Does that ever happen to you? Is there a way to find out if I owned a particular domain previously?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Yes, it happens. In case you still use the same email address, you simply search for the domain in your emails and will be able to find a receipt (or not ;))

yea. one caveat (finally got to use that word! lol)

unless your email got hacked and thieves used it to steal your domain and then erased the domain and any record of it in your inbox. from the receipt of purchase to everything in between.

always best to contact ICANN direct to confirm if you ever owned the domain. (by phone if you live in the USA is best)

It has happened more than one time where I find I had owned domains close to almost same but way worse is when I see domains I did own and have no idea how I lost them advertised on home pages of major marketplaces.

Yes, type the domain into your email search bar...you would have gotten a confirmation email from the domain registrar if you had purchased it.

If you got it through namepros, then there would be some message to prove it.

That has happened to me. I have let names expire to my surprise...didn't even know.
Other times, I just had a closely related name that i confused it with...

or here's a unique scenario.

as with most domainers.

when you find a good keyword your usual MO is to "roll with it" meaning check out what's available to handreg.

then decide to reg a bunch or one by one.

depending on the registrar you use like say @Dynadot that even though the website seems to be saying your transaction is paid for.

in actuality your domain is pending payment and isn't instant. sometimes there's an issue with the credit card.

then you babble about it on the "your reg of the day" thread because you are all excited.

then the reads of that thread will check the whois. and it's unregistered because there was an issue with dynadot. so they reg it and now it's theirs not yours.

(why is it like this over at Dynadot? why is it after you pay it's not really done and done? shouldn't the system know the credit card cleared before going to next page? If the card declined or is incorrect. it should tell you right after. you shouldn't have to check your account to confirm every single time.)

or

you try to reg a bunch of domains and you forgot to add one to your cart then proceed to pay and now you think it's all done.

but you missed one.

I guess it is harder with large portfolios, but as well as a spreadsheet with my active domains, and a separate sheet with names sold, I do also keep an additional sheet listing the names I have let expire.

Tools like DomainIQ with Whois historical records could help with names from way back.

It is all too easy for a domain to 'disappear' from an account. I've got screenshots of my names being unlocked at a registrar (without my doing).

If you have one or two domains it is easy to keep up with them but when you get into the hundreds or thousands, it is difficult.

I've started printing a hard copy of every registration or renewal...trust no one.

it's more the other way round

I see a name I like to register
and the domain is mine already......

You aren't a real domainer until you've bid on a domain you previously let expire! :-/ lol

Sadly email searching won't work in my case. Do GoDaddy and Namecheap have good order history search capabilities?

Namebio.com
This seems to be geared more toward keyword searches. I can't get it to help with specific domains.

Do these guys charge a fee and if so does anyone know how much?

This doesn't seem to contain historical info, just current stuff.

If you want to share the name with me via PM I will see what I can find.

edit: if it was under privacy, my searches will not find any usable info

Hi Bob,
to make your life easier you could use only one spreadsheet with one additional column where you define the domain status (active, sold, expired). You can then use the filter to sort them by status.

I once registered a domain I liked very much - later I found out that I have let it drop two years ago. :xf.grin:
