After renewals, paid tools and any other domaining related expenses, did you make money in 2019?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Yes, but I hope that next year will be better :)

I found that phone calls of prospects
are the main advantage of using your
own landing page.

I love talking to leads.

I think this can be one of the points. Talking to the buyer can clarify a lot of things in just one call, and mainly prevent to lose that buyer due to a lack of dialogue.

I've been acquiring, acquiring, acquiring... so I am in the red. If you count my time, let's say, $150 per billable hour, and I'm deep in the red. I do have some good domains though that will sell, eventually :B

You make more money on the buy IMO.

I have made steady sales for more than a decade, but recently I have had much larger profits on paper as there are fewer reinvestment opportunities.

Yes. I certainly did make money. Got into full-time domaining around August 2018.

Total approx dollar volume of sold domains in 2019 = $35,000+

Very much in the green after deducting the commissions and covering my renewals upto end of March 2020, and any other business expenses.

Eagerly looking forward to scale it up in 2020.

Total revenue for me this year is just over $82,450. About half of that was invested back in my portfolio and on renewals. It's been my most profitable year as a domain name investor since I started 7 years ago. Wishing everyone a profitable 2020.

$4,000+ net profit this year from a portfolio of 121 domains.
75% - Afternic BIN
25% - Outbound

1st half of the year was very good for me, second half almost dead (only one sale in October).

2019 was my 4th full year and I made some profit.
My stats 2019 vs. 2018:
Sales revenue: up +52% - $X,XXX
Net profit: up +24,5% - $X,XXX
I'm maintaining a small portfolio: +- 250 domains
Many thanks to all namepros members and moderators.
I wish you all a prosperous and peaceful 2020!

Yup .. made multiple $x,xxx sales this year (a few in the upper 4-figure range) and definitely in the green overall by a nice amount.

I obviously also made some $$ with my daily lists at NameCult, but nowhere near as much as I hoped given the time invested, and looking back I'd have to say my time would be much better spent focusing on my own portfolio.

Because while I did make a good profit in 2019, for most of the year less than 1/3 of my domains were listed on Afternic only (only half of those priced) .. and then about 10% of my domains were listed on Sedo. So I was likely operating at about 25% efficiency .. which means I'm very happy looking ahead about the profitability of my portfolio if I actually get it organised and price/list all my domains at all the marketplaces. I recently started using Epik landers for about 40% of my domains, and definitely seeing increased activity .. really looking forward to 2020! :)

Anyhow .. hope everyone else had a good 2019 .. and wishing you all the best of luck for 2020! :)

Hi Ray

earned some parking revenue and had a couple of sales
so, minus those expenses mentioned,
yeah, I could say that money was made.

imo...

.

Where is the best place for parking revenue please?

Unfortunately very little money is being made with parking in the industry these days. Only a small fraction of domains make more than a couple of dollars a year.

The money I was referring to was from selling my domains.

The money I make at NameCult and my lists here at NamePros is affiliate commissions .. not quite the same thing as parking.

I suggest you take a look here to get more specific answers:

In August I discovered namepros & went on a spree registering about 100 .coms till date. It’s been a learning curve. I’ve made my money back with a $1,999 sale in December which I didn’t expect..

Actually I was going to price it at $250, but decided to make it $1,999 and it sold after 1 month..

Not from parking but from domain sales, gross much higher, though its average per month, so some months i made more than 5k some less than 5k but overall average should be around 5k. not counting my recent 30K sale. august was my best month. 13k+ net november worst 2.5k net. net income not only depends on sales but also my expenses of renewals, transfers, purchases or new acquisations, in the last quarter i have maximum renewals.

There is no one secret but here i will mention some of the points i follow -

try every possible niche like geo, brandables, liquid or others so that you don't be dependent on any single niche.
though most of the names i have are .com but i don't shy away from trying net org or .co or .in and more

keep yourself updated with namebio or namepros reported domain sales thread and other possible sources to know whats selling.
Keep up with latest tech and startups, who and whch niche is getting most funding, whats trending etc.
make good use of dropcatch discount backorder.
when there is any promo offer for handreg try to bulk register during that period.
GD closeouts one of better source to get quality for nominal price. though lots of competition now and its getting difficult but still if you focus you can get good names.
if you check aftermarket also its tough to get any name for fair price but if you keep trying then there also you get chance few times to get a good deal.
try to check around your network or social media that whether you are getting any good deals to buy domains.
rarely but you will even find names at dan, sedo etc that can be worth buying.

for selling - afternic premium listing has been the biggest source for me. So i make sure to avoid registers that are not eligible for that. parking at dan and now epik work fine for me. and Previously i have used efty which was good as well.

Thank you for useful information and for sharing with newbies as me. Which platform would you recommend for landers? Now I am using Dan and see views but only 1 or 2 offers. Used efty for a short time and had low offer. Never used Epik. Is it necessary to change landers or is better to focus on better names? I have a pretty good names also! List names on Afternic for fast transfer but within a year not received any offer or sale. But I often see your sales on Afternic when you post them and I can't understand what I am doing wrong! I started my second year in domain business and I really like it anyway!!!

In 2019 i'm finally well out of red. However it's hard to count how much exactly i have earned, because i post all my tools and other expenses (except acquisitions of course) and my working time to my SEO domain trading. Few grands i think.

I haven't been active for several years, only keeping a small portfolio. In early 2019 I sold a domain for $xxx.

However, a December 2019 $xx,xxx sale has inspired me to have a more active 2020.

I use dan for the names outside epik and use epik landing page for names at epik, slowly i'm shifting my whole portfolio at epik. Both dan and epik have nice landing pages with same commission so there is not much difference, only drawbacks that i see with dan are -
not able to message without countering or rejecting an offer
no option to accept offer if once refused
they take regular holidays like new year or even on random weekends they go unavailable.
not share contact details unless it is cancelled by buyer after agreement.
I'm not sure about how efficiently they follow up to the potential buyer. two of the cancelled buyers told me they were not reached out properly.

and although i like epik landing page there is some scope of improvement there too.

Is it necessary to change landers or is better to focus on better names?
anyday BETTER NAMES. of course goes without saying. there should be no doubt regarding this.

Used efty for a short time and had low offer.
For me efty spam fake offers was major problem but i have heard they have improved a lot from that point.

List names on Afternic for fast transfer but within a year not received any offer or sale. But I often see your sales on Afternic when you post them and I can't understand what I am doing wrong
it depends on what kind of domains you have, your quantity of domains and lastly your pricing of domains. specially last point of right pricing matters a lot.

I started my second year in domain business and I really like it anyway!!!
all the best
