GoDaddy allows you to modify expiration date

It does not change the registration date, just the expiration month/year. Is there a particular reason why you wanted to do that? You are overpaying by 30% if you do this. Instead of $0.70 cents per month, you are paying $1.

I've never tried it but in my case end of august is a great time to renew domains.

Right, but for $2.49 you could have added another year instead of just 6 months. The transfer would only extend the registration by another year regardless of where it currently ends.

It doesn't depend on registrar.
Every registrar can do it via EPP command to Registry... but only some of them offer this feature to their customers...

Not very useful for domainers, but a "regular" domain holder who has just a few domains might find it handy to modify the expiration dates to the same day, at least that was the rationale behind implementing it at the registry iirc.

[edit] A use case for a domainer could be when you have a lot of domains expiring soon and you don't have money, or don't want to spend on renewing them now, you can postpone it by a month by paying $1 apiece.

I would certainly use this if my preferred registrars supported it. It would greatly simplify annual reviews, personal finances management, also it may be useful for tax purposes.

In some long ago thread I recall that someone who had all of their domains at GD said they always consolidated all of their names so that the renewals are all in one month. I guess if you long hold names it could be convenient. I would not use it.

So it doesn't change the original registration date.
But if does change the expiration date, even if you change registrar.

I believe it's just a prorated extension of 1-11 months to push the expiration date to the month requested at the registry. But I've never actually done it so I may be wrong.
