The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
In 2016, Neustar was acquired for $2.9 billion.

Fast forward to 2020; Godaddy acquired them

“Gd not get Neustar’s DNS, DDoS businesses”
What does this mean?

Konstantinos Zournas writes on OnlineDomain

“Why didn't Godaddy acquire the Uni registry; just registrar, marketplace and portfolio. Maybe godaddy picked what thought is better registry”

Hard to say what this will develop into. It does appear at first glance to be a boost to .us, .co and .biz (among others). They are the largest registrar and would probably promote their product.

We must protect the precious .co's at all costs.

thank goodness I don't invest in those extensions.

Godaddy is a virus.

Pure Vertical deal. Not AT&T big, but still huge.

Was the part of Neustar, Godaddy didnt buy, (DNS, and DDoS businesses) worth anything?

It's when Godaddy buys verisign that I begin to get worried.

Interesting that the largest retailer is now incentivized to steer people away from Verisign and its mammoth product, .com.

Will be interesting to watch this space as there are now two (GoDaddy, Google) public companies who is both a registry and registrar. Both are more invested in extensions beyond .com.

I suspect one of the reasons GoDaddy went out to snatch up Neustar is because they know how strong .co is in the aftermarket.

Some Neustar extensions and their status:

.us (10-year extension until 2029)
Dont pay us gov anything, just collect reg fees

.co
5-year deal, signed 1 day, before this GD deal
Paid Col 7% last .co deal —Now they pay 81%

.biz
100% Owned and operated by Neustar

I don't think they will promote .us or .co or .biz . For me is like they will kill this extensions & promote only .com . I am doubt on advertising banners omn soccer games wthey will say " Be a patriot & reg. a .us" or " Help your country wby reg. a .co " - LOL

Agree.
Neustar give an arm, leg to outbid rest for .co
Last .co deal, Neustar paid 6-7% to Col gov't.
This .co deal, Neustar pays 81% to Col gov.

Since acquired neustar 1 day after the co deal, i think it points to how vital .co was to this.
So you’re probably right.

I have noticed during the month Godaddy now brands itself as Godaddy.co instead of Godaddy.com on credit card statements. Now there is a confirmed reason behind the madness.

Doron - I think you are on to something.

Here was a possible clue:

https://onlinedomain.com/2020/04/06...will-continue-running-the-co-domain-registry/

That was from yesterday.

So until that deal was locked down, the Neustar deal was on the sideline. Once they got the green light, it was off to the races.

Good job connecting those dots. And yes, .CO after-market is remarkably solid.

What if they plan to give it all to .co to challenge the .com?

It will be interesting if GoDaddy just removes premium pricing tag on .co, if they did this I will see it as a direct challenge to verisign .com

Some interesting days ahead in domaining.

There are some folks in here who are known to read a tea leaf or two. ...and are rather savvy with respect to corporate finance. Given the .com price increase ruling (much like the case of .org) what are the odds of a GoDaddy & Versign merger or acquisition?

What would they call themselves?

Or maybe trim the fat?

Is/has .co become the defacto tld after .com or am I reading too much into the comments being made here?
