweighs any value it has as a "domain hack". These are PREMIUM DOMAINS that just happen to spell a word, and I have yet to see many (any?) high-end "domain hack": sales (like 5 figures+) on domains that would be otherwise worthless without the "hack".

If you have a recent list, I would love to see them, as it might change my opinion of their market viability. Otherwise, a lot of sales look like pure happenstance, where a company buys a 2/3-letter premium to use as an acronym, and didn't even care or notice that when combined with the TLD, it completes a word.

I agree that many, especially 2L .de are exactly that.
However, I think there are legitimate 5-figure sales for names that were definitely bought to be used as hacks. E.g. a casino company called twin bought t.win for $22,500 a year or so ago. For sure they wanted twin not T. We don't know the price, but Taco Bell must have paid at least 5-figures for Ta.co that they use in redirection. They definitely paid for taco not TA. Pretty sure Netflix were buying movies and not movi:xf.grin:. There are other examples in my article. It is not that they would be worthless without hack, but they have way higher value with it.

@DomainHacks.com
congrats for your sale of Targ.et !

Do you sold that beautiful name with an outbound or inbound?

Thanks

I am not sure if they have always done this, or if it is something new, but noticed this morning that GD are now including domain hacks, or unified domain names as I prefer to call them :xf.grin:, as part of the suggested alternatives when they are available to register. For example, I was searching on a word ending in time and they gave me these alternatives, the second one of which is a .me unified domain name.
