I've sold a couple of domains here and there. $50 here; $50 there. Recently, I sold a domain I had thought up myself, for more than I should have. The buyer contacted me through a GoDaddy broker and offered $150 for it. In hindsight, that number was much, much too low, seeing as they paid $60 some dollars just for the broker fee. They must have really wanted it. The domain name was myceliYum.com. I countered their offer at $350 and the buyer immediately accepted. I think that the domain was clever and there was no particular trademark on it. It could have been used for a whole host of mushroom food products. I wish I could get it back but live and learn I guess.

That's exactly what's known as seller's remorse, but why feel it later than having countered with a much higher offer? If they rejected it would be all good, at least they would have countered with a value they could max afford which could have given you some satisfaction.

Anyways, I think the value you got is not too bad, and congrats you sold it to an end user. I have known many Pros who have never been able to sell their domains to end users and reselling to resellers all the time :P That way, you should see it as an achievement not a cause of remorse, good luck buddy and do let us know when you make the 5 figure sale :) !

In some industries, the mandate is to charge as much as the market will bear.

This is rarely possible in domaining for a couple of reasons:

1. The market for your domain might be just one person. It might be no one. We really have no way of knowing how many potential buyers there are, if any.

2. There is no standardized appraisal formula that the industry agrees on. Which makes domain names illiquid, compared to other valuable assets.

So, our goal is to turn an illiquid asset into cash. To cover your expenses and make a profit, you'd want to make over 10X your investment back on a sale.

If you paid $10 for the name, you got a 35X return. Congrats!!!
