Hi there Newbie,

I don't start too many threads but I am afraid some newbies feel that I and other experienced members have been lately shooting you down which is not the case we ask questions as it is a good trait to be sceptical here. There has been an influx of newbies joining asking for appraisals. These beginners may have experience buying selling but are new here at Namepros and may not already be under the domain radar.

New members have posted some of their offers which to the experienced seem too good to be true and we quite often just call you out on it we would like to know more to make a better speculation based on information.

Newbies hate to come across as newbies as everyone likes a bit of pride but some big note and generally we can tell experience on first few posts where your coming from. That aside these offers you have that you cannot close are the most common scam known as appraisal the scam. You are here looking for justification and seek the free appraisals here. You think if your domain is worth something you will pay for your appraisal that you have been instructed to buy.

This will turn out to be someone just taking you for everything and anything they can after your appraisal your offers will disappear. This is so common I am starting this thread.
Check similar names sold at dnpric.es and price your domain accordingly. Check both keywords and similar extensions sold to find some pricing indication. You also may price your name based on the keyword value at the marketplace you list in some fair much better than others. Take bot values as someone that left wallet in car and will be back ….

Lately I have seen members that have saved money helped recover lost stolen domains etc be abused by newbies that believe the offer they have is genuine and asking for opinions but not liking the response. I can be truthful I won't sugar coat your third choice and am well aware I have them also. Take care these first few post may just make or break you.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Past sales is the best way to learn how to appraise. Look for similar sales, there always are! Even if you have a $10,000 domain, only the 'enduser' is going to pay that, and they might only pay $100, and $100 might just keep you moving ahead!

Exactly I hear people not taking offers on domains that can cover a year registration on whole portfolio.

The scam gives a defensive stand for newbies as it needed to be pointed out. They believe the flow of offers will change their life any questioning of it is being negative or jealously as they really have the offer.

Much publicity is given to great sales, but the 1000s of domains that are deliberately dropped on daily basis are mostly not given any consideration.

for every sale ask the seller if he is profitable

year wise

on the portfolio

then think about how tempting a 5 fig yearly loss is
when selling a domain for $2K USD

Great post that people need to be aware of. I never fell for this when I started but I did my research and I've learned if it seems too good then something is normally off. Always better to be on the safe side and soak up as much info as possible to build the experience :)

The problem is probably good people are acting like jerks defending their bogus offer just close it if it is so real.

Sometimes the appraisal wont be asked for right away it will only be if you try close the deal. In meantime they will find more domains you own to excite you about.

Good info & it is helpful (especially for those new to NP) to have an understanding of the "crowd" & how to best:
  • 1. interact constructively with,
  • 2. understand that most responses, especially from the real long term-ers here on NP (new accounts beware of), are made to to offer honest feedback & help. regardless of how the message delivery may come off, especially when it may be taken personally - until you know the NP crowd.

Thanks @lock ,
Brian

.Are you still falling for the appraisal scam? Did you get an offer for you to counter or come up with whatever price only to ask for an appraisal it maybe weeks away. Wake up use what ever huge offer you get to renew your portfolio if real. What ever reason you have to reject clearly good money isn't business. I am always one to want used domains to sell for huge money i want everyone to set higher precedence on keywords raise the bar so don't reject perfectly good money. If your deal is real close it then rejoice. Chances are your first sale isn't going to be big money it is more a wake up call but it has happened when they closed.

The appraisal scam is taking on new forms with bitcoins. They get you to set up accounts deposit the money but you cannot withdraw from. Keep topping up your account to try to verify it and get money all fails till your cut off.

from another thread.
I'm a victim of salecrypt.com oilcrypt.com scam. They both are the same site with the same address in UK apparently. So what will happen is that after u accept the price of ur domain and create an account at oilcrypt/ salecrypt, this buyer/ scammer will deposit the amount he mentioned worth in bitcoin to ur account wallet and u will be excited that it is real only to realize that u cant withdraw it which is where the scam comes in. So in ordered to withdraw, the exchange will tell u to make series of btc deposits in small amounts like 0.02, 0.05 btc and even 0.1 btc to "verify" ur account. Each time u make the deposits they ask u to, they will come up with reasons to say why u still can't withdraw ur bitcoins and make deposit more again. I ended up depositing 0.65 btc worth $6,175 USD on 28 October 2019 guess what? they froze my account saying I committed fraud with stolen bitcoins and that I'm using VPN service to access the site which are all bullsh*t. Next thing I know, my account bitcoins have been wiped out, 0 btc.

So basically these scammers deposit btc into ur account to excite u, to make u wanna withdraw them and that's where they lure u in to verify ur account for the withdraw with small deposits here and there and then cut u off.

I keep looking like I am a doubtful argumentative mean person but I am actually saving people money when I am asking certain qualifying questions about your big offers?

the worst is when you get dislike for appraisal.

The scam works so well as it is a play on ego. People think oh NP member doesn't like it but I have professional that wants to buy it so NP can't know anything and they are going to low ball so they can pick it up cheap. No that is what your supposed to think and then happily pay their appraisal and wait for the big day and wait and wait. In mean time insulted anyone that went out of way to help.

The real thing is half if not more of these large offers especially to newbies is a lead up to this scam in some form.

I'd like to see some of your sales lock.

The lists you have aren't that great imho and you say you are experienced. I'd just like to see how your lists marry with sales. It would be a great learning experience.

Experience in my book is about being able to deliver. It's not about hanging around in a space for a few years longer than other people. My sales in the last year have been +$5000, I only started out a year ago, and I messed up with a few sales due to listening to bad advice in here and missed out on about $15k more but it is a learning curve I guess.

So please tell me which sales you have made recently and how you got the customer to bite the hook so to speak.
