.uk .UK domain name release

Spaceship Spaceship
Watch
Is anyone registering .UK domains? They opened registration for anyone and there's a bunch of great one-word domains up for grabs. I haven't heard much about this extension on this forum and wanted to know all of your take.

UK residents already owning the .CO.UK extension received first dibs of its equivalent but now it's open registration. These .UK names seems to be much more better and catchy than .co.uk, but we'll see how things go. I suppose it's still too early to say.

There's still many great domains up for grab.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
As many in this thread are uk domain name investors and or it discusses
uk domain names etc

There is a need for a

Digital citizens advice service

In the uk

Eg a digital pawnbrokers

Even if there was a thread on namepros as such that allows uk domain name investors to borrow money against their domain names in times of financial need without having to sell their digital assets

Because it's a complete waste of time trying to tell traditional organisations like universal credit or citizens advice that you need a loan etc for a variety of reasons Eg to pay a mortgage payment or months rent or new secondhand car to get to work etc and prepared to use your digital assets Eg domain names as collateral etc

They haven't got a clue what you'd be talking about

They just refer you to traditional out of date defunct links which achieve absolutely nothing and it wastes everyone's time in the process

It would be much easy to have a thread that allows a person to pawn a domain name or two in exchange for Sameday cash from a panel of domain name investors who understand their values etc

The panel should be made up of people with accounts at Domainlore

The uk Auction website for domains

Consisting of

domain name brokers

Domain name flippers

A couple of registrars

A couple of brandable market places

And domain name investors

Where people seeking to raise money from. Their domain names Can simply post the domain in such a thread and people on here just post what they think the domain name is worth and how much they would lend against it

Such a service would stop domain name investors that are currently in debt because they cannot use their digital assets which no one understands to pay off traditional existing debt

It's the future

What I meant is that I haven't bought any of the new issue etc

Understood, sorry. I'd imagine new issue auctions will be more affordable in a few weeks. Though I already regret not bidding more for , real, and a few others. 'Smile' I lost at the post with some fixed ending auto bid, Judge Judy distracted me in the final minutes of 'Oxygen'. I was asleep for MOJO. Just can't get it together

Didn't manage to get a single name on my list, including the one for the company I work for. Was such a poorly managed roll-out, and the eligibility was a joke.

Our company has owned companyname.org.uk for about 25-30 years and are a very active IT company. Owner of the .co.uk has been inactive for at least 10 years but maintains the domain and ancient website. Even though we are a Nominet partner, they wouldn't listen to us at all, nor give us any sort of window to register it before the general public. Put in a preorder for it, but some reseller got their hands on it and tried selling it to us for $100K. Ridiculous.

We've got the registered trademark so could probably go down the C&D route, though I'm not really sure it's worth all the hassle for an obvious Nominet cash-grab.

That wouldn't be very fair would it!

Just about as fair as them offering preference to the .co.uk but ignoring all other UK extensions. There should have been an established hierarchy which doesn't just suit UK businesses, but also UK non-profits and individuals.

You're probably right. They did assign the right of registration to the .org.uk if the .co.uk didn't exist.

Mind you owning the domain for as long as the company has which goes back to an era when one word. Coms were free to register etc the company must have made a few quid in the domain name space or the years

But why didn't you buy the. Co.uk when it became available back in the day which together with your. Org would have given you automatic right to the. uk

It was a smooth transaction at Wizedrop. I'm happy with their fast service, as I already have the domain. They have a slightly different way of bidding in my opinion. If you bid your maximum, I think that is what the price becomes, and I may have outbid myself lol. I'm a happy customer though. Vapes is being sold their tomorrow.

Hey creature,
I'm glad you are happy with the transaction ! We will take into consideration your feedback
Thank you

They did indeed, but there should have been a period of time where the other x

The .co.uk was never available for us to register as someone else has owned it for as long as we had the .org.uk.

Seemed to be a bit of a bloodbath with the .uk over the last few months.

Don't know why anyone should think its been a "Blood bath" Been pretty much as everyone in the UK had predicted.

Probably a couple of million defensive registrations by .co.uk owners (businesses and domainers)
100,000 or so pick-ups by those that see an opportunity in the UK as a stand alone - that hasn't really materialised accept for some top notch words and geo place name domains. (domainer purchases)

Seems to me the wise money has stayed with the established .co.uk extension. Nobody seems to want the .uk as a standalone. Obviously most secondary market buyers would prefer the pair but will settle for the .co.uk, whereas they wouldn't settle for the .UK (alone) for a business or product domain.

The 123-reg drops (January) did attract some interest but, mostly the decent stuff went to drop-catchers and then subsequent auctions, So, the market set the price. Only real winners were those with a decent catch-script and had paid for the access to the Nominets drop system which wasn't cheap (and heavily restricted in regards to attempts)

Seems to me that from a domainers perspective (large portfolio holders) have used the uk launch to thin out their .co.uk holdings (dropping the least desirable) then use the savings to consolidate their top names (create pairs) and ignore the UK version of their least favorable.

A quick visit to the number of half-decent domains available in just the .UK shows it hasn't been a blood bath at all. - Nobody really wants them as a stand alone

It was expected but it is still interesting to see it happen. Most of these domain names were not active.

I ran web usage survey on the .uk domain names in July 2019 and the total number of .uk domain names was 3.6 million with 2.1 million being in the zone file. The usage breakdown was
Content: 42,514 (2.02%)
No Content: 893,789 (52.45%)
Templated: 221,488 (10.52%) (sales/PPC/affiliate landers)
Redirects: 288,038 (13.68%)
No Sites: 659,329 (31.32%)

Of the redirects, 32,360 (1.54%) were to the HTTPS version of the site. The PPC count was 174,421 (8.28%) and Sales were 46,948 (2.23%).

Agree on the demand element. There was also a major screwup in communicating the changed registration terms and this may have suppressed registrations from people and businesses using outsourced registrars who thought that people outside the UK could not register .uk domain names.

I keep seeing lots of decent sales for .UK names on domainlore.

I still find it fascinating that any UK business choose not to continue to register their .UK equivalent despite what has been said prior..
To see a competitor use their shortened .uk version of your brand would not be ‘helpful’ in their UK business moving forward..

Australia will face the same dilemma shortly..

Me too. It's fascinating that given the choice they still languish on .co.uk

Could anyone here on the forum tell me whether any businesses are publicly advertising the shortened version .uk (without the co) on billboards etc
