The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Easy, First, best to bring @Michael to explain.

Secondly, it’s still free as can see; I dont pay.

My problem with Michael hasnt been model; he very generous free, and will use namebio to advertise my next auction to support :)

My problem w/ NB is vetting results post-sale.
there has to be a better way to keep track, but regards to sales data: NB best and wish more registrars share sales’ data with him. no comp!
Second-to-none.

It's still free. The payed memberships give you more data including sales below $100.

That's odd, it looks like something might have timed out or otherwise failed to load. Even if there are no results it should still show more than just the table headings:

Do you have JavaScript disabled or something? NameBio is still free with the same 100 results limit per search as we've had for the past 5+ years, although now if you register for free you can get 150 results.

Not sure what happened, but if you PM me your IP address I can try to look into it more.

@Michael thank you for NameBio. And thank you for this popup. I think the guy looks hilarious and it always cheers me up.

As a very light/casual user, I’ve always appreciated Namebio was there to provide a quick comp if I needed it. It makes sense that you’d start to charge, or try to figure out ways to convert folks into paying subscribers. Nothing good is free, really, and it shouldn’t be. Personally, I don’t use it enough to become a subscriber, and I hate being forced to watch ads, so I guess this will turn me into a DNPric.es user.

I will say that this disclaimer:

β€œOr register for free to get 150 results per search.”

makes one assume if you register, the ad goes away. But no, I still have to stay on the page for 45 seconds for it to disappear. So there’s no benefit to β€œregistering for free.”

The benefit to registering for free is getting 150 results per search instead of 100 results for anonymous users. So if you have 10 results per page you can go 15 pages deep in the results instead of 10. That’s 50% more data, not nothing. Not sure where it said you’d get an ad-free experience for registering as a free user or how that could even be inferred.

Sorry to hear that a 45 second ad every 50 searches is too much to bear. As a light user I’d imagine you would see it once or twice a week. Can’t win em all I guess.

Look, Michael, I said I appreciate your service, and I just wanted to share my honest feedback as a casual user. When you implement a feature some will like it some will not, ultimately you're right, you can't win them all.

But my honest feedback is this: yes, to be forced to stay on the page for 45 seconds to watch a static ad is quite disruptive. The only time I can remember being forced to stay on a page to watch an ad has been logging into free airport WiFi - and that's usually a 30 second video, not a 45 second static ad. You can choose to take this however you will, it is not ill-intentioned feedback, I'm just trying to articulate my user experience.

I am hardcore user of namebio. Amazing service. It would be highly appreciated if you reduce the and pop around 10 seconds. 45 are...ehh...too many I think.

Sorry if I took it the wrong way, it might have been the last part that sort of accused our banner of being misleading when I think it was pretty clear. "Subscribe and get these benefits, or join as a free user and get 150 results per search." An ad-free experience isn't even mentioned on the banner despite being a membership benefit. Anyway, noted in case other people find it confusing.

I do appreciate your feedback and I'm sorry to see you go. But at the same time it's hard to hear people saying essentially "I appreciate what you provide, but only if I don't have to pay you anything and you don't do anything to make money that even slightly inconveniences me. If you do, I'm gone." What can I really say to that? As an infrequent user who hates forced ads I can understand your choice. But we need people to pay us directly or we need to sell their attention, and regular banners don't get any attention.

This method of displaying an ad is basically the de facto method used in free mobile apps, I'm just adapting it to the web. Granted those are usually done with videos like you said, so the wait time is slightly less boring. But there aren't many industry companies creating commercials. Plus I personally dislike auto-playing videos, especially because of the audio factor.

I would much prefer to not have ads at all and be entirely supported by members, but we give away too much functionality for free to get decent traction on that. We serve 325,000+ unique users a year performing around 5 million homepage searches, and have a low xxx number of members. We could probably make a lot more money by reducing functionality for free users, that's what Estibot did, but I didn't want to take away power from users who couldn't afford it.

Frankly it's meant to be a little disruptive, otherwise it wouldn't get clicks. We tried for nearly a month with a close button that was there from the start. It performed decently, but most people just closed it right away without even looking at it, so it wasn't good enough to sell. Thus I went down this road to see what would happen and it tripled clicks instantly.

Thanks for the kind words and the feedback. We could decrease the time, but then we'd have to show it more often than every 50 searches to have the same value. That seemed like it would be worse, but if most people would prefer a shorter but more frequent wait I'm open to it. As it stands most people will only see it once every day or two, and a small percentage of users might see it a few times per day tops, so a 10-second timer with that same level of frequency wouldn't be saleable.

If you're a hardcore user you could always pay $60 a year and never see them or any other ads again. I sincerely hope you're getting more than $60 in value out of using our site.

They are bluffing.

There isn't a better option. :)
