Hi there, I have joined this forum because I'm looking for advice, I have a dot Scot domain and a dot Org domain for the same purpose, but I'm not sure which one to use. It's primarily a news site, and it's for a Scottish based blog. Is it worth keeping the dot Scot or would I be better to use the dot Org domain in terms of getting ranked by google etc? And in terms of it being memorable for returning visitors?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I'd say .org as I've never seen a .Scot in use but maybe it's being used in Scotland.

For ranking it shouldn't matter.

Thanks. I've heard all kinds of rumours here and there that .org domains seem to do pretty well. But it may just be rumours. I think perhaps they look more trustworthy for some reason. In Scotland, the dot Scot domain is not really being used by anyone of note sadly, and it's a gTLD, so doesn't give you a geographic advantage in Google. That's why I'm swaying more towards the dot Org I think.

Scotland is still part of the UK for the moment so a .UK might be better but .SCOT is still a good option. The .ORG really isn't a player in the UK maket as the bulk of the registrations are concentrated in the .UK ccTLD and .COM. The hard part about marketing a .ORG outside the US is that it really isn't seen as a local TLD and thus it would be harder to market a .ORG site as being a Scottish site. You could always redirect the .SCOT domain name to the .ORG website but the main thing to remember is to build your website for your readers rather than Google.

I would go with .org as well. A .org site would appear to have more social proof than a .scot domain for whatever topic you will be covering for your readers - even if that information is solely Scotland specific!

Thanks much appreciated. I'll go with the dot org.

Yeah good point. Thank you. I will probably just direct the .scot to the .org
