Know .co actively put up tender?

Gov't tried to sneak .co to Afilias, but got caught; and Afilias vanished

So were three bidders actively vying fascinating read on intense fight win .co;

This just in the winner is... Neustar!! The same .co operator. was able keep .co.. at a cost.

Andrew Allemann reports
It's a five-year deal. Other terms have changed; Neustar made sacrifices to outbid others;

"Columbia Gov received 6%-7% in previous deal and will now receive 81%"

Great now there will no longer be premiums on any .co domains!

Now that .co ownership situation is resolved

For now, looks .Co is more stable than .Org

worry NeuStar raise $20 renew to make up for Col Gov’t, getting 6-7% last deal --to 81% now

Probably. Better renew any good ones you want to keep for several years now.

The beauty of being 100% .com investor is get 3 years .com renewal for price of 1 year .co.

Repeat; if .com price hike each year thru 2023 it’d still be less than half one year .co today.

and yet Some my .com renewed thru 2029 ;)
See how much that costs for one .co. — wouldnt take one .co if offered to me for free.

Ryan, i can barely afford renew $8.99 .com

Cant wrap my head around .co $20 renewals;
unless taking advantage of .co specials (?) in which case more power to ya, but still noo way.
i dont like being pressured to sell in a year and drop .co after year, after promo year runs out.

hate this extension but admit see .co get sales
if master com —id consider co 1 of 5 other ext

Plato or Plomo type deal, going from 7% revenue share to 81% to Colombia, means mass price increase, and painful renewals.

I let my .co's go a while ago...wish I could say I saw the colo gov wanting more but I didn't...just don't like the extension. At $20 bucks per, it will slowly diminish in worth and regs (except for the logical winner names).

It seems a huge increase in government share, and the concern will be what happens to the already high renewal rates, as noted. Having a 5 year contract at least introduces some certainty, I guess. Also, it depends whether you view Neustar as operating or managing the TLD. Those who provide the technical management, it appears the real costs of that are the order of $1 a domain for a large TLD, so even this arrangement leaves a tiny bit of room. However, if view as overall manager and promoter, then this is a tiny bit of the pie for them.

Does anyone know what fraction the country takes for other country code TLDs with a similar structure.

At least so far sales volume and prices in .co have seemed pretty uniform from year to year
- for example this from my trend look at different extensions shows dollar volume of .co sales vs .cc sales, note different axes scales.

In terms of average prices in NameBio-listed sales, this shows comparison with some other popular general purpose country code. As shown, prices have remained strong, both compared to other country codes and legacy extensions. The registry premium pricing of names dropped may be helping keep prices strong, even though I understand some domainer resentment to the practice too.

Will be interesting to see how .co fares going forward.

Is .ai really doing that bad? Kinda surprised me.

It doesn't have nearly the amount of speculator based domain registrations as .co, given they are paying 75% more of their revenue to sustain the rights, they have to raise prices, many of those speculator domains, especially those promo ones are going to drop like flies now. I can't see end user blowback from paying $50+ per year for renewal, but it's going to make domainers think twice, unless they are getting cheap promos still. I would not want to be holding heavy a deep .co portfolio going into these price hikes.

if u can barely afford com renewal, then why do it for 3 years right away? :)
the name of our game is still to sell asap.. if of course the price is right.
i never understood domainers who renew for years ahead.. unless its liquid mega value names.. like 3l.com or hotel.com ;)

as for .co... well. whether we like it or not, it still gets sales... so mixing emotions into domainers is not good for us :)

try and relax your view of co and it can help you make some nice sales.. there are TONS of .co names you should imo accept for free ;)

there are tons of promo prices that let you reg new .co for basicaly price of one .com
even if u won't renew it for $20-30 later, in many cases those regs can give you better sale chance/prices than .com regs.

cheers

I was surprised when the numbers came out that prices were way down, but I think what it really means is that there are way more domain investors buying .ai, at prices now above $100, so it pulls the average price down. That is at least how I interpreted it. There was somewhat a similar experience with .io, what domainers feel is hot, may have price averages pulled down on NameBio, because the wholesale/retail balance pulls toward wholesale.

Bob

PS the average price for .ai so far in 2020 is $649, up slightly, although that drops to $589 without the huge Think sale. There are definitely a lot of very strong sales, but lots of wholesale acquisitions in low $$$ shift average.

PPS Also important to note that the .ai registry shifted to handling auctioned 'premium' names themselves, and reporting monthly to NameBio, so many more sales being reported than when they earlier auctioned through a third party.

I'd rather pay 8.49 to renew a .com than aquire a new one because I gave up on it, that would be even more expensive unless it doing promo hand regs. It takes time for the right buyer to come along. It usually dosent happen in the first year.

Exactly.

Strive to be authentic; believe what i’m selling-
was against .co— without the $20+ renewal!

Interesting angle. Didn't think of that but sounds like a very good explanation. Thank for the analysis. Although I'm not heavily invested in .co and don't own any .ai at all it's interesting to keep track of that niches as there are opportunities.

Thanks!

It appears that the Columbian government has awakened to the success of the promotion of the .co . Seems risky to invest a lot of branding and development effort towards something that can be altered to fit Columbias desires. And really, they should be allowed to do with the extension almost anything that they please. This same scenario can play out for other ccTLDs (.tv, .ws, .me) which have been like domain hacks.
I have zero .co registrations. No attraction for me, but apparently there is for other folks. I do own several .tv, .ws and .me. Have had them for many years. Minimal offers on a few.

What is the reason for that?

I'm interested why this event correlates with recent GoDaddy's acquisition of Neustar? Was GoDaddy waiting till tender ends?
