information Top Topics: Zapier Acquires Zap.com; Decentralization.com Closes at Just $5,050...

NameSilo
Is automation powerhouse Zapier about to rebrand to Zap? It looks like the company bought Zap.com earlier this year, anyway. According to DomainIQ, the name moved from NameCheap to Name.com under privacy protection in January, with Zap.com now redirecting to Zapier.com. Incidentally, Name.com is the registrar for Zapier.com. I mentioned this sale, along with five other likely deals, on a recent post on my LinkedIn profile.

Here are this week's Top Topics.

Decentralization.com Closed at $5,050

Recently, the Decentralization.com domain expired was caught by DropCatch, and was subsequently auctioned off on their platform. The name attracted a lot of attention but closed at $5,050. Since this is a term synonymous with blockchain technology, which is a trending topic at the moment, many expected this to close higher.

This discussion is all based around investor expectations for the Decentralization.com sales price, with many feeling that the name could have sold for a higher price than it did. What do you think of this sales price?

My Afternic Experience, The March Edition

We seem to be featuring AbdulBasit Makrani almost weekly at the moment, but he is sharing some valuable content that should be highlighted. This time, it's the latest in his series about his Afternic experiment. To recap, in January, AbdulBasit switched nameservers for his vast portfolio from Uniregistry Market to Afternic.

This latest installment gives an update on the sales and offers that have come via Afternic in March. The experiment resulted in four sales this month, which are all noted in this discussion.

Plan For the Future. Protect Your Domain Assets

Director of business development, Mike Robertson, has shared some incredibly valuable advice in the past. For example, I teamed up with Mike to produce a series of articles about how exactly to perform outbound sales on your domain names.

He's an incredible asset to the industry, and he's just released his most recent advice article about protecting your domain assets and planning for the future. As domain investors, it's important to have a contingency plan in place in the event that anything happens to you. This latest article from Mike discusses this in some depth.

What did zap.com sell for? If anything less than $1.5 million it was a mistake by the seller.

But it resold this year from what I’ve seen. Agree that it should be a seven figure sale
Do we know the latest price it sold at?

Zap.com is definitely 7 maybe even 8 figure worthy. A 3 letter dictionary pronounceable is the most satisfying & easiest to type in. IMO.

I hope you regard it within fair comment guidelines, @James Iles if I point out that, in addition to your great picks for worthwhile topics for the week, I think it might be appropriate to also list in the comments on this thread the $200,000 sale at Sedo of shop.app as covered in this thread (as well as another by @illumy that confirmed the end-user via WhoIs).

Why do I think it is worthy of weekly mention?
  • It was the 7th highest sale overall listed on NameBio so far in 2020 (was 6th when thread started)
  • Highest value new gTLD sale so far in 2020, and
  • The buyer is Shopify, a multi-million dollar well-known company.
  • It is the highest sale in NameBio of an .app extension domain ever (yes I do realize various reports of higher sales outside NameBio).
  • It is the 8th highest new extension sale of all time.
  • I believe (not absolutely sure) the most prominent end-user of any of the top 10 all time sales in new extensions.
  • Although @Dave Evanson in a tweet mentioned it before the posting here, I think the story here on NamePros was posted prior to any of the blogs, picking up on the sale (which they all did cover soon after including accurate speculation on likely end-user).
I realize that it is always a tough call to reduce the dozens of worthwhile topics from the week to a few to list in your column, and as I have said many times you do an amazing job(y) with curation of the best topics. Just thought I would point out that I think this one deserved mention too.

I think when household name businesses pay 6 figures for domain names it is important well beyond that sale. There is a trickle down impact as other businesses realize that domain names are truly valuable digital assets essential to success.

As I said, I hope that posting this does not create a string of "my topic should have been listed", but in this case did feel the topic warranted mention as a highlight of the week (there was of course a .com sale at the same price point during the week, too).

Thanks again for the great collection of topics, and the interesting information on the Zap resale. Hopefully we will at some point learn the price this time around, as it will be interesting to compare the prices at two points four years apart

Sincerely,

Bob

Thanks for highlighting that topic, Bob. Input is always welcome. In most cases, I do steer clear of any discussions that have been mentioned or referenced extensively in the blogs. The shop.app sale is certainly noteworthy, though.
