Lol, my battery is always dying these days. Stupid video calls :)

I hate that people can randomly call you through facebook, especially when you accidentally answer lol, should be a code they have to put that you give them personal for the call to go through.

I registered a handful of .geek domains at Epik. When I registered them, I didn't notice that the .geek domains were different.

After getting some feedback here on NP, I did some research and learned how they work. I still like the .geek domains I registered, however...

One of the names I got was 8.geek. After researching myself, I realized that .geek domains must be 3 characters minimum.

I reached out to Epik. They requested I provide the rule that said that. I simply copied and pasted right from the opennic rules page for .geek.

Took a day or two, but here is the reply I received from Epik about 8.geek:

Hello David,

8.geek has now been deleted and a full refund has been issued to your ISC.

If you have any other questions please do let me know by replying back to this email.

Have a great day :)

Basically, be careful of what you are registering. I think Epik is still working on learning these domains. They didn't know about a basic rule. This needs to improve some. A registrar should know about clear violations of an extension they are selling.

Thanks for sharing. And that's exactly the point. And you're and seasoned domainer. It's easy to fall for it when there so many new TLDs around.

I've been told Epik is working on it. Let's wait and see.

I hope this guy refunds the buyers money and gets the domains pushed back to his Epik account and get refund from them.

Out of curiosity, does anyone have a .o domain registered through Epik that's actually pointing to a website? Some domains have been mentioned here, but as far as I can tell, they're not pointing anywhere.

Not trying to be "that guy", But i am - I don't think but a hand full of people are generally smart enough to actually build a site that supports VPN names, they are complex.

But, they are still good, if you want a secure and protected site. With these names often to get to the actual website one has to give someone a password (phrase, pin etc) in order to get to the frame site to "download" the actual website.

And also, Any errors that was made on behalf of epik, i imagine they will do what needs to be done to fix. As i said, you can't just blame the registrar - you yourself as a seasoned domainer are also at fault.

That's not really what I meant, and they're not VPN names. I'm just curious whether anyone has actually gotten records added. Has anyone assigned NS records, A records, etc.? Could even be a TXT record--just something to prove that the registration actually went through. I don't mean a fully developed website. I'm mostly curious whether Epik is doing everything by hand or is able to automate it.

Same here. That would be quite a step forward for these alts!

you can add Name Servers, Txt records etc - i have done so with .Coin and .Bit names. But that actually means nothing. You can add these ext to epik marketplace, but they can't have an actual parked page unless they have a support ext. "Hosted by there own servers", they are dTLDs (decentralized) same concept.

They're supported by their VPN right? So if you point the A record to their marketplace ip it should be working when you're connected to the VPN.

You're conflating several different concepts here. .o is from OpenNIC; it's not decentralized. It's run by a single person. It uses traditional DNS, so you don't need any special software to make it work; you just have to change your nameservers. .o isn't run by ICANN, so you won't be able to access it through the normal hierarchy.

What I'm asking is whether--and how--the registrar is able to communicate with the registry here. I'm not asking about the viability of the domains or whether they're worth investing in. This is purely a technical question.

Thats a question you have to ask @epik because no one on this thread actually works for the registrar. And None on them are approved by ICANN nor Ran by ICANN

All I'm asking is whether anyone who has purchased a domain has attempted to set any records on their domain.

Typically you register a .o domain by making a pull request directly to the zone file--no need for payment or a registrar. The person who runs .o will then either accept or deny your pull request. If any of Epik's registrations have gone through, they should show up in that git repo.

For example:

Did you register that in February? Someone registered it on Feb 22. If it wasn't you, Epik is probably planning to do everything by hand, and I assume you'll eventually get your money back for that one.

Doing all of this by hand would be a lot of work for $5.

Would .geek be the same thing? So basically epik is taking money for something that is free....

That is nice, NOT

.geek is a non-commercial space. Only natural persons who are OpenNIC members may register .geek domains.

Wow... That is lame, to take money for this... So I was scammed by epik, even if it was just $3.

Doesn't seem to be very active judging by that zone file. I could only find music.o registered in Feb, like you mentioned. All others are not there. The last commit was over a month ago so yeah... it's getting weirder by the minute.

@Rob Monster

Could you please enlighten us? No point in doing a lot of guesswork when you or one of your team could answer all questions :)
