I can see a number of these getting picked up - there a few others I'm surprised they accepted the high reserve and can't see selling because of it. What do you think?

I have been experimenting with a new system of direct mail first and email followups while parking the name with Unigregistry or Dan.com on higher value names.

The theory behind this is basically a modified real estate investor strategy. There's tons of real estate "guys" on YouTube and I watch them a lot and listen with Audible and the Bigger Pockets podcasts. A lot of these strategies can be adapted to digital real estate.

Real estate investors don't hammer every nail on the reno, as a domainer I shouldn't be either. I can't build a website to save my life, so I have "the team" provide a lander, escrow, professional negotiation etc.

I compile the sales leads, write the sales copy, do the mailing and the follow up email/LinkedIn and then I have a BIN or a minimum offer with the setting to go to the brokers. I won't mind giving up the commission as I price in USD and the exchange more than covers the cost. Plus I don't pay a lot for these names (occasional 4 figures).

I don't have anything to report at this time - the virus I think is having an impact. I know my mind is not always on the job, I assume the same for others.

BTW I agree with @dtagr that I don't think these are normal times to try to sell a domain name, or even an offer. Other than we need to be patient, and considerate, not sure what other things that might mean. But I feel the same. You read the news, hard to not think that domain names have lesser importance in the big scheme of things.

For example, do you think Canadian buyers are more apt to want a phone contact (as Afternic and Sedo offer), response 24 hr a day (as Afternic/Sedo offer), a payment plan option (as DAN/Epik/NameSilo offer), the GD name recognition, a fancy graphical lander (such as Epik), to see a BIN price without needing to phone or email someone, to feel that the contact is more personalized and Canadian (as I guess DAN profile allow you to do, and of course EFTY), etc. Or are domain buyers, domain buyers, and it is not really different for a German buying a .de, a Chinese buyer for an .app, a US buyer of a com or a Canadian buyer of a .ca?

As a buyer, I want to see a BIN. It saves me so much time as a buyer not needing to call or email to find out at a later time that the price is no good for me. Conversely as a seller it also saves me time negotiating with a $20 offer. I like that it is like buying milk. There's no negotiation, time saved and it qualifies the purchaser.

After looking through a significant number of TBR lists, one thing keeps hitting me week after week:

Too-Cutesy Domains

Plays on words, random letters, hipster homophones or words put together to sound like a word or multi-words (WyldGyrlz.ca), shared letters between two terms (Cannation.ca), etc. that pop up on the drop list week after week, never associated with a business, and more than likely these "inside jokes" are somehow intended as a "can't miss" resale.

Here's a great example from this week: Femineyes.ca

I hardly ever (never?) see these these Too-Cute-For-Their-Own-Good domains sell on .COM and the chances of finding a buyer for a .CA is like getting struck by lightning... twice. Remember, treat .CA like the top 10% of the .COM market.

And... Please... Stop... Being... Cute.

P.S. I just looked and there is actually a tiny makeup spa in Stockport, England using the Femineyes brand, but again, even that would be a hard sell on .COM.

The cutesy domains are too hard to sell because if you're willing to go that route to begin with, its too easy just find some other cutesy alternative.

Is there any way to know or estimate what fraction of expired .ca were domainer held vs held by others? My guess many overly cute ones are not domainers.

In .com some cute names do sell regularly, but with 135 million or so registrations the possibilities are much more registered. As @rlm says that is not true in .ca ( or in other TLD s after ,com really).

Nope, Scrypt.ca is a brandable, and it would need to be KyllirScrypts.ca or Scryptocoin.ca to qualify.

I had lots of inquiries with Uniregistry, but never closed any sales, the brokers would almost spam the interested party, instead of picking up the phone and calling.

Same here. Had a lead come in but for some reason I was never notified. When I saw the history of the "brokers" messages to the buyer, I told the "broker" flat out to stop harassing the buyer.

I reached out to the buyer outside the platform after I pulled all my names and they never responded. I don't want to blame Uni 100% for the lost sale, but they sure didn't help

I have have had a sale on Uniregistry, I have never had a broker inquiry, and I've never had a basic inquiry, and that's in YEARS of using the platform.

Its truly weird.

It's all based on commissions, these guys are going to focus on the domains that they can earn a commission on. If you're asking low $xxxx or less, they aren't going to care much, if at all.

Here's a story for ya: I recently had someone inquire about a .CA, I gave them a price and they said, that's too much, I can buy this other domain for only $300 or whatever it was, can't remember the exact price. So I checked the other domain and sure enough, it was only like $300 _and_ listed on Uni. I had never seen anything listed on Uni with a buy it now price of XXX (or even XXXX for that matter) and I was thinking, shit, I'd buy that. He told me he didn't really want that one anyways, but it was indeed a valid comparison to the one I was selling. So I gave the guy a week, and when he didn't buy it, I did. So then I'm thinking, I wonder if that seller has anything else good in their portfolio at a cheap price? So I tried to find some way to see the rest of this guy's listings and on Uni, there isn't any way. Pretty annoying. So I called up a broker on Uni and said hey, I bought this domain on your platform today, can you tell me what other domains this guy owns as I might be willing to buy more. When I told him the domain I could hear him groan on the other end. He flat out said we don't deal with low priced domains like this... So I don't think he would've helped me at all, except for the fact that he personally knew the seller, which turned out to be another Uni employee. So he didn't want to deal with it, but he had the seller contact me off platform via email, which he did. I didn't end up buying anything else (he didn't really have much else), but I struck up a conversation and it turned out I knew the guy's dad who is a famous domainer.

Anyway, the lesson here is, the brokers at Uni aren't going to help you at all unless there's something in it for them, which I understand. So if you're putting low end domains ($xxxx or less) on Uni, then put a BIN price, or ensure that all inquiries go straight to you and NOT through their brokers.

Oh, and anyone who's inquired prices on Uni before are probably pretty used to seeing prices 10X higher than they thought, so anyone with experience knows its almost useless to even inquire on the Uni platform. Plus they'll relentlessly spam you with follow up messages. Its really not a great platform unless you've got high end domains and are willing to pay their broker commissions.

None of my domains has a BIN, and they all have minimum offers of 299.

I'm sure we all have some that are too cutesy, sometimes it just sounds like a great idea at the moment... I don't mind Scrypt though.

Cutie.ca is taken.
If anyone likes cutey.ca, the less popular spelling of cutie, it's available.
And I did sell Cuties.ca for about 8400 a couple years ago.

Where the heck is everybody - on multiple TBR registrars I am currently in the lead for so many .CA domains that I'll probably need to upgrade my VISA limit to handle these (I'm clean but I use a micro-risk $1K CC for online purchases, then pay it off) all at once.

Is anyone else bidding today or are you all still in bed?

Which domains? I'm guessing it's some of the lower-tier Top Picks I didn't highlight,like Subsidy.ca, as most of these have nice aging to them.
